Understanding Reality and Quantum Fabric with String Theory and Mind Only School

David Foo Choo Fatt

Abstract

Consciousness is always misunderstood to be just mental processes. The definition and understanding of consciousness in science today are very narrow and myopic. This limitation is comparable to the old world-view of the world is flat. Consciousness, in particular the 8th Consciousness, is not just mental but also physical. 8th Consciousness which each of us has a copy is constantly working without us knowing even when we are sleeping, in coma, or in-between lifetimes. It is said to hold our body and body functions and present to us the entire view of our universe. This is the 11th dimension in M-theory which connects to every point in our three-dimensional world. No body understands quantum mechanics because nobody understands how 8th Consciousness work. Quantum mechanics is all about wave and

wave function collapse after a measurement is made. It is debated if a conscious observer is required. Quantum wave function is said to collapse once it interacts with external environment. The interaction of external environment are the interaction of infinite beings8th Consciousness which is taking place constantly without us realizing, at least, not based on what we are capable of measuring today. In other

words, the quantum field is a cocreation of infinite beings which have been metaphorically told as the Indra’s net in Mind-Only school. We each is a microscopic quantum field, though have not been explicitly stated, is the consistent theme since Paper I. Each of us is said to have 22 Indriyas, 12 Ayatana, 8th Consciousness and 5 Skandas. They correspond to bosonic, hologram, M-theory, F-theory, and superstring in

string theory. As string theory can be viewed as a quantum theory, therefore, each of us is truly a microscopic quantum field. As one of the early founders of quantum mechanics, Albert Einstein wasn’t comfortable with quantum mechanics as he thoughtGod does not play dice” even till the day he died. Another well-known physicist Gerald ‘t Hooft had in many occasions expressed that he is not satisfied with quantum mechanics. ‘t Hooft is not rejecting quantum mechanics, he explicitly said that he accepts it in full but thinks there is something deeper below to be understood. The intent of this paper, seventh in the series, is to take a deeper dive into reality using the theory of Mind-Only school and explain the similar concepts in string theory.

1 Nature of Quantum Fabric

The following figure which is our central theme from Paper I to VI is repeated in the following figure. Note that each sentient being has an entire set of the following components. To be specific, using string theory’s term, each of us or being has a set of 22 extra dimensions, access to the universe’s hologram, 11th dimension, 12th dimension, and 6 extra dimensions with space-time dimensions being constructed which are emergent. The set, using the terms of Mind-Only school, each of us has 22 Indriyas, access to 12 Ayatana, 8th Consciousness, 7th Consciousness, and first 6 Consciousness.

Figure 1 Each sentient being has a full set of the above

String theory, which can be considered as a quantum theory, is sometimes called a theory of quantum gravity which unifies quantum mechanics and general relativity. As a theory of everything, it is used also in understanding cosmology as well as black holes. As string theory is a quantum theory and each of possesses a full set of all those components, it means, undoubtedly, that each of us is a quantum field! At least

microscopically. There is a macroscopic quantum field which then is the cocreation of infinite beings. It is important to stress that Consciousness, specifically the 8th Consciousness defined in Mind-Only school, is not just mental but also physical. It is the 8th Consciousness which governs and presents the physical phenomena to each of us and that include the quantum layer of reality as well.

2 Einstein’s Moon

Albert Einstein once asked: “Is the Moon there when nobody looks?”. This is still being debated today. There was a similar question by a scholar in ancient China in which he asked do the flowers in the mountain blossom when nobody looks? To understand the above, we have to understand how the Moon and flowers works.

Our bodies are made up by atoms as we understand today. The nucleus of an atom is very small compared to its size or circumference where electrons are orbiting. Things that we think we touch are also the same. We know from physics that electron and electron not only expel, also by Pauli’s exclusion principle, as fermions, electrons also can’t occupy the same place and hence can’t touch each other. Therefore, many physicists think that we can’t actually touch anything and our sense of touch must somehow be an illusion.

It was mentioned in Paper II, according to the theory of Mind-Only school, we cannot experience anything outside of our 8 Consciousness or the 8 extra dimensions. This is exactly what physics today realizes mentioned above.

Figure 2 Each of Us is a Quantum Field

This means we each is “living” in our own universe as shown in the above figure. And there isn’t an objective independent shared universe out there. Each of us “lives” in a world of our own consisting of our own set of 22 Indriyas, access to 12 Ayatana, 8th Consciousness, 7th Consciousness, and first 6 Consciousness.

So, when a person, say A, is looking at the Moon, A has to generate his own photons to see the Moon as shown in the following figure (Sun is used instead of Moon which has the same meaning). Similarly, when person B looks at the Moon, B also has to generate his own photons in order for him to see the Moon.

Figure 3 Quantum Fields and the Moon

Please note that though A is said to generate his own photons to see the Moon but A cannot generate the photons by himself or herself, A has to rely on infinite beings to help A to generate the photons. Same rule applies to B.

The question then is what happen when Einstein, A, and his friend, B, are not looking at the Moon, is the Moon still there? The answer is an affirmative yes. This is because, the Moon is “created” by infinite beings’ macroscopic quantum field, so, even when A and B are not looking, or there is a complete destruction of human race or even life on Earth, the Moon is still there for two reasons. The first reason is that there are still infinite beings out there as the definition of beings include celestial objects like planets, stars, nebulae, black holes, and so on. This has been discussed in earlier papers specifically Paper V - From Astrophysics to Astrosafari of Rupaloka and Arupaloka through String Theory in Mind-Only School.

The second and most important reason is that this macroscopic quantum field of cocreation by infinite being is the collection of infinite 8th Consciousness or the 11th dimension which never stop working – even in between lifetimes. 3 Water Molecules in the Ocean

“Trying to follow the behavior of individual strings is similar to trying to follow the behavior of individual water molecules in the ocean – you just can’t do it” .

8th Consciousness, or 11th dimension in string theory, is said to be like a waterfall in which the Seeds are like water molecules, flowing non-stop. However, it must be noted, according to Mind-Only school, that the water molecules, or Seeds, at the previous moment and the water molecules at this moment are completely different. They are changing at fraction of a second. They can look the same but totally different. It is like the image of a TV screen where the images are changing in fraction of a second with all LED dots also changing at each fraction of a second.

Consciousness or 8th Consciousness, as explained in previous papers, is not just psychological or mental as many people think today, it can be physical as it holds our

body and body functions and view of entire universe. 11th dimension which is 8th Consciousness is said to connect to every point of our three-dimensional world.

The conclusion from the above is that a cup that you see now, though seems very close or the same as the cup a second ago are completely “different cups”. Think of the image of a cup on a TV screen, at rate of 25 frames per second, the cup on the TV screen has changed 25 times a second and different from the cup a second ago. Though they look the same. Similarly, in the following figure, A’s view of the cup and B’s view of the same cup are different. As time passes, each fraction of the second, the views of the same cup also change and never be the same.

Figure 4 Water Molecules in the Ocean

The “same cup” can be considered as different views but can also be four different cups. The reason why there are four different cups is that the cup physically changes from a fraction of a second to the next so slightly that it is not noticeable. Also according to the theory, each of us cannot experience anything outside our Consciousness and therefore, we are simply making up the images of the cups ourselves. This is the meaning of water molecules in the ocean or waterfall.

4 Photon Doesn’t Travel

Speed of light remains constant at 299,792,458 meters per second, regardless of how it is measured, is a big mystery but many has stopped to investigate why. In fact, with the above understanding, the mystery can be solved because photon doesn’t travel. A photon a second ago and a photon now seems to have travelled 300,000 kilometers is only an illusion. As every point in our three-dimensional world is connected to the 11th dimension, and because strings or Seeds are like water molecules in the ocean, a photon a second ago and another photon which we think is the same photon a second later are two completely different photons.

According to Mind-Only school, every fraction of a second, the Seeds in our 8th Consciousness is different. Some of them when conditions are met become phenomena.

We have mentioned in Paper VI - Understanding Karma of Five Fruits in Five Superstring in String Theory with Mind Only School, phenomena are also Seeds. It is also mentioned that both phenomena and Seeds are strings. They are different types of strings, in heterotic strings, the former are Type II strings and the later are bosonic strings.

Translated into string theory’s term, every fraction of a second, every single point of our three-dimensional universe is refreshed with all the strings completely changed in one fraction of second to the next. The photon we see at this second and the next second are two different photons and no photon travel. This gives us the illusion of distance.

Our experience of space, time, momentum, and etc., according to Mind-Only school is due to us submerging ourselves in oceans of strings. Though we could use equations to derive time dilation and space contraction but the mystery lies in oceans of strings or Seeds like water molecules in the ocean. Every reference frame has its ownconsciousness boundary” and is limited by speed of light which is constant and that is how the strings or the Seeds are generated in those frames.

5 Oceans of Strings

In order to understand this concept better, imagine you are watching a movie in which there is a car racing scene. You would feel that the racing cars are moving at very high speed. Sometimes you feel that the cars are in open space and sometimes they are moving in narrow streets. But the TV screen remains the same with the same LED dots. Also imagine through a virtual reality application with a pair of goggles or glasses, you are watching the world cup in Paris and you could feel the atmosphere of the stadium. But you are in your own living room. The LED dots are the oceans of strings and your living room is your non-locality.

Two thousand years ago, Mind-Only school explain reality using with the same underlying principle. But the most mind-boggling part of the theory is the following. Wheat grain as seed can grow into wheat grass which is a common knowledge is rejected as an illusion. Mind-Only school says that each wheat grain has its own Seeds (strings) and wheat grass also has its own Seeds (strings). When the Seeds of a wheat grass cease to exist, which gives place to the Seeds of wheat grass to arise only then we see the wheat grass. This is exactly like a movie scene on the TV screen when we see wheat grain where there are just some LED dots and later when we see the wheat grass which are also just some LED dots. The latter (LED dots) appears because the former (LED dots) has gone away.

Figure 5 Seeds and Illusion

Similarly, in the above figure, our conventional wisdom leads us to think that when a sperm enters into an egg, the egg becomes fertilized, then the embryo starts to develop, and finally there is a baby. To Mind-Only school this is also an illusion as each sperm, egg, fertilized egg, embryo at different stages, and baby all have their own Seeds. In fact, these Seeds or strings are flashing every fraction of a second just like the LED dots flashing on the TV screen, except that the former is much faster and in three dimensions, which give us the illusion. This is why the infinite number of strings with different masses and many unobserved particles in string theory which are thought to be major flaws are very necessary for a theory of consciousness.

We literally live in oceans of strings or the LED dots on the TV screens or, in the words of Leonard Susskind, “the world is a pixelated world”. Note that instead of the universe being a single 3-dimensional LED screen (if one exist), there are infinite LED screens with the infinite beings each owing one – just like each of us in virtual reality games. This has been covered in detail in Paper II - Understanding Holographic Principle in String Theory through Mind-Only School.

6 Time in a Pixelated World

String theorists like David Gross now think that ordinary space-time are emergent and they are our mental constructs and they are not “real”. But we are trapped in the cage of space-time at least since birth. It has been explained that photon actually doesn’t travel and how our illusion of space arises. Time is more mysterious than space, as we know space-time are related, and therefore the illusion of space produce by photons would certainly result in the illusion of time. The Yogacarabhumi Sastra, a major source text of Mind-Only school, has the following: “What are past, present, and future? All Seeds are part of laws, they establish the laws, from causes to effects, phenomena before occurring and those phenomena. For phenomena or effects, Seeds already disappeared are past, Seeds with hidden causes which have not occurred are future, Seeds already occurred but have not disappeared are

present. What are birth, aging, staying, and death? They are so named in all places where (8th) Consciousness is continuous and where all Seeds are occurring in a continuous sequence. Seeds occur according to conditions, those with conditions met and occur are called birth, those occurring and start to change are called aging. There are two types of change, different with change and change with change.”

Seeds here are particles or strings and they are like the LED dots on a TV screen. In a pixelated world, just like a LED dots on a TV screen, we can feel how fast or slow a scene is playing and experience time. We also experiencebirth, aging, staying, and death” just like how we experience movie scenes. Some scenes look the same but they are different because the LED dots have already been refreshed many times this is the “different with change” some scenes transiting from one to another and they have changed and is ”change with change”.

7 Eight Negations

There is a famous concept in Buddhism which is called the Eight Negations: “Neither birth nor extinction, neither cessation nor permanence, neither uniformity nor diversity, neither coming nor going.” The concept of Eight Negations is normally associated to the Madhyamaka school of Buddhism which is known for the philosophy of emptiness. However, both the concepts of emptiness and Eight Negations are not exclusive to Madhyamaka school but belong to Mahayana Buddhism which Mind-Only school is a part of. The [[concept of

emptiness]] is often quoted by many learned Buddhist monks and scholars to relate to quantum mechanics. This is because uncountable number of particles like photons can arise from any place which is apparently empty. But using the concepts of emptiness and Eight Negations from Madhyamaka school alone is far from sufficient to explain the quantum fabric and often sound mystically philosophical. These two concepts are best explained by the theory of Seeds and Consciousness in Mind Only school.

In Buddhism, there are different levels of truth, reality, or existence. It is must be clearly stated at which level of reality with regards where a certain concept is explained. The concept of Eight Negations belongs to the level of truth which is Nature of Ultimate Reality which will be explained after this. We will see that Ultimate Reality, which is free of concept, is related to imaginary number and complex plane. Above Ultimate Reality, it is Nature Dependent on Others which is classical physics and which we are being bounded daily. Therefore, one cannot explain the concepts loosely without specific reference. With the background explained above, it should be easy to understand the meaning of “neither birth nor extinction” with the examples of wheat grain, wheat grass, sperm, egg, and baby. String theory explains everything through vibrating strings. A string vibrate

differently becomes different particles. Strings can interact, they can join, or a string can also split into two strings. In reality they are all different strings from one fraction of a second to the next. This is the meaning of “neither birth nor extinction” or in string theory’s term, strings “neither split nor join”.

The cup example explains “neither cessation nor permanence” in which you can’t say the cup is in either state. Every fraction of a second the cup is a different cup altogether like the images on a TV screen that is impermanence but they look the same and therefore neither cessation. In reality, all our experiences are made up of Seeds or strings from one split second to the next, things apparently look the same are no longer the same and are different.

A photon is “neither coming nor going” as explained before photon or string doesn’t travel, they are totally different strings in each fraction of a second. This is non-locality. As mentioned, at the level above Ultimate Reality, we experience space and time, but this concept of Eight Negations is at the level of Nature of Ultimate Reality which is the imaginary number or complex plane it is free of concept and therefore no space and no time.

One way to explain “neither uniformity nor diversity” is wave-particle duality in quantum physics. Buddhist scholars when explaining this phrase like to quote the example of water waves and water molecules to say that they are “neither uniformity nor diversity”. But the best ways to explain this phrase is the concept of strings in string theory. String theory not only unify quantum mechanics and general relativity but also unifies all particles into vibrating strings. Strings vibrate differently become different particles.

All layman concepts and ideas according to Buddhism, in this case the physical ones, are “fake” according to Buddhism. In the terms of string theory or layman, “fake” means concepts that are emergent like space-time. Not only space-time is “fake”, all those that physics studies like momentum, position, velocity, and etc. are also “fake” or emergent. What is not “fake” to Mind-Only school are the 8 Consciousness or the 8 extra dimensions in string theory. This is what David Gross think – superspace and extra dimensions are more real compared to ordinary space-time. Space-time, momentum, velocity, and etc. in Buddhism belong to a class of law called the Dharmas not Integrative with Heart (Mind).

With the concepts covered above, it is not hard to understand spooky action at a distance where there is really no distance as the two entangled particles a second ago and the two particles now are two sets of different particles in which speed of light is a boundary of space-time which frame our conscious experiences. Similarly, there is really no tunneling as at every fraction of second the oceans of strings are completely refreshed and there is no particle which tunnels and there is nothing for anything to tunnel just like a magic can happen on a TV screen.

8 Three Natures

Before quantum mechanics coming into the scene, the world is classical. Though now some think that the world could be just quantum, but the main streams think that there are two worldsquantum and classical. They are the microscopic world of the very small scale and the macroscopic world of very large scale.

The world description in Mind-Only school is divided into three levels, which are also called Three Natures: “There are three aspects or natures of existence or being, under which all things may be regarded, depending upon the degree of true understanding which we ourselves possess of these things. They are called: (1) nature of imagination-only, (2) nature of dependence on others for manifestation, (3) nature of Ultimate Reality. These three aspects are generally known as the Three Natures.”

Though the Three Natures are normally used to explain mental factors or being, but as we have seen in all previous papers especially Paper V that our internal mental factors are strongly related to external factors or the world.

First level which is nature of imagination-only means we possess a nature in which we are taking what is not real as real. A frequent example quoted is taking a rope as a snake which we have covered in Paper IV. However, there are other meanings like a person imagining or attaching qualities or attributes which an item does not or even does process. For example, someone who was deceitfully told a painting is painted by a famous painter start to imagine its values. Even a person, say, who own a piece of genuine antique furniture and is proud of its origin, craftmanship, styles, and so on is said to be in the state of imagination-only. The reason being in reality it is nothing more than a piece of furniture. Strictly speaking, a person insisting a cup as a cup is also said to be in this state. The reason being according to Mind-Only school things like cups do not have their inherent nature which are just combination of names and forms.

Second, nature of dependence on others for manifestation means we are aware of the fact that phenomena exist due to multiple conditions. For example, a cup is made up of clay and porcelain paint. It takes a craftsman with tools and other conditions like water and a firing kiln to make. There are many other conditions like transport and shipping, merchants, and so on to reach us.

Nature of Ultimate Reality is said to possess five attributes: i. pervasively inherent in all places and all phenomena, ii. neither uniformity nor diversity, iii. non-duality, iv. beyond imagination, v. beyond words. It is said that the first two natures have this in them. Three Natures in reality are meant to explain existence and levels of reality and not just physiological states and therefore can be physical. The equivalence in physics respectively are: quantum nature, classical and non-quantum, and the imaginary number and complex planes as shown in the following figure.

Figure 6 Three Natures & Physics

In the above figure, Nature of Ultimate Reality is the imaginary number or complex plane, encompass all phenomena. Complex plane and imaginary number have been taken as mathematical abstraction appear everywhere:

“Things only really heated up in our understanding of the profound significance of i and the complex plane as a result of the early twentieth-century scientific revolutions. The advent of quantum theory doesn’t just use complex numbers as a useful tool, it actually requires the existence of the nonphysical complex plane that describes and plots such numbers to make sense of the deeper nature of reality. “ “Our perfect Universe can only be understood in terms of its manifesting from a more fundamental reality beyond its four-dimensional space-time appearance. The concept of i (the square root of −1), complex numbers, and the so-called complex plane, far more than just mathematical tools, are indeed the essential super physical underpinning to the appearance of physical reality.”

While there are mathematical definitions for complex plane and imaginary number but there is probably no better description other than the five attributes of Ultimate Reality stated above.

In quantum mechanics, all attributes of particles or systems like momentum, position, spin up spin down, and so on all come from the wave functions. These wave functions live in Hilbert space which depend on imaginary number and complex planes. Complex plane and imaginary number are not only used in quantum mechanics but also classical physics especially in wave equations. Classical mechanics which is a study of phenomena exist due to multiple conditions and has a dependent nature is not difficult to understand. Quantum mechanics is mainly the study of statistical behavior of waves prior to collapse of wave functions which then transit to classical mechanics. One of the most widely

accepted interpretation of quantum mechanics is the Copenhagen interpretation says that “wave function doesn’t have a physical nature”:

“The Copenhagen interpretation says that wave function doesn’t have a physical nature. Instead, it is comprised of pure possibility. It suggests that a particle traversing the double slit experiment exists only as a wave of possible locations that ultimately encompasses all possible paths. It is only when a particle is detected that a location and the path it took get there are decided. The Copenhagen interpretation calls this transition from a possibility space to a defined set of properties “the collapse of a wave function”. It tells us that prior to the collapse, it is meaningless to define a particle’s properties.”

That something which “doesn’t have a physical nature” comes into existence in the phenomena world when the system is observed: “During an observation, the system must interact with a laboratory device. When that device makes a measurement, the wave function of the systems is said to collapse, or irreversibly reduce to an eigenstate of the observable that is registered. The results provided by measuring devices are essentially classical, and should be described in ordinary language. This was particularly emphasized by Bohr, and was accepted by Heisenberg.”

This taking what is not real, without a physical nature, as real. Basically, quantum mechanics studies wave function which “doesn’t have a physical nature” and taking the outcome as real. What Figure 6 Three Natures & Physics shows is a simplification. Nature of imagination-only can also exist in nature of dependent on others and vice versa.

9 Reality

Copenhagen interpretation taking waves or wave functions, which do not have any physical nature, as merely possibilities. Question is are those waves really possibilities and nothing else? Many today have not totally bought into Copenhagen interpretation.

9.1 Indra’s Net

In the preface of her book The Cosmic Hologram In-formation at the Center of Creation, Jude Currivan wrote: “Imagine a shimmering net of light, without beginning or end. At each node of its weave and weft sits a shimmering jewel, and these myriad multifaceted jewels reflect and are each reflected by every other in rainbow-hued radiance of ever-changing illumination. Its

infinite oneness manifests in the uncountable creative gems through which its eternal cocreated. Some three thousand years ago or more, this ancient numinous image of the Cosmos was first expressed in the sacred Indian text of the Atharvaveda and termed Indra’s net; it was the means by which the Vedic deity Indra, god of the heavens, created the appearance of the whole world. Now, its revelation of integral reality and self-reflection at all scales of existence is being rediscovered and restated in a less poetic but equally majestic and scientifically based language.”

The story of Indra’s net is also found in, the Avatamsaka Sutra, one of the main source texts of Mind-Only school. The Indra’s net is also taken to be how the world is formed but metaphorically. The generic and mystical visual is translated to something very specific in which each jewel is a sentient being. Or each of us is a jewel which we affect others and others also affect us constantly and continuosly. This effect, “reflect and are each reflected by every other in rainbow-hued radiance of ever-changing illumination” in the terms of quantum mechanics, is each of us creating wave with its ripple affecting others and ripples of others also affecting us.

More concepts of Indra’s net will be shown in detail in Figure 10 Indra's Net - An Elementary Particle and

Figure 12 Indra's Net - Infinite Hilbert Spaces.

9.2 22 True Dimensions or Indriyas

There is another concept related to Indra which we have discussed in previous papers. Each of us is said to possess 22 Indriyas where Indriya has the meaning of “power belonging to Indra” (see Figure 1 Each sentient being has a full set of the above). Buddhism is not the only school, of religion and of philosophy, which has the concept of Indriya in ancient India. The uniqueness in Buddhism is that there are exactly 22 whereas other schools have it ranges from 1 to above a hundred. Also, Buddhism has very specific meaning and definition of the 22 which have been discussed in various papers and is repeated below.

It has been said in previous papers that the 22 Indriyas are the micro-codes of the universe. Basically, its four-class three-group definition give rise to all phenomena in the universe as shown in the following figure. Four classes are four types of interactions Type I to IV. In the following figure, a number is used instead of the names of the Indriyas.

The four-class three-group mixture give rise to bosonic, superstring, M-theory, and Ftheory. These 22 true dimensions (TD) also give rise to symmetry and even supersymmetry, gravity, EM, weak, and strong forces. The 22 TD also produces bosons and fermions, monopoles, tachyons, and etc. Tachyon though seems undesirable for physical theory is very necessary for a consciousness theory.

Figure 7 22 True Dimensions

One can imagine these 22 TD as basic instructions (or assembler codes) of a computer whereby everything in the computer nets down to these basic instructions. Note that the four-class grouping is related to Euler’s identity. There is a growing recognition that the entire universe is made of waves of energy. It can be seen in the above figure where Type I interaction is responsible for cosine waves. Type II interaction is responsible for sine waves but has Type III and IV hidden and they together form the Dependent interactions. That is why the proof of Euler’s identity relies on these two waves.

9.3 24 True Dimensions of the Universe

The question is why 22? There are two reasons for 22. First is that if we look at a circle, technically there are infinite numbers of ways we can divide a circle. In other words there are infinite number of degrees of freedom. One approximation of π is 22/7, though 355/113 is a closer approximation, but that will produce too many dimensions. Another reason is that the true dimensions of the universe is 24 which is related to the elliptic modular function.

In bosonic string theory, the 26 extra dimensions are first derived from the infinite sum of whole numbers of -1/12 and taking into account the probability of having or not having energy of ½ in a quantum state. These two numbers produce the product of -1/24. That’s where we got 24 dimensions. Note that -1/12 is being used to derive -1/24, that indicates the number 22 is a collapse of infinite number of sections or dimensions.

Unfortunately, it is the physicists who were working on this theory, they have to get “something” rather than “nothing” especially space-time. 2 dimensions are added after some operations in toroidal geometry to produce bosons. That is where we have gotten a 26-dimension bosonic string theory in which 4 are space-time dimensions.

For a theory of consciousness, especially one based on Buddhism like Mind-Only school, space-time is “fake” and the law of space-time belongs to Dharmas not Interactive with the Heart (Mind) and are or emergent, therefore, these 4 space-time dimensions cannot be the true dimensions.

Going back to the above number of -1/24, the true dimensions of the universe is therefore 24. This is made up of the 22 Indriyas and the remaining 2 dimensions are the hologram or the 12 Ayatana as shown in the following figure.

Figure 8 True Dimensions of The Universe in 24

-1 of the -1/24 is the -1 in Euler’s identity e i𝜋 = -1. This 24 true dimensions (TD) not only unite the 22 dimensions with the 2-dimension hologram but also with Euler’s identity. In addition, it links all versions of string theory together as in Figure 7 22 True Dimensions.

The main and most crucial part of the universe in Buddhism or Mind-Only school is the 12 Ayatana which is the hologram. It is said that all laws or dharmas arise from this 12 Ayatana. Physicists are catching up now in thinking that information is more fundamental than energy, matter, and even space-time. It is known now the information of the universe resides in the hologram. We also know from holographic principle that the hologram is a two-dimensional surface. This 2D hologram plus the 22 Indriyas makes up 24 dimensions which has to do with the elliptic modular function.

It must be highlighted the that it is these 22 dimensions swiping the 2D hologram which keep the information in the form of Seeds.

9.4 Carry and Return Information

There are two problems when we say the world is a giant hologram and the world is made up of information in the hologram. First problem is information requires energy to carry. Stephen Hawking wrote in Does God play Dice?

Information cannot be carried free, as those of you with phone bills will know. Information requires energy to carry it, and there won't be enough energy left when the black hole disappears.

What all this means is, that information will be lost from our region of the universe, when black holes are formed, and then evaporate. This loss of information will mean that we can predict even less than we thought, on the basis of quantum theory.”

According to the theory of Mind-Only school, it is the 8th Consciousness that holds all the Seeds. There are many types of Seeds for 8th Consciousness as it is also called Ripening Divergently Consciousness, it is the 22 Indriyas which hold the Ripening Divergently Seeds. Ultimately, it is the 22 Indriyas which are holding the Seeds or information in the 12 Ayatana or the hologram. This explains “Information requires energy to carry it”. We also have discussed in Paper V, black hole itself is also a sentient being and black hole has the same “being architecture” like you and me and dogs and ants with the same 8 Consciousness and 5 Skandas architecture. Not only black holes can hold information so can we and that extend to infinite beings.

After knowing how the information is carried, the second problem is how are the information returned? Hawking wrote in the same paper:

“But they have not managed to find any mechanism that would return the information.” He was referring to physicists have not found any way the information in the hologram can be extracted. The mechanism how the information can be returned has been repeated many times and is repeated below:

Figure 9 Mechanism that would return information

The above figure is a repeat of Figure 1 Each sentient being has a full set of the above, but with color lines. Physicists know that information is conserved and the information is stored in the hologram. This is shown as the blue lines. The above view is not from string theory but replicated from Mind-Only school theory.

The biggest problem is how the information is extracted is still not known. In the theory of Mind-Only school all our experiences and the phenomena universe have to arise from the 12 Ayatana, that is shown as the red line. It is also replicated to the section on string theory though that is not the understanding in string theory today.

For Buddhism the latter or the red line is very basic, which is what string theorists or physicists have troubles with. The reason being this is beyond the scope of physics, as it is the scope of consciousness. This is what Von Neumann called “extra-physical factor” or Currivan calls “nonphysical spaces”.

“Schrodinger’s wave function, though, predicts the likely physical manifestation of a system when observed in terms of the underlying probabilities of how it evolves over time, not in the physical realm but in the so-called complex plane. For many mathematical abstractions that happens to be very useful in predicting quantum behavior. But more recently, as we’ll see in further detail later, the complex plane and indeed other nonphysical spaces and dimensions are being ever more recognized as a deeper level of reality from which the physical appearance of our Universe emerges.”

Apparently, Buddhism especially the Mind-Only school is way ahead in understanding “a deeper level of reality from which the physical appearance of our Universe emerges”.

10 Infinities

We have seen a few infinites above. There are infinite dimensions collapsing into 22 dimensions, infinite sentient beings, and sum of infinite whole numbers. String theory predicts or requires 10500 universes. This number can grow to 10272,000 or even infinite. In Mind-Only school, the number of conscious beings is infinite. Infinities seems to be appearing everywhere. The concept of infinities is beyond imagination and being described extensively in the Avatamsaka Sutra, a major source text of Mind-Only school. We have seen in the Indra’s net earlier and we will have more examples here.

10.1 Infinite Worlds in a Particle

There is another concept in the Avatamsaka Sutra, where it is stated that there are infinite number of worlds within one elementary particle(微尘). Is that possible? That is the theory of Mind-Only school. If we go back to the example shared previously in Figure 3 Quantum Fields and the Moon, we mentioned though A has to generate, through his microscopic quantum field, his own photons in order to see the Moon, but this microscopic quantum field is also dependent on the macroscopic quantum field of infinite beings. That’s is the reason even if Einstein or A is not looking at the Moon, the Moon is still there.

Figure 10 Indra's Net - An Elementary Particle

The above is a simplified view of what have been discussed in Indra’s net. In the above figure, though A is said to generate his own photons to see the Moon, but A has to also rely the macroscopic quantum field of the infinite beings. This means everything down to the smallest elementary particles are cocreation of infinite beings through the macroscopic quantum field. Therefore, from the reverse angle, within an elementary particle there is an infinite number of worlds.

10.2 Hilbert Space & Infinite Dimensions

The above description from an ancient text is not very different from the current understanding in quantum mechanics. Hilbert space, which is a generalization of twodimension vector space into infinite dimensions, was developed by David Hilbert in early 20th century. It was immediately used by Erwin Schrodinger and other pioneers of quantum mechanics to describe problems in quantum mechanics. In particular, it is used in the wave functions of the famous Schrodinger’s equation.

It can be said that Hilbert space is where quantum wave functions live, for different systems there will be different sizes, they could be infinite or finite. It is used to mathematically express the amount or pierces of information that is contained in the state of a system. In other words, how much information or how many numbers one need to specify what a system is doing.

It is said to be an abstract mathematical space that has certain amount of information or certain numbers which describe the state of a system and each number correspond to a dimension in that space. Mathematically, a system could have a Hilbert space with infinite dimensions. While the dimensions in Hilbert space could be totally different from the dimensions of string theory which we have discussed so far but we will see that Hilbert spaces are directly related to these extra dimensions.

10.3 Fake Laws & Hilbert Space

It is debated among various schools of Buddhism what are real laws and what are fake laws. Fake laws are emergent laws or properties of a phenomena. Though there are differences among various schools, but the golden standard is that both 12 Ayatana and 5 Skandas are real. We have seen how 12 Ayatana is the most important law as it is where all dharmas or laws arise. 12 Ayatana is the hologram in holographic principles in string theory which have been explained.

Next level of reality or existence is the 5 Skandas11 where 8 Consciousness are the main. These are the 8 extra dimensions in string theory. As mentioned above, string theorists like Gross also realize that superspace and extra dimensions are more real compared to space-time.

Physicists might not like to hear that all that physics are studying are all fake laws belong to a category of Dharmas not Interactive with the Heart (Mind). There are officially 24 items listed in this category which has been shown in Paper IV and is repeated here.

11 5 Skandas are: Consciousness, Mental Formations, Sensations, Perceptions, and Forms.

attainment (1); life-faculty (2); generic similarity (3); dissimilarity (4); the No-thought Samadhi (5); the Samadhi of Extinction (6); the Reward of No- Thought (7); bodies of nouns (8); bodies of sentences (9); bodies of phonemes (10); birth (11); dwelling (12); aging (13); impermanence (14); revolving (15); distinction (16); interaction (17); speed (18); sequence (19); time (20); direction (21); numeration (22); combination (23); and, discontinuity (24).

Notice some psychological states or concepts like birth, dwelling, and aging also belong to this category. These items to theorists of Mind-Only school are nothing more than just “states of a system” based on the collection of active Seeds or strings but are mental. This is not hard to understand with the background explained above.

Physical phenomena are also listed in this category especially starting from number 18 onwards. Similarly they are also various states of a system. These 24 items are by no means exhaustive but listed to provide some ideas or guidance what might fall under this category. Space-time is certainly under this group of laws no matter which school of Buddhism you go to. It is clear that speed and sequence are also listed. Extending from here all attributes or information studied in physics like momentum, position, spin up, spin down, charge, wave length, and so on are all under this category.

This category of law is subsumed under what is called Mental Formations which is the second Skandas after Consciousness. There is a great significance in this as we see in Paper IV, in the brain, this category of law, in the brain, is located in the Prefrontal Lobe where Mental Formations is located in the Frontal Lobe as shown in the following figure in the last row. The following figure has been shown in Paper III, with the terms highlighted in yellow, is repeated here.

Figure 11 Fake Laws and Hilbert Space

Some learned Buddhist scholars explain Dharmas not Interactive with Heart (Mind), shown on the second row, as abstract ideas or abstract concepts. That is similar how the Prefrontal Lobe is being understood. One big problem with brain and neuroscience is that they are based on brain scans without an underlying theory of consciousness. So, when the Prefrontal Lobe is lighted up, brain scientists think that Prefrontal Lobe is “in control” and they call it the executive center. But in reality, it is just the workpad of abstract ideas with the Frontal Lobe in control.

Nature is really beautiful, this workpad of abstract ideas is not only found in Prefrontal Lobe but in physics. It is the Hilbert space which is also an abstract mathematical space. If this is the case, then it would have to be subsumed under gravity or graviton. Is that nonsensical? Herman Verlinda, a string theorist, said:

“…… if you go through more and more details of what happen and shorter and shorter distances you might be interested in saying what is inside our nucleus inside of our atoms and their quarks and smaller and smaller particles and supposed for a moment you want to forget about gravity but you start looking more carefully into what we are made of……you start to discover something new happening……that something new.……you recognize it as gravity……The amazing thing is that you are actually interested in looking at the constituent of matter, without putting gravity in, gravity comes out……”

This indicates that gravity is the main or Type I interaction as in the above figure, and a “Hilbert space” in reality is not merely a mathematical model and it should be subsumed under gravity or graviton. Gravity has been shown to be Mental Formations for planets, stars, nebulae, and black holes which are beings of pure form. This further establishes that gravity is equivalent to Mental Formations, and Hilbert space is Dharmas not Interactive with the Heart (Mind) as shown in the above figure.

In summary, extra dimensions or Consciousness, especially 8th Consciousness, require existence of “Hilbert space” as an abstract mathematical workpad and they do exist somewhere as a workpad for calculation.

10.4 Infinite Beings, Infinite Dimensions, and Infinite Hilbert Spaces

Extending the examples of A and B, now assuming both A and B are physicists in the following figure. Assuming they are now in a lab doing a quantum measurement and trying to determine the state of an electron. Remember that no one being can have any external view, and therefore, no two persons can see a same copy of physical image and this would have to include even all elementary particles like an electron. Today, both physicist A and B think they are measuring the same electron but no, both physicist A and B are simply having their own views of “the same electron” which they think are the same. This is consistent with what have been discussed so far.

As both of them each having their own view of the electron, they then need to have their own separate wave functions or Hilbert spaces as wave functions live in Hilbert spaces as shown in the following figure. The two Hilbert spaces can be extremely similar or even the same but in reality they are two distinct copies. A’s Hilbert space can be said to be affected by B’s quantum field and the quantum fields of infinite beings. Similar can be said of B’s Hilbert space. Therefore, infinite beings have infinite copies of Hilbert spaces

and infinite beings’ cocreated macroscopic quantum field is affecting infinite beings’ Hilbert spaces. The reason above needs to be stated as each Hilbert space is subsumed under the 8th Consciousness. Each being or each universe has a copy of 8th Consciousness or 11th dimension. In order for the individual 8th Consciousness to present the electron or any physical phenomena, then each 8th Consciousness must have their own wave functions and Hilbert space.

Figure

12 Indra's Net - Infinite Hilbert Spaces

In other words, there are infinite 8th Consciousness because there are infinite beings, and each being’s 8th Consciousness is responsible to present individual physical world view, therefore, there need to be infinite copies of Hilbert spaces. This is the core concept of Indra’s net.

Note that it has been shown that Hilbert space is equivalent to the Prefrontal Lobe in the Cerebral Cortex of the brain which each person has one, it is, therefore, not difficult to understand each being has a copy of Hilbert space in its 8th Consciousness.

10.5 Conjugates, Inner Products, and Matrices in Hilbert Space

The examples above can be expanded to A’s view of A’s electron and B’s view of electron and similarly B’s view of B’s electron and A’s electron. It can be even extended to A’s view of B’s and C’s electrons, B’s view of A’s and C’s electrons, and C’s view of B’s and A’s electron and so on. This can get really complicated if more are added but the principles of the example hold. An analysis of A, B, and C and their extension resembles closely, at least figuratively, Hilbert space operations like conjugation, inner products, and matrices. It is telling us there are something happening and if we look at the Hilbert space and the wave functions:

“It’s almost like the universe is allowing all possibilities to exist simultaneously but holds off choosing which actually happened until the last instance. Weider, those different possible paths, those different possible realities interact with each other. That interaction increases the chance that some paths become real and decreases the chance of others. There’s an interaction between possible realities that is seen in the distribution of final positions in the interference pattern. That pattern is real, even though the vast majority of paths involved in producing the interference never attain reality.” This will be an area to explore in future.

10.6 Wigner’s Friends – Infinite of them

Observer’s role in quantum measurement which leads to wave function collapse is still being debated, often furiously, today. One of the hotly debated arguments is Wigner’s friend. According to Eugene Wigner, only a conscious observer can make an observation that collapses the wave function.

“Wigner has written that it “was not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way, without reference to the consciousness [of the observer] . . . the very study of the external world led to the conclusion that the content of the consciousness is the ultimate reality.” There are counter arguments to his thought:

“But if I make an observation, what is to determine which state I am in? This means that someone else has to observe me to collapse my wave function. This is sometimes called “Wigner’s friend.” But it also means that someone has to observe Wigner’s friend, and Wigner’s friend’s friend, and so on. Is there a cosmic consciousness that determines the entire sequence of friends by observing the entire universe?” There has to be infinite number of Wigner’s friends.

“Toward the end of his life, he even became interested in the Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. In this approach, God or some eternal consciousness watches over all of us, collapsing our wave functions so that we can say we are alive. This interpretation yields the same physical results as the Copenhagen interpretation, so this theory cannot be disproven. But the implication is that consciousness is the fundamental entity in the universe, more fundamental than atoms. The material world may come and go, but consciousness remains as the defining element, which means that consciousness, in some sense, creates reality. The very existence of the atoms we see around us is based on our ability to see and touch them."

Wigner had all the right ingredients but unfortunately, he did not go beyond Hinduism. The story of Indra’s net was also in Hinduism. But Mind-Only school uses it

metaphorically rather than literally. Also, Mind-Only school in Buddhism is the only school, not only in ancient India but the world, that gives very precise definitions of Seeds, 12 Ayatana, 5 Skandas, Consciousness, and functions of Consciousness. 10.7 Role of Conscious Observer

It is also argued and said that a conscious observer is not needed to cause a wave function to collapse. Consciousness is much deeper and not what most people think or what science understands today which is extremely limited and myopic. This limited vision is comparable to the old world-view of flatland. As mentioned, Consciousness can be

"physical" and not just mental. It is the 8th Consciousness in Mind-Only school or 11th dimension of M-theory which each of us has one but so deeply hidden we don't notice.

It has been shown the quantum field or fabric of the universe is the cocreation of infinite beings through the interactions of everyone's 8th Consciousness happening in the background without us knowing. This is how Indra's net is explained metaphorically. Every of 8 Consciousness is said to have Visual and Imagine functions. In 8th Consciousness, its Visual function plays the "consciousness observer" and Image function causes the wave functions collapse.

Wave functions are said to collapse once the experiment interact with the external environment, it is the interaction of all these 8th Consciousness that is the “external environment”.

Beings in this case are not just human but also animals, insects, bacteria, planets, stars, nebulae, black holes, and even white holes as shown in Paper V. They are infinite and are all Wigner's friends. Their 8th Consciousness too contribute to the cocreation of quantum field.

It is said in Mind-Only school, our 8th Consciousness would not produce Seeds or phenomena which do not have meaning to us or to our (first) 6 Consciousness. That is the reason why superstring has 6 extra dimensions which in reality are information to our 5 senses and mind consciousness. It has been discussed, in Paper VI, that all our experiences are related to our karmic past which we continuously experience the karma we sow in the form of 6 Consciousness. This explains ”the very existence of the atoms we see around us is based on our ability to see and touch them."

10.8 Summary

We started with discussion or observation of an elementary particle. The very existence of this elementary particle is due to the collapse of wave function quantum mechanically. The collapse of the wave function, which causes the elementary particle to be observed, in turn is caused by Wigner’s friends and Wigner has infinite number of friends. Every physicist sees a different view of a quantum measurement, and it is in the interaction of infinite beings’ collective 8th Consciousness that causes wave function to collapse, therefore, each of their 8th Consciousness has to have a copy of wave function or Hilbert space in order to present the result of a measurement. This is not difficult to understand to see that each person has a copy of the Prefrontal Lobe in the brain.

11 Multiple Worlds Interpretation

Multiple Worlds Interpretation (MWI) was proposed by Hugh Everett to explore an idea about quantum measurement – what if the wave function never collapses? This idea which expands the scope of a quantum system to the entire universe and treats the entire universe as a wave function.

Quantum mechanics is all about waves and wave function collapse when a measurement is made. Before the collapse of a wave function, a particle, for example, is

said to be in superposition which means it can be at multiple locations at the same time. After the collapse of the wave function the particle transits from the quantum world to classical world at a particular location. The idea which Everett was exploring is what if the wave didn’t actually collapse and the wave continues and the particle continues to be in multiple locations. In this case, the wave function is said to continue into another universe and our universe splits into two. One where the wave function collapse has taken place and another where the wave function continues to evolve.

This means that there are multiple copies of you and me and everyone in unthinkable number of universes and experiencing different states of the quantum measurement outcome. While there are supporters of this interpretation, there are also critics.

Figure 13 Multiple World Interpretation

Based on what we have discussed, firstly there isn’t an independent and objective universe that we share and each of us or beings is a universe. Therefore, there are already infinite universes. Second, there are three levels of realities based on Three Natures which means quantum system do transit to the classical world. Lastly, and the most important one is that all phenomena have to go back to and come from the hologram of the universe.

In the following figure, the result of a quantum measurement completed by A is updated to the hologram. In the next fraction of a second B accesses the hologram and is aware of the result. In fact, everyone retrieves the result from the hologram in the next fraction of a second. Notice that A, B, and everyone each is a universe.

12 Conclusion

Before we take a stock check on what we have learnt so far let us see what David Gross a well-known string theorist said in a talk: “when you read in the paper that physicists at CERN have, if they announce they have discovered something which looks like what theorists tell them might be supersymmetry, what they are really discovering is quantum dimensions of space-time. It will be correct to say then – in fact, it would be incorrect not to say that we don’t live in ordinary space-time but we live in superspace. The fact that you are unaware of these

extra-dimensions begs the question – how are you aware of the ordinary dimensions? Space-time, I’ll remind you, is a mental construct. You don’t feel space-time, you don’t see space-time. You have, as an infant, somehow miraculously, while your brain was developing, constructed a model of physical reality that placed it in space and time. But it is only a model constructed by biological us. And we’ve already modified that model quite a lot with relativity: special and general and we might have to modify it with quantum dimensions.”

And now look at what Currivan wrote:

“Study of the even deeper nature of the complex plane, its ability to encode in-formation and what may lie beyond, is at the very leading edge of science. Just as in the early twentieth century the complex plane went from being a mathematical tool to the realization of deeper nonphysical realities, so in the early twenty-first century the probing of other nonphysical “spaces,” such as phase or momentum space, hitherto deemed even more revolutionary discoveries and greater perspectives on the profound nature of reality.

These may well also include discovery of the existence of higher dimensions—either tiny and curled up as proposed by M-theory or large-scale and perhaps incorporating as yet unknown characteristics of light.” It is now clear that the abyss of reality is yet to be explored and the following figure summarizes the generic terms and what these terms mean to string theory and their meaning in Mind-Only school.

The above list is the sturdy of 21st century science through which we will understand more about reality and the quantum fabric.
