Treatise on the Pure Land, The
浄土論 (Chin Ching-t’u-lun; Jpn Jodo-ron )
(1) Also known as The Treatise on Rebirth in the Pure Land. A short treatise by Vasubandhu on the Buddha Infinite Life Sutra. Translated into Chinese in 529 by Bodhiruchi, the work consists of a verse section and a prose section explaining it. It praises the Pure Land of the Buddha Infinite Life, or Amida Buddha, and encourages aspiration for rebirth in that
Pure Land. It is valued by the Pure Land ( Jodo) school in addition to the three Pure Land sutras (the Buddha Infinite Life Sutra, the Meditation on the Buddha Infinite Life Sutra, and the Amida Sutra). T'an-luan, the founder of the Chinese Pure Land school, interpreted the work in The Commentary on "The Treatise on the Pure Land."
(2) A seventh-century work by Chia-ts'ai, a priest of the Chinese Pure Land school. It clarifies the teachings set forth in The Collected Essays on the World of Peace and Delight by Tao-ch'o, the second patriarch of the Chinese Pure Land school. The World of Peace and Delight is another name for Amida Buddha's Pure Land of Perfect Bliss. In this treatise, Chia-ts'ai describes that pure land and the cause for rebirth there, which it exhorts people to seek.
