meditation master
禅師 (Jpn zenji )

A priest who has attained the level of meditation that enables one to focus the mind on one point, remaining in that state of concentration in order to eradicate illusions and contemplate the truth.

"Meditation Master" was often applied as an honorific title, as were the titles "Dharma Teacher" and "Discipline Master."

The imperial courts of China and Japan awarded the title "Meditation Master" to priests they considered to be of outstanding virtue.

This title in Chinese and Japanese is also used to refer to eminent priests of the Ch'an, or Zen, school, to whom the term "Zen Master" is often applied in English.
