Inner respiration (Wyl. nang dbugs) is the subtle process that continues after ordinary breathing has ceased and, according to modern definitions, a person would be declared dead. Sogyal Rinpoche says that the time between the end

of the breathing and the cessation of the inner respiration is traditionally defined as 'the length of time it takes to eat a meal', meaning approximately twenty minutes.
