Gayatri Mantra: Meaning and significance

Gayatri Mantra is one of the oldest and most powerful Vedic mantras as per Hindu religious beliefs. This sacred mantra is mentioned in the Upanishads as a ritual and in the Bhagwat Gita as a divine poem.

Gayatri Mantra was first recorded in the Rig Veda and was written in Sanskrit around 2500 to 3500 years back. The Gayatri Mantra comprises twenty-four syllables organized inside a triplet of eight syllables. Reciting the Gayatri Mantra not only decontaminates the chanter but the listener as well.

ॐ भूर् भुवः स्वः
तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्
Om bhūr bhuvaḥ suvaḥ
tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ
bhargo devasyadhīmahi
dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt
Gayatri Mantra English Translation:
We meditate on the glory of the Creator;
Who has created the Universe;
Who is worthy of Worship;
Who is the embodiment of Knowledge and Light;
Who is the remover of all Sin and Ignorance;
May He enlighten our Intellect.

    Satva is the best time to chant the Gayatri Mantra. Hence, the Gayatri Mantra should be recited between 4 am and 8 am and 4 pm and 8 am.
