360 . Yang Xi (330–386?) begins to receive the Shang Qing revelations from the spirit of Lady Wei Huacun (251–334), a Daoist adept who had been a practitioner of Celestial Master Daoism.

The revelations eventually total 31 volumes of materials and become the foundation for a new school, Shang Qing Daoism, which developed on Maoshan (Mt. Mao) under the leadership of Tao Hongjing (456–536).

The school put great emphasis on visualizations and decreased emphasis on alchemical practices. Shang Qing Daoism was later absorbed into the Orthodox Unity (Zhenyi) school.
