Ayako Nakamura studied Pedagogy at Tamagawa University in Tokyo (1994–1996), and Indology and Tibetology at the University of Göttingen (1997–2000) and the University of Hamburg (2000–2005), where she has received her MA in Classical Indology, with focus on Buddhism. She received her PhD in the field of Classical Indology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Harunaga Isaacson, with a doctoral dissertation on the concept of “awakening” (bodhi: byang chub) as found in the Bodhisattvabhūmi, Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, and Buddhabhūmisūtra, along with their commentaries, which she is currently preparing for publication. Since 2009 she has been working as a research assistant for the “Nepalese-German Manuscript Cataloguing Project (NGMCP)” at the University of Hamburg.
