Water Holder; 持水 (Skt Jatimdhara; Jpn Jisui); A physician mentioned in the Golden Light Sutra. According to that sutra, he lived countless kalpas ago in the Middle Day of the Law of a Buddha named Treasure Excellence, during the reign of King Heavenly Unhindered Light who was a believer in the Buddha's teaching. Water Holder was well versed in medicine and healed various kinds of illnesses. When an epidemic swept the country, Water Holder was by then too old to provide treatment. Nevertheless, he taught his secret medical arts to his son, Water Carrier, who then used them to save the people in Water Holder's stead. See also Water Carrier.
