The word "universal" here refers to the teachings used collectively to reach all three cultivated levels of sentient beings-- high, intermediate, and low. Cultivated level refers to the accumulation of spiritual achievements from former lives. Thus, enlightenment in Buddhism (through practice of Zen and other traditions) is a process, which may take eons to reach. However, Pureland Buddhism presents a shortcut to finding enlightenment in the Amitabha Buddha’s Pureland, and is the alternative to cultivating reincarnations after reincarnations in this world before gaining enlightenment. With the other method, it is much easier for a cultivator to lose his way once reincarnated to the next life because the desires and temptations of existence are too overwhelming for most individuals to withstand who do not encounter a good knowledgeable advisor in Buddhism.
