The Three Accomplishments from Cultivating the Hevajra Tantra are Illusory Body, Clear Light, and Perfect Enlightenment – Grand Master Lu’s Dharma Talk after the Kalachakra Homa Ceremony at the Rainbow Temple in Seattle, US on August 31, 2008

Translated by Lianhua Zhiwei, Edited by Jason Yu
Release Date: September 30, 2009
I sincerely pay homage to Reverend Liaoming, Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong, His Holiness the Sixteenth Karmapa, and Vajra Acharya Thubten Dargye. Homage to the Three Jewels of the Shrine. Homage to the main deity of the homa, the great Kalachakra. Homage to the multitude of venerable beings. Homage to Shimu, fellow vajra masters, senior reverends, reverends, dharma instructors, dharma assistants, chapters’ leaders, and fellow school members, good afternoon to you all.

I pray that attendees of yesterday and today’s ceremony receive the blessing power and have their wishes granted. I pray that Amitabha Buddha, Hevajra, Kalachakra, Golden Mother and their holy retinue can help resolve all of the attendees’ problems and difficulties, enabling everyone to be blessed and fortunate (audience applause).

I only discussed the preface of “Emptiness Within Great Bliss: The Essences of the Hevajra Tantra” in my talk yesterday. Today, I will continue the talk on the preface. The main subject of the preface is the affinity that led to the writing of “Emptiness Within Great Bliss.” The affinity started with the holy students of Chicago Leizang Temple requesting Grand Master to give the Hevajra teaching.

Next, the preface discussed our lineage transmission. Our True Buddha School’s lineage is extraordinary. Our Kalachakra Tantra lineage originated from the Ninth Panchen Lama. My teacher, Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong, received the Ninth Panchen Lama’s Kalachakra teaching in the Yushu area of [China's] Qinghai province. I, in turn, received the Kalachakra Tantra transmission from Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong. The True Buddha School’s second lineage of Kalachakra Tantra originated from Kanjurwa Khutughtu. My teacher, Vajra Acharya Thubten Dargye, was the student in the line of one of Kanjurwa Khutughtu’s disciples. Vajra Acharya Thubten Dargye passed onto me the teaching of the Kalachakra Tantra as taught by Kanjurwa Khutughtu. Kanjurwa Khutughtu]] was one of the highest ranking living buddhas of Mongolia. The highest-ranking living buddha of Mongolia was Jebtsundamba Khutughtu. [[Kanjurwa and Chankya Khutughtu were ranked slightly behind him. Both Kanjurwa and Chankya Khutughtu were highly honored by the Manchu (Qing) Dynasty and the government of the Republic of China.

Today, I am wearing the hat of the Sakya School. Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong was one of the Sakya teachers who was genuinely capable of teaching the Hevajra Tantra and who truly possessed Hevajra Tantra transmission. The Sakya School has two leaders. One of them is H. H. Sakya Trizin in India. The other is H. H. Sakya Dagchen Rinpoche in Seattle. Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong’s niece is married to H. H. Sakya Dagchen Rinpoche. Three members of Sakya School possess genuine transmission of the Hevajra Tantra. Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong possessed Hevajra Tantra transmission and hence Grand Master has it as well.

What about the source of our Yamantaka Tantra lineage? Thubten Lama taught my master, Vajra Acharya Thubten Dargye, the Yamantaka Tantra. Vajra Acharya Thubten Dargye subsequently gave me the Yamantaka teaching and the tantra text. Hence, I have the Yamantaka transmission. Every tantra requires an unbroken lineage transmission. I originally had only one copy of the Yamantaka Tantra text and it was stored in the security safe in the True Buddha Tantric Quarter. One time, I gave the text to Vajra Master Lianning to copy. He made two copies. He gave me one copy and the other copy is stored at the Tantric Quarter. You didn’t take the text out to read, right? (Grand Master and audience laughed) Master Lianning embarrassingly said that he had read most of the text. He is very honest. He didn’t say that he had not read it. We should praise him for his honesty (applause). After receiving the sadhana text, people would generally read the entire text carefully because it contains many great secrets.

We know that Hevajra has eight consorts. The main consort is the wisdom dakini in the center, Nairatmya. Then, who is Yamantaka’s consort? Yamantaka’s main consort is Sarasvati. Kalachakra’s main consort is Sri Maha Devi. Whenever you recite Hevajra’s mantra, you should chant the mantra of his other half, Nairatmya Dakini, as well. The same applies to chanting the mantra of Kalachakra or Yamantaka. You should also recite their consort’s mantra as well. This is a very important point that everyone should remember. Then, everything will be perfect.

Of course, buddha fields are drastically different from the human realm. When I saw Chen Chuang-fang today, I told her that I had retold all her stories and jokes as of yesterday. I didn’t have any more stories to tell, so there wasn’t much to say today. Then, she wrote down three stories for me. One story goes like this. There was a person who never had any religious belief. But, he developed strong faith one day. Someone asked him, “What caused the sudden change?” He replied, “My wife changed my mind.” So, what does he believe now? He believes that there is such a thing as hell on earth. Why do you think that Columbus was able to discover the New World? The reason is that he wasn’t married. So, he could travel far away for months at a time and didn’t have to go home. That could have never happened if he was married. Heaven and earth are different. If he had been married, his wife would want to know, “Why are you going so far away for so long? Who else is going with you?” His wife wouldn’t let him go. So, there would be many problems to deal with.

You can see that Grand Master firmly believes in heaven and hell just by observing Grand Master’s relationship with Shimu. Why? I’m a male chauvinist and never believed that anyone could control me. But, I am always home on time. My car almost ran out of gas once, so I had to stop by the gas station for a bit. As soon as I got home that day, Shimu asked, “You were out for an extra ten minutes. Where were you during those ten minutes?” Wow! She was questioning me for being ten minutes late. So, I pulled out the receipt from the gas station. Then, the tension eased. Amitabha Buddha. It wasn’t that bad. I am exaggerating.

In relationships, women tend to speak louder before marriage. Men tend to speak louder after marriage. Their relationship is different after getting married. There was a husband who always spoke in a loud voice to his wife. Then, he suddenly changed and only spoke in a very soft voice. So, people asked his wife, “Why doesn’t your husband yell and talk loudly anymore?” The wife responded, “I hid his dentures.”

Let’s not get sidetracked too much. We still must talk about Buddha-dharma. We have two guests who are professors conducting research on religion. They are Professor Tang and Professor Wu (applause). Every time we eat together, Professor Tang remains very quiet and doesn’t have any questions. On the other hand, Professor Wu always has some questions. These questions are also Buddha-dharma, so I have to share them with everyone. These two professors visited every True Buddha School chapter and temple in Taiwan (applause). Professor Wu found that five True Buddha School chapters claimed to be the very first chapter of True Buddha School. Not one chapter claimed to be the second chapter of True Buddha School. He asked me about this issue.

I replied that this is normal human behavior. Everyone claims that he/she is number one. So, everyone is number one. Then, Grand Master becomes number two. This means that the mediocre Grand Master is guiding all these number one True Buddha School students. This is normal human psychology! In reality, there is nothing wrong for everyone to claim to be number one. Shakyamuni Buddha had ten great disciples and they were all the authority in a particular field. One disciple was foremost in hearing dharma teachings. Then, there was the one who was foremost in miraculous power, foremost in wisdom, foremost in delivering sentient beings, etc. His students were all number one. So, all of our True Buddha School’s students, vajra acharyas, senior reverends, reverends, dharma instructors, dharma assistants, chapter leaders, and all of the school members are all number one. Everyone is number one when he/she attains buddhahood. This was my response to Professor Wu’s question. In actuality, the very first chapter was Grand Master’s Ling Shen Ching Tze [the name for Grand Master's home shrine in Taiwan; also the original name for Seattle Leizang Temple). Without Grand Master’s Ling Shen Ching Tze, where would all these other chapters come from? Therefore, what more needs to be said about these other chapters when even Grand Master is claiming to be number one?

Professor Wu also asked another more important question. He said that Padmasambhava taught us to honor the guru, treasure the dharma, and cultivate diligently. So, he asked True Buddha School’s students about the meaning of diligent cultivation. He said that he received several different answers. Some answers were the four preliminary practices, meditation, one daily practice session, and other explanations. This is my response to his question on what diligent cultivation was: applying your abilities to their fullest in whatever challenges and situations you encounter is precisely diligent cultivation (applause). Some of our True Buddha School students said that performing good deeds is diligent practice. They said that cultivation is to reform all our habitual tendencies completely and that is precisely diligent cultivation. I told Professor Wu that these responses were also right. All their answers were right. Everyone’s answer was right.

Here’s something that I often say. “Do all the little things well. Take care of all the little things around you.” Finish them all perfectly. That is diligent cultivation. That is doing something big. Many people cultivate diligently at Seattle Leizang Temple. Reverend Xuanren is a safe driver and responsible for transporting many students between Seattle Leizang Temple and SeaTac Airport. As long as he perfectly completes this task, he has diligently cultivated. Reverend Jiuru is responsible for food services at the Temple. Her diligent cultivation is to manage the kitchen and make sure it runs smoothly, make sure all the food is tasty, and make sure that everyone is full and happy with the food. Dharma brother and sister Zhang from Texas prepared delicious food, and this is their diligent cultivation. As another example, the clothes that Grand Master wears for the dharma ceremony have to be color-coordinated. The dharma crown and the dragon robe that I wore for yesterday and today’s ceremonies were color-coordinated. Everyone who saw my attire felt the clothing went together and looked very dignified. That is also diligent cultivation. Every night before you go to sleep, you perform the dream yoga. You set down a protective boundary and perform various practices before you sleep, so you get a good night’s sleep. That is also diligent cultivation.

I often say that I understand and can hear buddhas and bodhisattvas very clearly. But, I can’t always understand Reverend Xingmei. She worked very hard to speak clearly, so Grand Master could understand her. Finally, one day, I was able to understand her clearly. I feel that Reverend Xingmei’s heart is very beautiful. Her effort was diligent cultivation. She was here before the building of Seattle Leizang Temple. Today, many people have left the temple, but she is still here. Xingmei really has “xingmei” (a beautiful heart). That’s her diligent cultivation (applause).

So, apply yourself fully and pour your heart into everything you do. Apply yourself with utmost dedication to every task, whether it is volunteer work, taking care of your responsibilities as a human being, delivering sentient beings, exercising compassion, charitable work, etc. They are all diligent cultivation. So, diligent cultivation is not limited to four preliminary practices, meditation, etc. Do every task well, even the smallest task. Accumulating your provision/blessings in heaven is diligent cultivation.

There remains one extremely important task and that is to reform your habits. Everyone has countless habitual tendencies and these tendencies have to be changed. Some people can become easily jealous, envious, etc. As a cultivator, you have to change. Grand Master learned Buddha’s teachings to deliver sentient beings. Grand Master hopes every sentient being does well, so it doesn’t matter if I have to take a back seat. So, don’t get jealous and envious. Grand Master hopes that every vajra master achieves accomplishment. I hope every vajra master, senior reverend, reverend, dharma instructor, dharma assistant, school member, chapter leaders, all of you have greater accomplishment than I do have. That will make Grand Master very happy (applause). So, don’t feel jealous or envious. Everyone should cultivate diligently and work hard to change their bad habitual tendencies. This is diligent cultivation. So, what do we mean by diligent cultivation? It means that every task in this world is diligent cultivation.

Yesterday, I mentioned the issue about money. I said that we as cultivators see money as a small matter. The Buddha also had said that having money is not necessarily a blessing. Sometimes having money can be a curse because money is like a double-edged sword that cuts both ways, linking good and bad fortune. Yesterday, I referenced a famous person in Taiwan who is suffering because of money. I never get involved in politics, but all his problems were caused by money (translator’s note: Grand Master was referencing Taiwan’s former President Chen Shui-bian, who was being imprisoned and prosecuted for corruption charges). If this famous person doesn’t have money, he would sleep soundly and wouldn’t have all these problems. So, having money can be a source of problems. Having large sums of money can be even more problematic. In reality, he only really needs a small amount of money, enough money to last him a lifetime and that should have been fine.

This is what Chen Chuang-fang has to say about money: Money can buy you blood, but it can’t buy you more life. Money can buy you a house, but not a family. Grand Master may be able to marry a twenty-year old girl. Did I say that aloud? I dare not to say that. Amitabha Buddha. You can buy someone’s companionship, but not that person’s genuine love. Money can cause war, but it can’t buy peace. Money can buy you books like “Emptiness Within Great Bliss,” but it can’t buy you enlightenment. Money isn’t all-powerful. But, she also had this one caveat – you can’t do anything without money either.

So, that’s the way it is! On the issue of money, True Buddha School’s teachings recognize that we can’t survive without money. So, everyone should work hard to earn money through proper and ethical means. Grand Master isn’t advocating that people shouldn’t try to earn money, and spend all their time performing prayers. I can’t say that we have our provision in heaven, so gods will provide us with clothing, food, and all our material needs. Is it possible to live if you don’t go out and earn money? It is not possible. So, Grand Master says it is okay to work hard and make money. However, I want to add that your money must be obtained through ethical means.

Shimu said that we should be pragmatic and not be influenced by political slogans like “I love Taiwan’s money.” I also love Renminbi, I also have Renminbi, and so I would have been able to buy tickets to watch the Beijing Olympics’ Opening Ceremony. You can’t go into the stadium to watch the opening or closing ceremonies if you don’t have money. All the performances require money to put on. Many undertakings cannot be accomplished without money. But we, True Buddha School members, must remember that we can only make money through ethical means. (applause).

Of course, my teacher Vajra Acharya Sakya Zhengkong also taught me many keys to cultivating the Hevajra Tantra. I will explain them in detail in the future. I diligently cultivated the practices of the Hevajra Tantra. I also have a personal collection of texts on the Hevajra Tantra, such as the Hevajra Tantra Root Text. Vajra Master Lianman has given me a copy of “The Scriptural Text of the Ritual of the Great King of the Teaching, the Adamantine One with Great Compassion and Knowledge of the Void explained by Buddha” as offering. Many students have given me copies of “Sri Hevajra Binding-of-Wheels Wellspring of Nectar” as offering as well. The last student who gave me this scripture was chapter leader Yang of Taiwan’s Zhuangyan Leizang Temple. I also have a copy of Lamdre that was given to me by my teacher, which has a Chinese translation. “The Compendium of Important Esoteric Mahayana Practices,” which contains the Hevajra Tantra, is also available in Chinese. It might not be possible for you to be here in person when I start to give detailed teachings on the Hevajra Tantra based on “Emptiness Within Great Bliss.” I will explain all forty-three chapters of my book in detail, chapter by chapter. Can you possibly be here for the teachings on all forty-three chapters? I hope to give talks on the Hevajra Tantra from chapter one to forty-three sequentially. You can read up on what I have taught through True Buddha News, Enlightenment Magazine, the web, or through DVD. Wherever I teach, they will make a DVD. So, collect all the DVDs and cultivate the Hevajra Tantra thoroughly.

The Hevajra Tantra is equivalent to the fundamental heruka tantra of all heruka tantras. Tilopa passed down the Hevajra teaching to Naropa in India. Naropa transmitted it to Marpa. Marpa’s principal deity was Hevajra. The name of Marpa’s wife was Dagmema, which is Tibetan for Nairatmya (the name of Hevajra’s main consort in Sanskrit). Marpa attained enlightenment through the Hevajra Tantra. This teaching was originally transmitted within the Kagyu sect, but the Sakya sect became the school that places the greatest importance on this teaching.

The practices of the Hevajra Tantra include the essence of the sadhanas of all the five great heruka tantrasHevajra, Cakrasamvara, Guhyasamaja, Yamantaka, and Mahamaya. This would also include Kalachakra. All the heruka tantras inherited the instructions and methods for accomplishment and cultivations of the Hevajra Tantra. Hence, you can achieve accomplishment in all other heruka tantras as long as you have achieved accomplishment in the Hevajra Tantra. By listening to Hevajra teachings, you will have insight into all five heruka tantras. Tibetan Buddhism’s heruka tantras do not include Ucchusma Tantra. In my earlier writings, I had included Ucchusma as one of the five herukas of Tibetan Buddhism and that was an error. It should have been Guhyasamaja instead. Guhyasamaja is not the same as Ucchusma and Mahamaya is not the same as Kalachakra. Everyone should pay attention to this issue.

All the subsequent heruka tantras inherited the Hevajra Tantra’s organization and progression. We can say that the dharma stream of the Hevajra Tantra transformed into five heruka tantras. The Hevajra Tantra is one of the most important of all the heruka tantras. The Hevajra Tantra has illusory body accomplishment, which enables “spiritual travel.” The spirit of the cultivator can leave his body and travel to heaven, earth, and even to the Buddha’s vajra throne. Furthermore, you can even control your own reincarnation. This is called mastery of life and death illusory body.

The second accomplishment of the Hevajra Tantra is to possess the radiance of the great sun. The Sixth Gungthang Rinpoche (called Gongtang Cang in China, 1926-2000) had written a letter to me about one of his visions. He also told others about this vision. He saw Grand Master seated in the center of the sun in a vision during his meditation (applause). This was Gungthang Rinpoche’s own testimony and it is very genuine. As a result, he made a special detour to meet me in person. Originally, he could have just made his transfer at California and then flew directly back to China. Instead, he specifically chose to make his transfer at SeaTac Airport in Seattle, so he could come to meet me in person before he returned to China. This was what Gungthang Rinpoche told me in person.

Gungthang Rinpoche was a great tulku who also transmitted the Kalachakra Tantra. His monastery is the Labrang Monastery in China’s Gansu province. There are many tulkus at that monastery. The foremost tulku is Jamyang Shepa Rinpoche. Gungthang Rinpoche was one of five great tulkus seated equally at Labrang Monastery.

The Hevajra Tantra has clear light accomplishment. Grand Master originated from the great all illuminating radiance (Vairocana). The Hevajra Tantra has great all illuminating radiance accomplishment. The luminosity of all illuminating radiance accomplishment permeates the entire world. Hence, Grand Master’s radiance permeates the entire world after he had attained accomplishment in the Hevajra Tantra. You are the source of light when you attain the Hevajra Tantra’s second accomplishment. The light will be passed from Grand Master to you, and you can pass the light onto everyone else in the world. You can also transmit the luminous dharma stream to everyone else. You would have gained success in your Hevajra Tantra cultivation and attained the second accomplishment.

The Hevajra Tantra’s third accomplishment is perfect enlightenment accomplishment. What is perfect enlightenment accomplishment? It is achieving the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha. Then, you experientially realize the enlightenment. This is called Perfect Enlightenment. You not only attain perfect realization, but you can also assist other sentient beings to attain realization. This is perfect enlightenment accomplishment. The three great accomplishment of the Hevajra Tantra are illusory body, clear light, and perfect enlightenment accomplishments.

Personally speaking, Grand Master is without fear. Why am I without fear? Dharma Sister Yaqi Xu had expressed concern about me being in danger. I explained to her that nobody could really harm Grand Master. Why does Grand Master make such a bold statement? This is because I am carefree and unattached to any outcome. My heart is without any abiding. The Sixth Patriarch Huineng was suddenly filled with dharma bliss after he had heard this verse from the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedika-prajnaparamita-sutra), “How should Bodhisattvas and Mahasattvas aspire a pure heart? The pure heart should be generated by not abiding in form, not abiding in sound, flagrance, flavor, touch, or appearance. They should generate the pure heart without any abiding.” Although this verse filled him with great dharma bliss, he had not yet achieved enlightenment.

[In response to Shenxiu’s verse on his realization:

The body is like the bodhi-tree

The mind’s like a bright mirror stand

Wipe them constantly

Let no dust alight

Master Huineng had composed this verse:]

There isn’t a Bodhi tree

Nor is the stand a bright mirror

All are inherently empty

Where does dust alight?

This verse from Huineng is very famous. Many people feel that this verse demonstrates enlightenment. It does not. It only showed that Master Huineng was close to enlightenment. Why is that? This is because he didn’t explain why there isn’t a Bodhi tree; nor why there was no bight mirror; nor why they are both inherently empty? You have to explain the reason behind it in order to demonstrate enlightenment. Hence, the Fifth Patriarch Hongren had to explain the reason to Huineng, and then Huineng became enlightened.

I once asked Master Lianning, “You have seen Master Huineng’s sariras-remains in Nanhua Temple. Then, where is the Sixth Patriarch Huineng right now?” Master Lianning replied, “He is huge like a great circle when he is large. He is small like a dot when he is small.” I can give that kind of answer as well. The real answer is that he is like the moon cruising on thousands of streams and ponds. Do you understand this statement? He is like the moon shining on the pond, ocean, and all the multitudes of streams, rivers. This is like a moon cruising on thousands of streams. That is the right answer.

Dharma brother Liang Yong from Brazil asked a Reverend to give me a white piece of paper when I had asked this question about Huineng. I put the white paper on the table and stared at it a bit. Then, I put it aside. I said that this white paper was not suitable for painting. It was too thick for use as toilet paper. What use was this paper? You couldn’t assemble it into a book. I said that it didn’t pass the requirement, not good enough. He said that he wanted to explain his answer. I asked him to elaborate. I wanted to hear his explanation. He gave me a white sheet of paper. I told him why he didn’t give me a sesame flatbread. The white paper wasn’t any use to me. I value sesame flatbread much more because it could fill my stomach, it smells good, and I might spill some of the sesame seeds on the floor.

Another one of Chen Chuang-fang’s jokes went like this: Two mental patients are looking at a book and talking about it. They both think it is extremely well written and truly a monumental work. It is simple and powerful. There was not a useless word in the entire book. The nurse saw them together and said, “Why are you flipping through the phone book? Put it away.”

Grand Master’s book on the Essence of the Hevajra Tantra is the real masterpiece. Those who can attain its essence can achieve three great accomplishments. Enlightenment is not easy. I had visited Bodhgaya (where the Buddha attained enlightenment). I saw many people seated under the Bodhi Tree waiting to become enlightened. The Mahabodhi Monastery was filled with monks, including members of Hinayana, Mahayana, Tibetan Buddhism, etc. All the various schools of Buddhism were represented. All of them were there to cultivate Buddhism. Everyone was waiting for enlightenment below the Bodhi tree. We can’t say that they are wrong. They are meditating on holy ground that contains spiritual energy. Maybe they will be able to achieve enlightenment soon.

I know what Shakyamuni Buddha’s realization is. His realization is extremely difficult for mundane people to even guess or imagine. His realization is unimaginable. Hence, no attainment, no thoughts, no attachment, and all are empty: none of these is realization. It is only close to enlightenment. I ask people why is it like this? The realization of Shakyamuni Buddha is the reason why is it like this.

Hence, I didn’t say Liangyong was wrong for giving me a blank piece of paper. I thought he was right. That white piece of paper was emptiness. This answer is the same as Huineng’s answer of no Bodhi tree, no mirror, and inherent emptiness. But, the Buddha realized why this is so. Grand Master realized that “it turns out to be this.” Some students had sent me my statement, “it turns out to be this,” as their answers because I had said “it turns out to be this.” I can say “it turns out to be this” because I know why! You have to be able to explain why! You can’t just copy the statement “it turns out to be this.” Don’t flash the technique of “white crane shows its wings” because I flashed the technique of “golden rooster stands on one foot.” I can explain why the answer is “golden rooster stand on one foot.” You have to explain why your answer is “white crane shows its wings.” The Venerable Mahakasyapa achieved enlightenment upon seeing Shakyamuni Buddha holding a flower. Mahakasyapa was the disciple foremost in ascetic practices. I am asking you why Shakyamuni Buddha held up a flower? Why doesn’t everyone who holds up a flower achieve enlightenment? If everyone who holds up a flower would achieve enlightenment, then everyone should have achieved enlightenment last night when he/she held up the fluorescent stick. Why didn’t everyone achieve enlightenment? Why? This is the crucial point.

So, don’t write me answers like carefree without attachment, no attainment, no abiding, it turns out to be this, lions and dogs originally were like this, etc. These are not the answer. I am asking you why it is like this. I have already explained very clearly the reason. If you really contemplate it over, you will certainly find the answer. You must realize this answer in practice after you find it. No one can harm you after you put the realization into practice. Then, you can be truly carefree without attachment, without abiding, and can have no attainment. You will walk between heaven and earth as a truly holy saint.

Now, I finally understand. Everyone knows of Confucius, the great sage of China. Yet, nobody knows who his wife is. Okay, I am going to ask a question. What is the surname of Confucius’s wife? Whoever answers this question will win the vajra that I am holding. Master Lianyin said that nobody knows the answer. Then, I am taking back the vajra. Does anybody know her surname? You see, nobody knows.
