Suchi Mudra

Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Suchi Mudra Mean?

Suchi mudra is a yogic hasta (“hand”) gesture and one of a series of therapeutic mudras believed to have healing properties. The term is derived from the Sanskrit suchi, meaning “needle,” and mudra, meaning “gesture” or “seal.” It represents the Supreme Soul, or creator god, Brahma.

To perform this mudra, the thumb forms a fist with the middle, ring and little fingers, and the forefinger extends upward similar to a “Number One” gesture.

Yogapedia Explains Suchi Mudra

As with any hasta mudra, suchi mudra is most beneficial when meditating, but it can be practiced while seated, prone, standing or even walking, as long as the body is relaxed and the posture is symmetrical. Practicing suchi mudra is thought to relieve a range of blocking ailments and emotions that have been held in, including:

  • Digestive problems
  • Impatience and rage
  • Possessiveness, spite and jealousy
  • Stress caused by the blocking of emotions

For prolonged constipation, this mudra should be practiced for six breaths four times per day with the focus on the navel and pelvic chakras (energy centers). Elimination is not only important for cleansing the body, but also the mind and soul. Chronic constipation can lead to other medical and emotional problems. Practicing meditation with suchi mudra, therefore, helps keep the body in prime condition.

Suchi mudra is also thought to develop leadership qualities, efficiency and discipline.
