Chih-li
知礼 (960–1028) (PY Zhili; Jpn Chirei)

A priest of China, noted as a restorer of the T'ient'ai school. Also known as Ssu-ming Chih-li after his birthplace, Ssu-ming. At age twenty, he studied the T'ient'ai doctrines under I-t'ung. By that time, the T'ient'ai school had already split into two lineages: that of Ichi and that of Chih-yin. Chih-li, with Tsun-shih, succeeded to the lineage of Ichi and called their group the Mountain (Chin Shan-chia; Jpn Sange) school to show that it was within the orthodox stream of the school of Mount T'ient'ai where the founder T'ient'ai had lived. Chih-li wrote several commentaries including The Essentials of "The Ten Onenesses" and The Annotations on "The Profound Meaning of the Perceiver of the World's Sounds Chapter."
