unreformed sect, old in the sense of an antique, very old [JV]


Nyingma School. The teachings brought to Tibet and translated mainly during the reign of King Trisong Deutsen and in the subsequent period up to Rinchen Sangpo in the ninth century chiefly by the great masters Padmasambhava, Vimalamitra, Shantarakshita, and Vairochana.

The two subsequent main types of transmission are Kama and Terma. Practices are based on both the Three Outer Tantras and Three Inner Tantras with emphasis on the practice of the Inner Tantras of Mahayoga, Anu Yoga and Ati Yoga [RY]
