Mahatapana: It is explained that the hell in which the beings are heated with more suffering than in the Cullatapana is called Mahatapana.

The niraya-pala (hell-guardians) of this purgatory force the hell-beings to climb up a burning iron mountain and then they are slipped down by strong winds, falling to the red-hot stakes below.

There they experience feelings that are painful, sharp, severe, as long as the power of their evil kamma lasts.
