Sanghamittarama Buddhist Nuns (Bhikkhuni) Residence

Sanghamittarama was opened in 2007 as a supportive place for Buddhist women, whether lay or sangha, to live and practise the Dhamma on the path to Awakening. It is the first residence for ordained Buddhist women in the Theravada tradition in Victoria.

Our small centre was founded by the Buddhist Society of Victoria and Ayya Sucinta, a senior Bhikkhuni from Germany, and a group of devout dedicated women Dhamma supporters. We are also grateful to Ayya Atapi from Sri Lanka and Ayya Dhammananda from Vietnam, both having contributed extensively to the development of the Centre and serving the needs of the community through the Dhamma. Presently, both Ayya Sucinta and Ayya Atapi have returned to Germany and Sri Lanka respectively; Ayya Dhammananda has the intention to return to Vietnam by request of the Vietnamese community of her homeland.
