HH the 14th Dalai Lama on the Jonang Kālacakra Six Yogas and Shentong – English translation

HH the 14th Dalai Lama has been a strong advocate and supporter of the Jonang teachings on Kālacakra and Shentong flourishing in exile. He was good friends with the late, 9th Jetsun Kalkha Dhampa.

An example of HH’s support can be read in his beautiful Aspiration for Jonang Teachings composed in 2001, full Tibetan and English text is below.

Recently, the Jonang Well-Being Association in Exile prepared a compilation of video teachings of HH Dalai Lama talking about the Jonang, the Shentong view and the Kālacakra Six Yogas. This was only in Tibetan. Out of my own interest, and for the benefit of others interested in what HH has to say on this topic, I decided to translate it into English, see here.

Here is a letter I received from the Office of HH Dalai Lama thanking me for this translation.

In the teachings, HH mentions many times a Jonang stanza by Tāranātha that he finds especially inspiring. it is not an easy passage to understand nor to translate, but here is my humble effort, based on HH’s explanations of it. Apologies for any errors on my side!

The naked state of illusory, self-manifesting appearances,

is luminous awareness without reference point;

left remaining the inexpressible sphere;

vividly flickering great bliss.

A beautiful stanza indeed. Here is the Tibetan of it:

སྒྱུ་མའི་རང་སྣང་རྗེན་ནེ་ནེ། །

གཏད་མེད་རིག་པ་གསལ་ལ་ལ། །

བརྗོད་མེད་དབྱིངས་སུ་ཐལ་ལ་ལ། །

བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཁྲིལ་ལི་ལི།

Aspiration for the Prospering of the Jonang Teachings ཇོ་ནང་པའི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་པའི་སྨོན་ལམ།

བགྲངས་ཡས་བསྐལ་པར་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་ལེགས་གོམས་པས།།

drang ye kel par thug kye leg gom pe

མཐའ་ཡས་འགྲོ་བའི་རེ་སྐོང་དམ་ཆོས་ཆར།།

’tha ye dro wai re kong chö char

འབེབས་མཁས་མཉམ་མེད་ཤཱཀྱའི་དབང་པོ་ཡིས།།

beb khe nyam me shakyai wang po yi

འགྲོ་འདི་དགེ་ལེགས་དཔལ་གྱིས་བསྐྱང་དུ་གསོལ།།

dro di ge leg pel gi kyang du söl

Having thoroughly meditated upon the mind of enlightenment for immeasurable eons,

I supplicate the incomparable Regent of the Shākyas,

skilled at raining down the sublime Dharma that fulfils the

aspirations of limitless beings,

to protect them with the glory of excellent virtue.

རིམ་གསུམ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོའི་དགོངས་པའི་དོན། །

rim sum chö khor lo’i gong pai don

མཁས་དང་གྲུབ་བརྙེས་དུ་མས་བཀྲལ་བ་ལས།་།

ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྒོ་མང་རབ་དབྱེའི་ཡ་གྱལ་གཅིག།

chö ki go mang ye’i ya gyel chig

ཇོ་ནང་པ་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་གྱུར་ཅིག།

jo nang pa yi ten pa gye gyur chig

The intended meaning of the three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma

Was elucidated by multiple realizations derived from study and practice.

This is what differentiates the one from the many entrances to the Buddha Dharma.

གངས་ལྗོངས་རྒྱལ་བསྟན་པད་མའི་ཚལ་ཡངས་པོར།།

gang jong gyel ten pe mai tshel yang por

བཤད་སྒྲུབ་ཆོས་ཚུལ་འདབ་བརྒྱ་གྲོལ་བའི་ཁྲོད།།

she drub chö tshul dab drol wai thrö

འཁོར་ལོ་ཐ་མའི་དགོངས་པ་རྩལ་བཏོན་པའི།།

khor lo tha mai gong pa tsel ton pai

ཇོ་ནང་པ་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་གྱུར་ཅིག།

jo nang pa yi ten pa gye gyur chig

Amidst the vast lotus grove of the Victorious One’s teachings in the Land of Snows,

Hundreds of petals of Buddhist scriptures and meditation practices bloomed.

Among them the Jonang who emphasised the intent of the Final Turning.

May the Jonang teachings thrive and prosper!

མདོ་རྒྱུད་གཞན་དང་བཤད་སྲོལ་མི་འདྲ་བའི།།

do gyu zhen dang she sol mi dra wai

ཤིང་རྟའི་སྲོལ་ཆེན་དུས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོའི་རྒྱུད།།

shing tai sol chen du ki khor lo’i gyu

མི་ཉམས་འཛིན་ཅིང་སྤེལ་བའི་བཀའ་བབས་པ།།

mi nyam dzin ching trel wai ka’ bab pa

ཇོ་ནང་པ་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་གྱུར་ཅིག།

jo nang pa yi ten pa gye gyur chig

Distinct from the expositions of other Sūtras and Tantras,

The great chariot commentary tradition of the Kālachakra Tantra,

You uphold the unequalled oral transmission lineage, preserved without deterioration

May the Jonang teachings thrive and prosper!

ཡུ་མོ་མི་བསྐྱོད་རྡོ་རྗེ་ནས་བཟུངས་ཏེ།།

yu mo mi kyö dor je ne zung te

དོལ་བུ་བ་དང་ཀུན་དགའ་གྲོལ་བའི་མཆོག།

dol bu ba dang kun ga dröl wai chog

རྗེ་བཙུན་སྒྲོལ་མགོན་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ལེགས་སྤེལ་བའི།།

je tsun dröl gon sog ki leg pel wai

ཇོ་ནང་པ་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་གྱུར་ཅིག།

jo nang pa yi ten pa gye gyur chig

From Yumo Mikyo Dorje, through to Dolpopa, Kunga Drolchok,

the protector Jetsun Tāranātha, and successive masters,

your lineage magnificently spread.

སྙིང་པོའི་མདོ་དང་ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་གཞུང་གི་དོན།།

nying po’i do dang lu drub zhung gi don

གཞི་འབྲས་དབྱེར་མེད་རྟག་བརྟན་བདེ་གཤེགས་སྙིང།།

zhi dre yer me tag ten de sheg nying

ཡེ་ནས་བཞུགས་པའི་དོན་དམ་འགྲེལ་བའི་ཚུལ།།

ye ne zhug pai don dam drel wai tshul

ཇོ་ནང་པ་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་གྱུར་ཅིག།

jo nang pa yi ten pa gye gyur chig

Elaborating the meaning of the Essential Sūtras and of Nāgārjuna’s texts

The primordially existent ultimate,

permanent and stable Sugatagarbha, the indivisible basis and result,

May the Jonang teachings thrive and prosper!

མདོ་ཡི་ལྟ་བ་གཞན་སྙིང་དབུ་མ་དང།།

do yi ta wa zhen nying u ma dang

རྒྱུད་དོན་རྣལ་འབྱོར་དྲུག་གི་ཉམས་ལེག་གྱིས།།

gyu don nel jor drug gi nyam leg gyi

ཆོས་སྐུ་མངོན་དུ་མཛད་པའི་བཞེད་སྲོལ་ཆེ།།

chö ku ngon du dze pai zhe söl che

ཇོ་ནང་པ་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་གྱུར་ཅིག།

jo nang pa yi ten pa gye gyur chig

Through your Empty-of-Other Madhyamaka view of the Sūtras

And excellent experience of the Six Yogas, the meaning of the Tantras,

Your great expositions on actualising the dharmakāya,

May the Jonang teachings thrive and prosper!

སྐྱབས་གནས་རྒྱལ་དང་རྒྱལ་སྲས་བྱིན་ཆེན་དང་།་།

ཆོས་ཉིད་དོན་དམ་འགྱུར་བ་མེད་པའི་སྟོབས།་།

དཀར་ཕྱོགས་ལྷ་དང་བདག་ཅག་མོས་གུས་མཐུས།་།

སྨོན་ལམ་འདི་བཏབ་ཇི་བཞིན་འགྲུབ་པར་ཤོག།

Through the vast blessings of the Victorious One and his heirs, the sources of refuge,

Through the power of the unchanging ultimate reality,

And through the force of divine virtue and devotion,

May this aspiration be fulfilled accordingly!

This “Aspiration Prayer” was requested by Khenpo Ngawang Dorje and other Jonang practitioners. It was composed by Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama on November 23, 2001 at Thekchen Choling in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India.”
