power of another
他力 (Jpn tariki )

The power of a Buddha or a bodhisattva one relies upon for salvation. Also, the protection afforded by a Buddha or bodhisattva. In the Pure Land ( Jodo) school, the power of another specifically means the power of the Buddha Amida to bring his believers to rebirth in his pure land. The Pure Land school encourages its followers to place all their trust solely in the power of another, or the power of salvation of the Buddha Amida. Shinran (1173-1262), founder of the True Pure Land ( Jodo Shin) school in Japan, asserted that one's power of faith is also provided by the absolute power of Amida Buddha. Power of another is contrasted with the power of self, which means to seek to achieve enlightenment through one's own efforts in Buddhist practice. See also power of self.
