kun gzhi'i rnam par shes pa - "Consciousness of Scarlet".

Translation of the Sanskrit “alayavijcana”. In the mind-only system and the schools that follow its view of minds (including the tantras), there are eight minds—rnam par shes brgyad "eight minds." The consciousness mentioned above is the eighth consciousness. In itself, it is not clouded and not determined. It is the basic consciousness which is the kun gzhi all-ground underlying the resting mind and all experience. It is also kun gzhi "universal chain, row" in which all karmic seeds and other things that ripen in the experience of beings are sown.

Because it acts as a place in which karmic seeds are sown and stored, it has been translated as "mind's storehouse," although it actually means "the base that extends beneath everything."
