Seng-yu

僧祐; (445–518) (PY Sengyou; Jpn Soyu)

The priest who compiled the Chinese work A Collection of Records concerning the Tripitaka, which he did on the basis of Tao-an's Comprehensive Catalog of Sutras, the first index of Chinese translations of the Buddhist scriptures.

Because The Comprehensive Catalog of Sutras was lost, his Collection of Records concerning the Tripitaka is the oldest extant Chinese catalog of the Buddhist canon.

This work is a valuable reference not only for the study of Buddhist literature but also for historical studies, as it includes prefaces to the various translations and biographies of the early translators.
