It refers to the present major Kalpa, or four-stage cycle of formation, continuance, decline, and disintegration. According to another account, the Wise Kalpa is the name of the Kalpa of continuance in the present major Kalpa. According to the Long Agama Sutra, the last four of the seven Buddhas of the past—Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni, Kashyapa, and Shakyamuni—appeared in the Wise Kalpa. They made their advent respectively when the human Life span was forty thousand years, thirty thousand years, twenty thousand years, and a hundred years. The Wise Kalpa Sutra, translated into Chinese by Dharma-raksha in the late third century, describes the appearance of a thousand Buddhas in the present Wise Kalpa and lists their names. After the above four Buddhas appear, the other 996 Buddhas will make their advent successively, beginning with Maitreya and ending with Ruchika.
