Definition - What does Tantric Meditation mean?

Tantric meditation is a dynamic form of meditation that awakens consciousness for the purpose of liberating shakti energy. In fact, Tantra is derived from the Sanskrit, tan, meaning “expansion,” and tra, meaning “liberation.” This type of meditation is in contrast to most yogic meditation as practiced in the West, where the goal is tranquility and relaxation.

Tantra practices and meditation have become associated with spiritual sexuality, particularly in the West. In the many books, websites and classes that tout this definition of Tantra, the belief is that sex can elevate the yogi to a higher spiritual plane. Traditionalists consider this as a misinterpretation of Tantra and even accuse those cashing in on the trend of misleading the public.

Yogapedia explains Tantric Meditation

Traditional Tantric meditation expands the mind and activates consciousness in conjunction with Kriya yoga. Through meditation, the yogi activates the chakras, freeing shakti to flow from the muladhara (root) chakra up the spine to the sahasrara (crown) chakra, which is the connection to spirituality. By freeing this energy through Tantric meditation, the yogi awakens the entire body and consciousness.

The yogi then directs the shakti from his/her head to form a body of energy and light in front of him/her. It is to this body of energy that the meditating yogi can direct love. He/she then can invite the energy to return through his/her head and down through the chakras to the muladhara.
