Introduction
Varṇa (वणrः ) is a Sanskrit word which means type, order, colour or class. The term refers to
social classes in Brahminical books like the Manusmriti. These and other Hindu literature
classified the society in principle into four varnas:
1. Brahmins: priests, scholars and teachers.
2. Kshatriyas: rulers, warriors and administrators.
3. Vaishyas: agriculturalists and merchants.
4. Shudras: laborers and service providers.
The Creation Hymn in the Rigveda, which is at least 3000 years old, describes how the four
varnas sprang from the different parts of Purusha or the Cosmic Being, who is a manifestation
of Brahman. Some historians believe that the Vedic varnas were initially not that rigid but
might have become stratified into rigid social divisions in the later period.

The Varna Koota in Kundli matching
Marriage is a sacred bonding of two natives that is meant to last for a lifetime. With that in
mind, people in India take help of Vedic astrology to check the compatibility of a couple
before marriage through Kundli matching. This throws insight about the compatibility of the
boy and girl, and how the Ascendants and Nakshatras in their horoscopes could influence their
marriage. Based on this compatibility, they go ahead with the marriage.
During Kundli matching expert astrologers analyze and match eight different aspects of the
couple’s horoscopes. The first and foremost among this is Varna Koota. Varna Koota refers to
the calculation of the native’s varna- meaning type, order or cast- to analyse the compatibility
of the couple.
Brahmin Varna is the name of a social class as defined by such texts as the "Rig Veda" and
other Hindu texts. From Sanskrit, Varna means “type,” “class,” “order” or “color.” Brahmin
Varna includes priests, scholars and teachers, and is mostly considered the highest class. They
are expected to cultivate qualities of integrity, honesty, purity and wisdom.
Kshatriya Varna is the name of a social class as defined by such texts as the "Rig Veda" and
other Hindu texts. From Sanskrit, Varna means “type,” “class,” “order” or “color.” The Sudra
varna is a Sanskrit term that refers to the fourth and lowest of the four social groups in the
Indian caste, or varna, system. The origins of the word are unclear, but Sudra appears to derive

from such, meaning “vexation,” and dru, meaning “to run.”
Traditionally, the Sudra varna was composed of people who
worked in menial jobs and in service, including slaves.
