A zayat is a rest house, often beautifully decorated, found in nearly every Burmese village.

The main purpose of these structures is to provide shelter to travelers, as a venue for village gatherings and as a place where people observing the uposatha can spend the day.

Pious people donate money or labor to build zayats as an act of generosity. See Hospitality.
