Teisel pildil poseerib Vello budisti asendis voodil.

Kaks galeriid, neli näitust

Tallinna Kunstisalongis avati keraamik Helle Videviku ning nahakunstnik Ruth Heidoki tarbekunsti ühisnäitus. Helle Videvik töötab Tallinna Kunstifondi kombinaadi "ARS" keraamikaateljees. Näitusel on välja pandud kaheksakümnendatel aastatel valminud dekoratiivplaadid ning suuremõõtmelised keraamilised kompositsioonid. Ühe järgi neist, "Linnulennult", on Helle Videvik andnud oma näitusele nime.

Ruth Heidok tutvustab vaatajatele neljal viimasel aastal valminud raamatuköiteid ning nahkehistöid. Tarbekunstnike ühisnäitus on avatud 28. oktoobrini. "G" Galeriis avati Ellen Polli akvarellide ning Rootsis elava Vello Väärtnõu maalide näitusmüük.

Väljapanek "G" Galeriis on avatud 20. oktoobrini.

Saaremaalt pärit kunstniku näitus

Tallinnas asuvas «G» galeriis on praegu avatud Rootsis elava eesti kunstniku Vello Väärtnõu maalide näitus. Huvitav on märkida, et kunstnik on sündinud 1951. aastal Saaremaal ja 1975. aastast alates elas Tallinnas. Ta on oma maalidega esinenud paljudel näitustel: 1978. aastal Eestis, 1981. a. New Yorgis ja 1982. a. Tokios.

Tal on ülesandeks otsida võimalusi mitmesuguste kaupade hulgimüügiks. Perspektiivikaim tundus talle suhkru pakkumine.

Enamik tollastest õigluse taganõudjatest on poliitikaga tänaseks lõpparve teinud. ERSP MOODUSTAMISE ETTEPANEK

As a Buddhist, Väärtnõu has meditated in monasteries, but for political reasons he has also spent years in prison camps. At present Vello Väärtnõu works as an artist, and the magazine also shows a picture of one of his paintings, which certainly leaves a powerful impression. Vello says that he now uses his time precisely for painting, which he could not do freely in Estonia. In another picture Vello poses in a Buddhist posture on a bed.

Exhibition of an artist from Saaremaa

In the «G» gallery in Tallinn an exhibition of paintings by the Estonian artist Vello Väärtnõu, who lives in Sweden, is now open. It is interesting to note that the artist was born in 1951 on Saaremaa and from 1975 lived in Tallinn. He has shown his paintings at many exhibitions: in 1978 in Estonia, in 1981 in New York and in 1982 in Tokyo. Since 1988 Vello Väärtnõu has lived in the Kingdom of Sweden. He has held exhibitions of his paintings in Stockholm, Munich, Amsterdam and Vaasa.

At the exhibition opened in Tallinn his mature paintings, such as «Rainy Day», «Landscape», «Hell» and others, attract attention. Among the artist's works there are also junipers of Saaremaa. The exhibition stays open until the end of October.

"A man from the street" offers sugar

The week before last, Vello Väärtnõu, representative of the Swedish firm "SJ Konsult", arrived in Tallinn. His task is to look for opportunities for the wholesale of various goods. Offering sugar seemed to him the most promising.

Vello Väärtnõu: "I had 12,500 tonnes of sugar from Brazil to offer at a price of 310 USD a tonne. Counting taxes and the trade margin, this sugar would go on sale in the shops at 5.7 EEK a kilo. As such a large quantity was too much for individual firms, I went with my proposal to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Eiki Zernask. He sent me on to the joint-stock company "ABT" (the former grocery wholesale base). The director general of "ABT", Aleksander Bachmann, listened to my proposal and declared that our price was too high. Although the shops in Tallinn ask 8 to 10 kroons a kilo for sugar, we were willing to lower our price. Thereupon Bachmann let me understand that I was "a man from the street" and he would not trade with me. When asked how I could still get an answer to my offer, Bachmann advised me to make a written proposal by fax (they are said to be obliged to answer those). That is what I did, but I still got no answer. Seeing that "ABT" was not interested in us, I began to look for interested parties elsewhere. It turned out that sugar was wanted almost everywhere. Wholesale buyers in Rakvere are willing to take 100 tonnes, Viljandi and Jõgeva 20 tonnes, Valga 15 tonnes, Lihula 10 tonnes. There were others who wanted it too, but it is still not possible to share out the whole 12,500 tonnes, and it is not profitable to bring a smaller quantity to Tallinn by ship."

Vello Väärtnõu goes on looking for buyers and hopes that he will find them in the end. Yet in many food shops in the capital there has been no sugar on sale at all since the currency reform, and where there is, it is at a considerably higher price than Väärtnõu offers.

The rebels of Hirvepark ten years later

At the UpArt Gallery on Toompea, Kohtu 12, people gathered who in 1987 found in themselves so much rebelliousness and courage that they came to the meeting in Hirvepark. Or who were connected with the illegal political activity before it, or the equally illegal activity after it. Or both at once. Most of those who demanded justice then have by now settled their accounts with politics. Some are utterly disappointed in politics and in the long-awaited republic. At the UpArt gallery, however, one sees what fits under the concept and exhibition "Artists of Hirvepark". Henno Arrak, Karl Hans Arrak, Merle Jääger, Sirje Kalvik, Anniki Kari, Rene Kari, Mati Kiirend, Uno Laur, Helgi Lilleste, Eve Pärnaste, Iris Uuk and Vello Väärtnõu show their art. If nothing else, it is certainly an interesting meeting of art and politics. [...]

The exhibition was also reported in Sõnumileht on 23 August 1997 and in Eesti Päevaleht (Stockholm) on 11 September 1997, page 5, by Rita Paomees-Ahonen.

From Viktor Niitsoo's study "The Estonian Group for the Disclosure of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its activity in 1987 and 1988" (part 4), the whole section on the ERSP proposal.

THE PROPOSAL TO FORM THE ERSP

On 21 January Vello Väärtnõu, Eke-Pärt Nõmm, Arvi Orula, Eve Pärnaste, Heiki Ahonen, Erik Udam, Urmas Inno, Karin Inno, Endel Ratas, Mati Kiirend, Kalju Mätik, Rein Arjukese, Mati Vilu and Arvo Pesti sent to the mass media and the Council of Ministers a proposal to found the Estonian National Independence Party, which would defend "the interests of the Estonian people in the present state situation and would be a national opposition group to the Communist Party of Estonia". The proposal contained 31 programme theses from all fields of life (restoring historical truth, protection of the native nation, ecology, economy, human rights, culture, health care, the army, legislation, foreign policy), which were called national minimum demands. It was proposed to declare 24 February, the anniversary of the proclamation of the independent Republic of Estonia, a public holiday. All who were concerned about the fate of Estonia and the Estonian people and who felt an inner duty to further Estonian life were called to join the proposal. (MRP-AEG... 1988/10)

On 30 January a press conference took place in a private flat in Moscow, where Väärtnõu, Orula and Nõmm presented the proposal to found the ERSP to foreign correspondents accredited in Moscow. (MRP-AEG... 1988/10)

The press of the Estonian SSR reacted to the proposal through the pen of the journalist Margus Mets in the traditionally coarse style: "To put it plainly, they have appropriated the thoughts of dozens of journalists, scholars and public figures, torn them out of context and tied them together with principles alien to socialist development." (Rahva Hääl, 21 February 1988.) For Mets, writing the article scolding the initiators of the ERSP proposal was a "journeyman's piece", for quite soon he was promoted to editor-in-chief of Noorte Hääl. By the same method Mart Kadastik in his time became editor-in-chief of Edasi (see "Interview with Lagle Parek", Laar, Ott, Endre 1996b: 265).

The ERSP proposal was a turning point in the history of the resistance movement. It was an attempt to create the first openly operating political party both in occupied Estonia and in the Soviet Union. The need for political organisation was also brought about by the one-sidedness of the MRP-AEG's activity: the group offered no programme or plan of action. In addition, the flood of IME topics (the plan for an economically self-managing Estonia) in the mass media had successfully diverted the attention of the Estonian people from the problems that the Hirvepark meeting had brought before the public. That is why the ERSP proposal was a clear message that there is a real alternative to "sovereignty within the USSR".

Unfortunately, the whole initiative was darkened by the fact that the initiators of the ERSP proposal, the artist Väärtnõu and his friends Nõmm and Orula, did not act here from entirely unselfish motives. In 1982 Väärtnõu had been caught together with Tarmo Urb in Karelia near the Finnish border. Accused of an attempt to flee abroad, Väärtnõu spent six months in the psychiatric department of Patarei prison. In the autumn of 1987 he had applied in vain for permission to go to India to study Buddhism. Since Nõmm and Orula, as well as Väärtnõu, wished to emigrate, everything connected with the founding of the party left a doubtful impression. For this reason, for example, J. Adams, L. Parek and V. Niitsoo stayed out of the undertaking. To run ahead, let it be said that the calculation of Väärtnõu and his companions came off 100 per cent. By March 1988 all three had left Estonia. With that, their role in politics also came to an end. The result of the emigration of the initiators was that the forming of the ERSP stalled. A new beginning came in April 1988, when the Organising Committee of the ERSP met, now headed by other people.
