LOJONG/TRAINING OF THE MIND – TEACHINGS, part 2

The Brightly Shining Sun” A Step-by-Step Guide to Meditation on the Bodhicaryavatara, by Patrul Rinpoche, part 2

Lojong, or mind training, is a core practice in all the lineages of the Tibetan tradition. They can perhaps best be characterized as a method for transforming our mind by turning away from self-centeredness and cultivating instead the mental habits that generate bodhicitta, the awakened mind that puts the benefit of others above all else. The practice of lojong is therefore presented as a method to shift our attitude away from our problems, anxieties, hopes, and fears toward an expansive sense of joy and well-being that springs from the very essence of Mahayanabodhichitta.

LHABAB DÜCHEN – the festival of the descent from heaven – is one of the four major Buddhist holidays.

Buddha’s mother Mayadevi was reborn in Indra’s heaven. To repay her kindness and to liberate her, and also to benefit the gods, Buddha spent three months teaching in the realm of the gods. He descended to earth in Sankisa, which is located in modern Uttar Pradesh, and which is counted among the eight holy places.

Khenpo Tashi Sangpo will give an introduction on this special day.

Afterwards we recite the 16 Arhat Ritual.

We will also pray for the long life of Her Eminence Jetsun Kushok, who celebrates her birthday on 14th November (according western calendar), and send her our heartfelt wishes.

SIMHAMUKHA (SENGE DONGMA/TIB.),

THE LION FACE DAKINI

Simhamukha is a fully enlightened dakini of primordial wisdom, extremely efficient against any kind of obstacles, from the common ones that cause us hardships, such as negative influences, dangers, illnesses and disorders, to the spiritual ones that obstruct our progress towards the state of Buddhahood. In order to destroy all obstacles she manifests in a wrathful form with the face of a lion. The lineage of this most powerful secret practice was brought to Tibet from India by the great translator Bari Lotsawa, who transmitted it to Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, and it became one of the Thirteen Golden Dharmas of the Sakya Tradition.

On the occasion of today’s birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, we recite the following prayers (included in the Sakya Monlam prayerbook):

The Noble Sutra for Remembering the Three Jewels & Confession, page 3-17

16-Arhat ritual, page 45-62

We wish His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama a very happy birthday and a long life.

THE PRAYER OF SAMANTABHADRA

The Samantabhadra prayer is one of the most important Buddhist prayers, also called ‘The King of Prayers’. Reciting this prayer allows one to accumulate infinite merit, not only for oneself, but especially for others, and is therefore traditionally recited for the dead or for those in particularly difficult situations. It is also the main prayer recited during the 10 days of Universal Prayers for Peace (Monlam) in which monks and nuns from all Tibetan schools participate every year.

This year, from 30th July to 1st August, the second Sakya Monlam in Europe will take place in Paris, which will be guided by Their Holinesses the Sakya Trizin (41st, 42nd and 43rd) and H.E. Asanga Rinpoche, and many great Sakya masters will arrive for the occasion.

With the first turning of the Dharma wheel, the main subject of the Buddha’s teaching concern the Four Noble Truths. This teaching is the foundation of the entire system of Buddhist thought and practice of all traditions and lineages. During this seminar, this topic will be supported by a reading of the “Setting in motion of the Dharma Wheel Sutra”, and will explore important related aspects of the Abhidharma teachings.
