Lokakshema
[支婁迦讖] (n.d.) (Skt; Jpn Shirukasen)
A monk of Yyeh-chih, a kingdom in Central Asia, who is regarded as the earliest of the translator-monks from that country to journey to China. Lokakshema went to Lo-yang in China around C.E. 150 and translated many Mahayana sutras into Chinese. He was famed for his strict observance of precepts and diligent practice. His translations include the Shuramgama Sutra, the Sutra of the Meditation to Behold the Buddhas, and the Practice of Wisdom Sutra, the earliest of the Chinese translations of the Wisdom sutras.
