Kalsang Gyatso was bom in Dhomey, Tibet in 1981. His father is Sangye and his mother Dolmtso. In 1993, when he was 13 years old, he became a monk at Shetsant Gheshr Monastery in Tibet where he studied reading, writing Tibetan grammar and language. He studied Buddhist philosophy until 2001. At the age of 20, he crossed the Himalyan Mountains and came to India as a refugee. In 2001 he entered Tashi Kyil Monastery where he continued his study of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. He served as the monastery’s disciplinarian for two years.
