Dug-pa : Originally a sub-sect of the Kagyu-pa School (twelfth century), it remained unreformed by the work of Tsongkhapa, and has largely sunk to the level of the indigenous Bōn (q.v.). Now found mostly in Bhutan and Ladak. It claims three levels, the high, middle and low. The best is at Kagyu-pa level, the worst little better than sorcery. Sometimes known as the Black Hats. See Hoffmann, The Religions of Tibet (1960).
