瞻波 (Skt, Pali; Jpn Sempa)
The capital of Anga, one of the sixteen great states in India of Shakyamuni's time, bordered on the west by the Magadha kingdom. Champawas one of the six great cities in India, the others being Shravasti, Shaketa, Vaishali, Varanasi, and Rajagriha. It is believed to have been at the site of present-day Bhagalpur in northeastern India or its vicinity, just south of the Ganges River. Shakyamuni Buddha visited Champa several times to preach. According to The Record of the Western Regions, Hsüan-tsang's record of his travels through Central Asia and India during the seventh century, when he visited Champa, he saw dozens of monasteries, though many were in disrepair; he reported that about two hundred monks were studying the Hinayana doctrines in those monasteries.
