Dandaka, Mount 檀特山 (Skt; Jpn Dandoku-sen): Also known as Mount Dandaloka.
A mountain said to be located in Gandhara, India. Dandaka was believed to be the mountain where Shakyamuni carried out austerities after he renounced the secular world.
It is also known as the place where Sudāna, Shakyamuni as a prince in a former life, went into retreat and carried out austerities.
The Chinese priest Hsüan-tsang mentions visiting Mount Dandaka in The Record of the Western Regions, the record of his travels through Central Asia and India in the seventh century.
According to his notes about his travels through Gandhara at that time, a stupa built by King Ashoka still stood on the mountain where, he said, the prince Sudāna had lived in seclusion.
