Dungtso Repa “The Later” (dung mtsho ras pa phyi ba) was born in Dingmodrin (ding ma brin) in Lato (la stod).

His father was Zhang Konne Chawa (zhang dkon ne bya ba) and his mother was Dronza Dronkyi (mgron za sgron skyid).

At a young age he was identified as the reincarnation of the fourteenth-century Kagyu treasure revealer Dungtso Repa.

Dungtso Repa began studying at the age of eleven, and at the age of twenty-three he became a disciple of the master Minyak Repa (mi nyag ras pa), training in both Nyingma and Sarma sutric and tantric cycles. During a lengthy retreat he had a vision of Padmasambhava, who commanded him to go on pilgrimage to Kongpo and U.

While in the On ('on) region Dungtso Repa met the female master Kunga Bum (kun dga' 'bum, d.u.). She accepted him as her student and consort.

Dungtso Repa revealed treasures in Monyul, at Kyungdzong Gangra (khyung rdzong gangs ra) and in Lato, at Sinpodzong (srin po rdzong). At Sinpodzong he revealed the Ladrub Dungwa Zhije (bla sgrub gdung ba zhi byed) and the Tshedrub Okyi Bumpa (tshe sgrub ’od kyi bum pa), which he transmitted to numerous disciples.

In Dakpo, on the shores of Lake Maṇḍal Nakpo (mtsho maNDal nag po) above Dakpo Gampo Monastery (dwags po sgam po), Dungtso Repa revealed the Dzogchen cycle of Yangti Nagpo Serkyi Druchik (yang ti nag po gser gyi ’bru gcig).
