Kwan-yin (Ch.) Kannon (Jap.) ; The feminine aspect of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (q.v.).

In iconography there are early versions which are male, but these are more correctly images of Kwan-shai-yin.

Later versions show a woman with child in arms, and as the ‘Goddess of Mercy’ the Mother and Child are revered throughout China and Japan.

See Broughton’s charming Vision of Kwannon Sama (1929).
