Nine Realms

The nine realms of error, or subjection to passions, i.e. all the realms of the living except the tenth and highest, the Buddha-realm. The nine realms are

  1. the hell,
  2. the hungry ghost,
  3. the animal,
  4. the man,
  5. the Asura,
  6. the gods,
  7. the Arhat (sound hearer),
  8. the Arhat (enlightened to condition), and
  9. the Bodhisattva.
