Traallaevastik täienes

Nõukogude valitsus loob kalureile kõik võimalused viienda viisaastaku plaani edukaks täitmiseks uue püügitehnika suunamisega kalurikolhooside kasutusse. Neil päevil täienes Kingissepa mootor-kalapüügijaama kalapüügilaevastik jällegi ühe traallaeva võrra. Uus traallaev STB-7160, mida juhib kapten Aksel Alas ja kus traalmeistrina töötab Arseeni Väärtnõu, sõitis nüüd püügile.

Riia lahe avarustel

Rajooni kalurikolhooside kasutusse antud traallaevad alustasid Riia lahes intensiivset püüki. Traallaev STB 7125 (kapten Väärtnõu) täitis juba k. a. I kvartalis aastaplaanist ligi 30 protsenti.

Rasketes ilmastikutingimustes püüavad praegu kala meie rajooni traallaevad. Mõlemad traalerid on täitnud kvartaliülesandest ligi 90 protsenti. Balti merest püüdvatest traaleritest on parem STB-7160 (kapten Alas), kellel on ülesandest täidetud ligi 50 protsenti. Püük jätkub. Pole kahtlust, et traallaevastik täidab I kvartali püügiülesande ennetähtaegselt.

«Salme Kaluri» kolhoosi üleskutsele järgnedes

SÕRVELASTE KOHUSTUSED

„Sõrve Kaluri“ kolhoosis on k. a. I kvartali püügiülesanded paremini täitnud hülgepüügigrupp, kelle vastav näitaja küünib 105 protsendini.

III lüli (lülivanem V. Lind) kutsus võistlusse I lüli (M. Oeselg), kohustudes plaani täitma poolteisekordselt. Särjepüügiüksus aga sõlmis võistluslepingu hülgepüügigrupiga. Nende arvates ei tee raskusi püügiülesande täitmine 250-protsendiliselt. Ka kolhoosi kõige vanem kalur Laas Münt otsustas noorematega sammu pidada.

Kõrvuti püügiülesannete täitmisega otsustasid kalurid suurpüüniste remondi lõpule viia hiljemalt 15. veebruariks.

MEHED MERETUULTES

G. Jisop

Soome lahe põhjarannik. Tiheda männimetsaga kaetud kaldal asub Maksim Gorki nimeline kalurikolhoos ja Vergi sadam. Juba kaugelt paistab tihe mastide mets kai ääres.

...Varane hommik, puhub 3-4-palline SW tuul. Taevas on kaetud ühtlase tumehalli pilvitusega. Ehkki on alles videvik, käib püügilaevadel juba kiire askeldamine: masinamehed käivitavad mootoreid ja tekimeeskond seab valmis traalnootasid. Päästetakse lahti kinnitusotsad ja üksteise järel eemalduvad traallaevad sadamast. Ka STB-7204 võtab kursi avamerele. Ühetoonilise mürinaga töötab diiselmootor ja sujuvalt kord tõustes kord vajudes lõikab laeva vöörtääv Soome lahe tinahalle laineid. Ahtri taga kaob hämarusse mustendav kaldaviirg, millest eraldub vaid kaks plinkivat majakatuld, mis asuvad täpselt üksteise all. Need on meremeeste teejuhid öises pimeduses.

Traal on sees.

Kuna traalnoota vedav laev peab ise hästi kurssi, kinnitab kapten rooli vastavate stopperitega. Neid on silmapiiril juba kümmekond.

LÕUNATUND

Vahepeal on laeva vööris asuvast kambüüsi korstnast hakanud tõusma tihedaid suitsupilvi. Tänane kokk, kelleks on seekord kapteni abi Marokin, on asunud lõunat valmistama.

Undamisega hakkab see tööle, keerates poolidele terasvaiereid.

Kuna laev asub külglaines, on vaja töötada ettevaatlikult, muidu võib koos noodaga üle parda kukkuda.

Meie lähedusse on ilmunud traallaev, vilgutades fokkmastis asetsevat signaaltuld.

Raske on meremehe elu, ent töö eest saadakse vääriline tasu - k. a. kahe kuuga ulatub see igal meeskonnaliikmel ligi kümne tuhande rublani.

„Sõrve” hakkab kündma maailma meresid

Mitmesuguste tunnetega on käidud Sõrve teedel.

See on äsja vette lastud tuliuue Eesti Riikliku Merelaevanduse mootorlaeva «Sõrve» kapteni esimene abi Leopold Kokk, kes tuli «Sõrve Kaluri» kolhoosi rahvaga sõprussidemeid looma.

Lülle külas on II põllundusbrigaadi rahvas virgalt rehte peksmas. Kui sm. Kokk laeva tutvustamisel jõuab sõnadeni, et esimene reis tehakse Aafrikasse, naised ahhetavad.

«Mida sealt tuuakse?» uudishimutsetakse.

«Punast puud, teemanti, rauamaaki. Meilt viiakse sinna veomasinaid ja tööstuse sisseseadeid.»

«Sõrve» on Saksa Demokraatlikus Vabariigis ehitatud kaasaegne moodne laev. Võtab peale 4000 tonni laadungit ja sõidab kiirusega 16 sõlme. Meeskond - 37 inimest - koosneb eestlastest ja vennasvabariikide meremeestest. Kolhoosnikud on vaimustatud.

«Miks talle niisuguse halva koha nimi pandi?» pärib keegi naistest ja lisab oma mõtte selgituseks: «Eks Sõrve olnud kodanlikul ajal ainult suiliste ja suluste maa. Terve mandri talude töö tegime ära, aga naerdi meid ikkagi ega sõrulasi inimesteks peetud.»

Kuid sm. Kokk on vastupidisel arvamusel.

Torgu 8-klassilises Koolis, kuhu edasine tee viib, on sm.

Viimased kolm aastat on kolhoos kalapüügiplaanid täitnud. Praegu on traallaevadest esikohal STB-7125 (kapten Arseeni Väärtnõu), kus III kvartali plaan täideti 175,6-protsendiliselt. Kaldapüügi kaluri keskmine teenistus aastas on kasvanud 1958. aastaga võrreldes 300 rubla võrra.

Kolhoos on üks suuremaid vabariigis, omades 8000 hektarit maad. Viimaste aastate jooksul on kolhoosnikud ehitanud 17 uut individuaalelamut. Kolhoosi poolt ehitati neljakorteriline elamu karjatalitajate perekondadele, kalurite soemaja, kolm lehmalauta, kolm sigalat, kaks kanalat, üks tibula, kooli internaat, peaaegu valmis on vasikalaut ja käsil teine.

Kolhoosnikud tundsid suurt huvi noorte Aafrika riikide vastu.

«Mida ma annan edasi mootorlaeva «Sõrve» meeskonnale teie nimel?» küsisin.

«Kolhoosnikute palavad tervitused,» vastati mulle.

Saarlased avaldasid soovi organiseerida sotsialistlikku võistlust meremeestega. Nad ütlesid, et sõidavad kindlasti külla laevale, vaatavad, kuidas meremehed elavad.

ELU JA PERSPEKTIIVID

Parteikomitees nimetati mulle, et lähemas tulevikus toimub kolhoosis «Sõrve Kalur» reorganiseerimine. Elu nõuab tootmise laia spetsialiseerimist. On otsustatud muuta «Sõrve Kalur» täielikult kalurikolhoosiks. Põllutööbrigaadide baasil aga moodustada sovhoos.

Kolhoosi esimees Endel Ling, keda viimaks kohtasime kolhoosi juhatuses, jutustas kolhoosi kalurite edusammudest. Praegu kuulub artelli laevastikku neli STB traallaeva ja mootorpaadid rannaäärseks püügiks. Juba kolme aasta kestel on kalurid ületanud kalapüügi plaane. Tänavu peavad nad andma riigile 8050 tsentnerit kala. Eesrindlikud meeskonnad täidavad edukalt ülesannet. Ees on praegu traallaeva STB 7125 meeskond, kus kapteniks on Arseni Väärtnõu. Ka teised püüavad mitte maha jääda.

The final part of L. Kokk's series in the Russian-language Estonsky Moryak, the Russian sister paper of Eesti Meremees (earlier parts on 27 and 31 October and 3 November 1962). Its opening paragraphs are the same as the end of the Estonian part 3 above; the final part is given in full, in Russian.

Suure pere plaanid

Vanade mootorpaatide asemele muretsetakse kolm uut. Eakad kalurid saavad endale veel ühe õnge- ja võrgupüügipaadi (seega on neid kolhoosis nüüd kolm).

Kolhoosi kalurid koondatakse 1. jaanuarist ühte brigaadi, keda hakkab juhtima Mart (Peetri p.) Oeselg. «Varuli-Ranna», «Kaljuranna» ja «Salme Kaluri» kolhoosi jäävad samuti brigaadid.

Kõige intensiivsem ettevalmistus suurpüügiks käib praegu Oeselja brigaadis. Juba neli aastat on Eduard Sepp suvel kalu püüdnud, aga talvel teinud kõik brigaadile vajalikud püünised. Valmis on juba 16 angerjamõrra keret ning neljale räimemõrrale on tehtud 20 tiivajärku. Küsitav on, kas Eduard Sepa töövili kevadel kahele autokoormale ära mahubki!

Lõpuks veel mõni sõna traalimeestest. Aastaplaani on täitnud STB-7238 (kapten Aleksei Tšistov). Mõnevõrra kehvemad on STB-7115 (kapten Väino Niinemets) püügitulemused.

Praegu on esimesed teistest ainult 4 tonniga ees. Üldse on traallaevad jaanuaris välja püüdnud 70 tonni kala.

Kaldapüügi kalureist on parimad Varuli brigaadi mehed (brigadir Arnold Tamm), kes on ostupunkti andnud 240 kg haugi ja ahvenat.

Julge pealehakkamine on pool võitu - see kehtib «Ranna» kolhoosi I brigaadi kalurite vendade August ja Juhan Ausi kohta. Jaanuari alguses, kui meres oli juba jääd, käisid nad sellest hoolimata väljas ja said ääremõrdadega hulga ahvenaid ja täitsid oma I kvartali plaani 186-protsendiliselt.

Teistel kaluritel on plaani - 143 kg mehe peale - täitmisega nüüd raskusi.

Valitsus eraldas metsamajandile summad tammi ehitamiseks, aga Orissaare teemeistri sm. Kuumi juhtimisel ehitati tamm valmis. Laht on eraldatud merest.

Meie intervjuu

Kas te olete valmis?

Metsa alt põgeneb lumi, merelt käriseb jääkate, rannas kiljuvad kajakad. «Sõrve Kaluri» kolhoosi juhatuse liikmed ja kommunistid tulevad järjekordselt kokku, et arutada suurpüügiks ettevalmistamist. Palume kolhoosi aseesimeest sm. Põldu enne koosoleku algust vastata mõnele küsimusele.

Kas I kvartal täitis lootusi?

Ilm oli tänavu talvel väga halb. Muudkui tuul tuule peale.

Madala vee korral on kaluritel alati olnud raskusi paatidega ostupunkti juurde pääsemiseks.

«Siin on tore ujuda küll,» kiidab T. Tuuling.

1960. a. ulatus see uudis ka TRÜ Kehakultuuriteaduskonna viimase kursuse üliõpilase, mitmekordse vabariigi liblikujumise meistri Toomas Tuulingu kõrvu.

Nüüd leiamegi koondise kandidaatide nimistust juba üheksa saarlast, nende treener on endiselt tulvil tööindu, kuid...

V. AIN

Sageli on kaluritele esimesteks abimeesteks olnud meie piirivalvurid.

Vana aasta lõpul jäid merehätta Muhu kalurid Arseeni Väärtnõu, Heino Väärtnõu ja Esper Schmuul. Nad tulid kolhoosile ostetud traallaevaga Kaliningradist.

Niisiis on lõpule jõudnud meie rajooni suurim spordiüritus käesoleval aastal - Saaremaa Suure Tõllu I spordimängud. [...]

The Trawler Fleet Has Grown

The Soviet government gives the fishermen every possibility to fulfil the plan of the fifth five-year plan successfully by placing new fishing technology at the disposal of the fishing collective farms. In these days the fishing fleet of the Kingissepa motor fishing station has again grown by one trawler. The new trawler STB-7160, commanded by Captain Aksel Alas and with Arseeni Väärtnõu working as trawl master, has now gone out fishing.

On the Expanses of the Gulf of Riga

The trawlers given to the fishing collective farms of the district have begun intensive fishing in the Gulf of Riga. The trawler STB 7125 (Captain Väärtnõu) already fulfilled almost 30 per cent of its annual plan in the first quarter of this year. It is followed by the trawlers STB 7160, 7119 and 7204, whose catches in the last five-day period were almost equal, each catching more than a tonne of Baltic herring a day.

The trawler fleet will celebrate the working people's festival by fishing on the open sea. This is the fishermen's gift to the homeland and the people.

The Trawlers STB-7204 and STB-7125 Lead the Competition

The trawlers of our district are now fishing in difficult weather conditions. Although drift ice and fog often bring unpleasant moments, this does not discourage the fishermen. Having joined the pre-election competition, every ship's crew does everything to fulfil the pledges it has made. So far the best results have been achieved by the crew of the trawler STB-7204 of the "Kodurand" collective farm (Captain Vaher) and the trawler STB-7125 of the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm (Captain Väärtnõu), which are fishing in the Gulf of Finland. Both trawlers have fulfilled almost 90 per cent of the quarter's task. Of the trawlers fishing in the Baltic Sea, STB-7160 (Captain Alas) is the best, having fulfilled almost 50 per cent of its task. Fishing goes on. There is no doubt that the trawler fleet will fulfil the first-quarter fishing task ahead of time.

Following the Call of the "Salme Kalur" Collective Farm

THE PLEDGES OF THE SÕRVE PEOPLE

In the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm the first-quarter fishing tasks of this year have been best fulfilled by the seal-hunting group, whose figure reaches 105 per cent. The roach-fishing unit of the 2nd link (link leader Eduard Keidong), fishing at Mõntu, has also fulfilled its quarterly task. In fishing with fish traps the leaders are the fishermen Hindrek Pits, Laas Münt, Aleksander Ramst, Leopold and Mart Oeselg, Arnold Aus and others. At present they are delivering fish above the quarterly plan. For the collective farm as a whole, however, more than 80 per cent of the task has been fulfilled. Trawl fishing is successful too. The trawler STB-7125 (Captain Väärtnõu) recently reported the fulfilment of its quarterly plan.

Inspired by the call of the fishermen of the "Salme Kalur" collective farm for socialist competition, and by the decision of the district fishermen's activists' day, which was recently discussed in the brigades, the fishermen of the 1st brigade made a number of pledges at their last production meeting. So it was decided to fulfil the quarterly plan by 130 per cent in honour of the day of the elections to the local Soviets of working people's deputies. The 3rd link (link leader V. Lind) challenged the 1st link (M. Oeselg) to competition, pledging to fulfil its plan one and a half times over. The roach-fishing unit made a competition agreement with the seal-hunting group. In their opinion it will not be difficult to fulfil the fishing task by 250 per cent. The oldest fisherman of the collective farm, Laas Münt, also decided to keep step with the younger men.

Alongside the fulfilment of the fishing tasks, the fishermen decided to finish the repair of the large fishing gear by 15 February at the latest.

MEN IN THE SEA WINDS

G. Jisop

The northern coast of the Gulf of Finland. On the shore, covered with dense pine forest, lie the Maxim Gorky fishing collective farm and Vergi harbour. Already from afar a dense forest of masts can be seen along the quay. Here the trawlers of Muhu, Pärnu, Hiiumaa, Kingissepa and also Leningrad are at their winter trawl fishing. Of the trawlers of the Kingissepa motor fishing station, those fishing here are the trawler STB-7204 of the "Kodurand" fishing collective farm (Captain Vaher), the trawler STB-7125 of "Sõrve Kalur" (Captain Väärtnõu) and the trawler STB-7291 of "Varuli-Rand" (Captain Makarov). Below we tell briefly what an ordinary working day of our brave seamen-fishermen looks like on the winter Gulf of Finland.

SAILING TO THE FISHING GROUND

...An early morning, a south-west wind of force 3 to 4 is blowing. The sky is covered with an even dark grey cloud. Although it is still twilight, there is already a busy bustle on the fishing ships: the engine men are starting the engines and the deck crew is getting the trawl nets ready. The mooring lines are cast off and one after another the trawlers move away from the harbour. STB-7204 also sets course for the open sea. The diesel engine works with a monotonous rumble, and rising and falling smoothly the ship's stem cuts the lead-grey waves of the Gulf of Finland. Behind the stern the dark line of the shore disappears into the dusk, and from it only two blinking beacon lights stand out, one exactly above the other. These are the seamen's guides in the darkness of the night.

In the wheelhouse the captain bends over the chart, marking the ship's course and the fishing ground we intend to head for. A glance at the clock confirms that about twenty minutes are left before we reach the fishing ground. There are four of us in the wheelhouse: the captain, the mate Aleksander Marokin, the mechanic Heino Väli and I (the motorman Johannes Laurits is in the engine room). We exchange opinions and guesses about today's fishing ground and the likely catch. Captain Feliks Vaher is a seaman with a rich store of practical experience in trawl fishing, but the other members of the crew are also skilled fishermen whose words and opinions must be taken seriously. That is why it is always decided together where to put the net in. To determine where the shoals of fish are, attention is paid to the air temperature, the direction and strength of the wind and the depth of the water.

THE NET GOES IN

In conversation the time passes quickly and we have already reached the fishing ground. Near us several trawlers begin to put their nets in. On our ship too everything is ready. The captain "takes the way off" and turns the ship with its starboard, that is, its right side, to the wind. The ship lies in the beam sea and the captain puts the gear lever to "stop". The mate Aleksander Marokin takes the cod end of the net in his arms and throws it over the side. The whole trawl net follows, and only the glass floats are left bobbing on the surface. The captain gives way ahead and puts the rudder to port, and the ship begins to circle.

When the bow has turned to the planned course, the captain gives full speed and the order to the mechanic Heino Väli and the motorman Johannes Laurits, who are waiting ready at the trawl winch, "that the otter boards and the warps may be let go". Väli and Laurits at once release the stoppers of the winch drums, and the warps begin to run into the water from both drums. So that the trawl net runs correctly behind the ship, both warps are exactly measured and marked. The mechanic raises his hand as a sign that the warps have been let out to the required length, and the captain, who watches attentively from the wheelhouse all the time, slows the ship for a moment. The stoppers are screwed tight and both trawl warps are drawn together with a chain at the stern, and the captain again gives the ship full speed. The trawl is in. Now the captain leaves the wheelhouse and checks "the run of the net" himself. Satisfied that everything is in order, he goes back into the wheelhouse and enters the time of setting the trawl in the ship's log.

Since a ship towing a trawl net keeps its course well by itself, the captain fixes the rudder with the stoppers. Now there is time for a smoke and to watch the other ships. There are already about ten of them on the horizon.

THE LUNCH HOUR

Meanwhile thick clouds of smoke have begun to rise from the galley chimney in the bow. Today's cook, who this time is the mate Marokin, has started to make lunch. Soon he comes to call us to eat.

We go down into the crew's cabin, where an appetising smell of soup meets us as soon as the door is opened. Since our stomachs have become quite empty and the damp cold has got under our clothes, the warm soup tastes especially good and gives a pleasant feeling. But one has to handle the soup plate skilfully, because the floor under our feet is none too steady, and when the ship meets a bigger wave a plateful of soup can easily end up in one's lap instead of one's stomach.

THE HAUL COMES TO LIGHT

The clock shows that only a few minutes are left before hauling the net. The captain presses the button that rings the electric bell in the crew's quarters. The mechanic and the motorman take their places at the trawl winch. The captain stops the engine; at the same time the men release the band brakes of the winch drums and the mechanic starts the trawl winch. With a hum it begins to work, winding the steel warps onto the drums.

The captain reduces the engine speed. Already the stern otter board rises out of the water, and a little later the bow one too. The mechanic stops the trawl winch, and the mate and the motorman free the otter boards from the warps and then fasten them to the trawl hooks. Everything is in order and the mechanic starts the winch again. The last metres of warp, and already the spreader poles at the end of each wing of the net and the upper rope with the glass floats rise out of the water. Now the mechanic stops the trawl winch, and then we all together begin to pull the wet, heavy net on board by hand. Since the ship lies in the beam sea, one has to work carefully, or one may fall overboard together with the net. Who knows where a whole flock of seagulls has suddenly come from over our ship; with loud cries they land on the water over the net and snatch little fish from it into their beaks. On the crest of a wave the cod end rises with thousands of wriggling little fish. Our minds, which have been anxious all the time waiting for the catch, calm down at once, and our mood becomes cheerful. For it often happens that after many hours of trawling you pull an almost empty net out of the sea, with not even enough fish in it for a meal. "Well, about ten boxes this haul should give," the mechanic reckons, and we all agree with him. The mate fastens a sling round the cod end, and with the help of the boom we hoist the catch onto the deck, which is at once covered with a layer of wriggling little fish.

We put the net in again, and then there is time to shovel the fish into boxes. It turns out that this haul gave us 14 boxes, that is, about 400 kg of Baltic herring and sprats.

A trawler has appeared near us, blinking the signal light on its foremast. It turns out that this is the trawler STB-7125 of the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm, which was fishing near us and is now reporting the size of its catch by the number of boxes. The light goes on and off 12 times, which means 12 boxes! We report our own catch in the same way.

We make two more hauls, and since the wind is getting ever stronger and the waves are already so high that trawling becomes impossible, we head for the harbour. All the other trawlers have already finished work too. When the fish is handed over in the harbour, it turns out that today's catch is nearly 1000 kg of fish.

EVENING IN THE HARBOUR

But with that the working day of our brave seamen-fishermen is not over yet. The captain and his mate begin to mend the trawl net, while the engine men bring the fish boxes on board and later find work in the engine room. Only when it gets dark and the harbour lights up does one of the many fishing days end. How much that is ordinary and everyday it contains, and yet how much persistence, purposefulness and love of work!

Tired and chilled, but in good spirits after a successful day's fishing, the men come into the cabin. Now first of all to wash, then the stomach demands its share. When these things are done, the radio is switched on, and already the mate of the neighbouring ship, Herman Must, and the mechanic Loonurm come into the cabin to exchange thoughts about today's fishing trip together and to make plans for tomorrow. Aleksander Marokin takes a book and begins to read, and soon the others follow his example. But the dearest friend of Arseeni Väärtnõu, captain of STB-7125, in his hours of rest is the mandolin. Soon it will be Saturday; then a trip to the sauna is planned, and after that a film show at the community hall. So our brave seamen-fishermen live and work day after day.

The trawlers STB-7204 and STB-7125 firmly hold the first places in the competition of our trawlers. Both have fulfilled the quarter's fishing task by almost 250 per cent, and one can be sure that by the day of the elections to the local Soviets of working people's deputies of the Estonian SSR the fishing task will be exceeded threefold. The seaman's life is hard, but the work is rewarded fittingly: in the two months of this year it amounts to almost ten thousand roubles for each member of the crew.

"Sõrve" Will Plough the Seas of the World

The roads of Sõrve have been travelled with many kinds of feelings. Women driven to Germany like a herd of cattle went along them, with weeping little ones by the hand, casting despairing glances at the receding pines of home. A swarthy soldier-victor with strong cheekbones came through the smoke of Sääre village, tenderly helping a fair-haired wounded comrade. Long lines of prisoners of war trailed along, with "Gott mit uns" gleaming on their belt buckles.

The war ended, and cheerful wheels began to roll on the roads: building materials and new fishing gear were brought, and radios and sofas. And the village lanes rang with the roar of motorcycles and tractors.

Many guests have been to Sõrve, but one like the man who came today has never been seen before. The man looks out of the car window with curiosity. Now and then he has the car stop and photographs the war cemetery, the lighthouse, a post windmill or the stones by the sea, which look snow-white in the October sun.

This is Leopold Kokk, first mate of the brand-new motor ship "Sõrve" of the Estonian State Shipping Company, just launched, who has come to make bonds of friendship with the people of the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm. Now he wishes to get to know his future friends and competitors and their home district thoroughly.

In Lülle village the people of the 2nd farming brigade are busily threshing. When comrade Kokk, introducing the ship, comes to the words that the first voyage will be to Africa, the women gasp.

"What will be brought from there?" they ask with curiosity.

"Redwood, diamonds, iron ore. From us lorries and industrial equipment are taken there."

The "Sõrve" is a modern ship built in the German Democratic Republic. She takes 4000 tonnes of cargo and sails at a speed of 16 knots. The crew of 37 people consists of Estonians and seamen from the fraternal republics. The collective farmers are delighted.

"Why was she given the name of such a poor place?" one of the women asks, and adds to explain her thought: "In bourgeois times Sõrve was only the land of the bran-eaters and the porridge-slurpers. We did the work of whole mainland farms, but still we were laughed at and the Sõrve people were not thought of as human beings."

But comrade Kokk is of the opposite opinion. The industriousness of the Sõrve people is now known in the whole Soviet Union.

"A good voyage, and look after your ship well!" Viima Lütt wishes on behalf of the brigade.

At the Torgu 8-year school, where the road leads next, comrade Kokk's visit is a great event. The fathers and brothers of many pupils are fishermen or trawlermen, but to see a real seaman with gold braid, who has even been to Africa, is not an everyday thing. When comrade Kokk tells how a little black boy asked him for a badge with Gagarin's picture and kissed it reverently before pinning it on, a real storm of applause breaks out. Silvi Kokk, chairman of the council of the Pioneer troop, gives the seaman a Pioneer neckerchief and badge, asking him to pass them on to the Pioneers of Guinea. The thought that the neckerchief they sent will be admired by curly-haired black boys and girls, whom they may meet in person when they grow up, at a youth festival or on a voyage to Africa, is so inspiring that in the evening the foreign-language or geography textbook is taken up with much deeper interest.

In the office of the collective farm, with the help of the chairman Endel Ling, half the pages of the seaman's notebook fill with figures and indicators. We give some of them. For the last three years the collective farm has fulfilled its fishing plans. This year's weather did destroy many eel traps and nets, but with the help of four trawlers it is hoped that this year's annual plan will be met too. At present first place among the trawlers belongs to STB-7125 (Captain Arseeni Väärtnõu), where the third-quarter plan was fulfilled by 175.6 per cent. The average yearly earnings of a coastal fisherman have grown by 300 roubles compared with 1958.

The collective farm is one of the largest in the republic, with 8000 hectares of land. Every year 100 ha of new land are brought under cultivation. Although the grain suffered from the weather, the potato harvest is expected to be 170 centners per hectare. Peas, sugar beet and maize grew well. In recent years the collective farmers have built 17 new private houses. The collective farm built a four-flat house for the families of the cattle-keepers, a warming house for the fishermen, three cowsheds, three piggeries, two henhouses, a chick house and a school boarding house; a calf shed is almost ready and another is under way. So much machinery has been received that one cannot count it all at once: 10 lorries, 10 tractors, 3 mineral fertiliser spreaders, 3 grain drills, an electric welding unit, a combine harvester and much more.

It is agreed that the collective farmers and the seamen will compete with each other in fulfilling their work tasks, in amateur art and in study. And when the ship comes back to Tallinn from her voyage to Africa, the people of the collective farm will go to visit the seamen.

A good voyage, "Sõrve"!

Sõrve

3

L. KOKK, mate

Everyone listened attentively to the account of the new motor ship "Sõrve". I also told them that I had already been to Africa with the motor ship "Mahtra". The collective farmers took a great interest in the young African states.

"What shall I pass on to the crew of the motor ship 'Sõrve' in your name?" I asked.

"The warm greetings of the collective farmers," they answered.

The old woman collective farmer Viiu Saav said with emotion:

"Tell the seamen of the 'Sõrve' in our name to look after their new motor ship and to work conscientiously. We too try to work so that all our people may live even better."

...All the collective farmers we talked with in Sõrve asked us to pass on to the seamen their greetings and their wishes to work well. All were glad that bonds of friendship are developing between the namesakes, the cargo ship and the seamen and collective farmers of the peninsula. The islanders expressed the wish to organise socialist competition with the seamen. They said that they would certainly come to visit the ship and see how the seamen live.

LIFE AND PROSPECTS

At the party committee I was told that in the near future the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm will be reorganised. Life demands broad specialisation of production. It has been decided to turn "Sõrve Kalur" entirely into a fishing collective farm, and to form a state farm on the basis of the farming brigades.

The chairman of the collective farm, Endel Ling, whom we finally met at the board of the collective farm, told us about the successes of the farm's fishermen. At present the fleet of the artel has four STB trawlers and motor boats for coastal fishing. For three years already the fishermen have exceeded their fishing plans. This year they must give the state 8,050 centners of fish. The leading crews are carrying out the task successfully. In front at present is the crew of the trawler STB 7125, whose captain is Arseni Väärtnõu. The others too are trying not to fall behind.

The final part of L. Kokk's series, in the Russian-language Estonsky Moryak.

SÕRVE - the Peninsula and the Motor Ship

The chairman of the collective farm, Endel Ling, whom we finally found at the board office, told us about the successes of the collective's fishermen. At present the artel's fleet consists of four STB trawlers and motorboats for inshore fishing. For three years now the fishermen have exceeded all their planned catch targets. This year they must deliver 8,050 centners of fish to the state. The leading crews are coping well with the task. In the lead at present is the crew of the trawler STB 7125, whose captain is Arseni Väärtnõu. The others are also trying not to fall behind.

For his selfless work one of the oldest fishermen of the artel, Mart Petrovich Oeselg, who took part in the battles for Sõrve, was recently awarded the Order of Lenin.

We asked about the collective farmers' incomes and the living conditions of their families.

"Just ask him," answered the chairman, pointing to a tall elderly fisherman, "how much he earns and how much his wife brings home."

Eduard Keidong, the man the chairman had pointed to, began to count:

"Well, I get 100 roubles a month on average, and Helmi 50. Helmi works in the fields, and when needed she weaves fishing nets."

150 roubles of family income, plus a garden plot, a cow, a piglet and hens. Not bad!

The fishermen earn well, from 100 to 200 roubles a month. Livestock workers 70 to 80 roubles. Two years ago the collective farm introduced payment in money, with advances.

The collective farmers' personal incomes are shown, for example, by facts like these. In the last three years the farmers have built 17 houses, and these are modern brick buildings. The fishermen Aleksander Saar and Villem Õunpuu are now finishing their own houses. Trawl master Andres Jõgi recently bought a "Moskvich" car. Almost every family has a motorcycle.

"Besides all this," says Endel Ling, "the collective farm has built four four-flat houses for the livestock workers and a school boarding house for 70 children."

...Once again the talk turns to the motor ship "Sõrve". On behalf of the board and all 623 members of the artel, the chairman Endel Ling congratulates the seamen of the "Sõrve" on their new ship and wishes them excellent success in their work and strong ties of friendship with the working people of the Sõrve peninsula.

WITH THE YOUNG FRIENDS OF THE SEAMEN

We found the secretary of the Komsomol organisation of the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm ... giving a lesson. Yes, Maie Liblik is a primary teacher at the Torgu eight-year school. The school's director, Herman Kask, and the senior pioneer leader, Helle Rahnel, simply could not miss the chance to have the mate of the new motor ship "Sõrve" speak to the children about the ship, the life of seamen and distant Africa.

About two hundred pairs of children's eyes lit up with delight that from now on they would have patrons like the seamen of the "Sõrve". Yes, in their letters they will tell their dear patrons about their successes at school and about what they do in their free time. And if their successes are worthy of an invitation from the seamen to visit their ship, they will be very happy. They also ask that this modest gift, a red pioneer necktie and a pioneer badge, be passed on to the schoolchildren of Africa, where the "Sõrve" will soon go on her first voyage, as a warm comradely pioneer greeting from the small Estonian peninsula of Sõrve.

With the Komsomol secretary Maie Liblik we agreed that the Komsomol organisations of the collective farm and of the motor ship "Sõrve" will work together, and that the competition for communist labour will be the basis of the patronage ties.

It is time to leave the hospitable Sõrve peninsula. In an hour I shall be in Tallinn. I shall sit down to write at once. I shall write about everything I saw on Sõrve and pass on the warm greetings of the field workers, fishermen and schoolchildren, and their wish of "Bon voyage" to the seamen.

The Plans of a Big Family

The fishermen of the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm simply had no luck this year. In the very best time for eel fishing a storm broke their gear. They had barely managed to put part of it in order again and fishing had picked up again, when a new storm came and made a clean sweep. But the Sõrve men are not the kind to lose heart in difficulties. The chairman of the collective farm, comrade Ling, is making new plans, and these are now already the plans of a big family.

Next year 10 trawlers will already plough the sea in the Sõrve collective farm, formed from four collective farms and covering the whole peninsula. The number of fishermen (although some of the older ones are retiring) will grow to 130. The fishing plan, however, is bigger than that of the four collective farms together now. If it is fulfilled, 1000 lorry-loads of fish will be given to the people. Of eels alone more than 38 tonnes will be caught, of whitefish more than 17 tonnes, and so on. For the first time this winter all the trawlers of the collective farm will go cod fishing off Ventspils.

The plans are good indeed, but what is being done to fulfil them? The chairman of the collective farm, who recently went to get to know the fishermen of the future common family at Salme, Anseküla and Lõmala, was most impressed by the men of "Varuli-Rand": hard-working and thinking of tomorrow. Fish are being caught by the kilo at present, the collective farm's annual plan is full, but the fishermen go to sea every day. The gear material needed for the big fishing season has also been stocked and the preparations are under way. There is no need to worry about "Kaljurand" either. But in the "Salme Kalur" collective farm things are bad: there is hardly any stock of fishing gear there at all.

So how does Sõrve intend to meet the winter?

When winter came the waters here were empty of fish, and so the fishermen were sent where men's strength was needed most. They are building a flour mill, enlarging the repair workshop and clearing the route of an electric line. Recently Helmi Aasaväli finished the first roach seine. It is ready for fishing, and if the weather allows, Eduard Keidong's men will go to Mõntu to catch bait fish. This year they are wiser: two seines are being made. Last year there was a mishap: in the time it took to empty the seine, the roach had disappeared from the water. If there had been more gear, they could have made two hauls one after the other.

Daily work has taught them more besides. For next year no more fixed seines will be made for the former "Sõrve Kalur" farm. The material is expensive and the gear does not pay for itself, because it is not suitable for manoeuvring. But more herring trap nets will be made. Three new motor boats will be bought to replace the old ones. The older fishermen will get one more boat for line and net fishing (so there will now be three of them in the collective farm).

From 1 January the fishermen of the collective farm will be brought together in one brigade, to be led by Mart (son of Peeter) Oeselg. The former "Varuli-Rand", "Kaljurand" and "Salme Kalur" collective farms will also remain as brigades.

The most intensive preparation for the big fishing season is now going on in Oeselg's brigade. For four years Eduard Sepp has fished in summer and in winter made all the gear the brigade needs. Already 16 eel trap frames are ready, and 20 wing sections have been made for four herring trap nets. It is doubtful whether Eduard Sepp's output will fit onto two lorry-loads in spring!

Finally a few more words about the trawlermen. STB-7238 (Captain Aleksei Tšistov) has fulfilled its annual plan. The catches of STB-7115 (Captain Väino Niinemets) are somewhat poorer. More than 80 per cent of the plan has been fulfilled on the trawlers STB-7125 (Captain Arseeni Väärtnõu) and STB-7268 (Captain Juhan Klais).

One can be sure that as one family they will work even better, and that the Salme brigade too will get on its feet.

How the FISHERMEN Live

Winter is not the season of big catches, when fully laden boats keep coming ashore. Now even a catch of some twenty kilos is a joy. But those who are diligent still fill their plans.

When the results were summed up for the annual meeting of the "Saare Kalur" collective farm, it turned out that Oskar Korsar's link of the Nasva brigade had fulfilled its first-quarter plan by 361 per cent and Martin Kupits's link by 215.4 per cent. The men of Abruka, led by Heino Vaikla, had exceeded their plan by 32.4 per cent. Osvald Adamson's link will also soon meet its fishing task.

In the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm the trawlers fishing in pairs, STB-7238 (Captain Väärtnõu) and STB-7125 (Captain Lepik), compete for first place with the other pair, STB-7115 (Captain Niinemets) and STB-7119 (Captain Org). At present the first pair is only 4 tonnes ahead of the others. In all, the trawlers caught 70 tonnes of fish in January.

Of the coastal fishermen the best are the men of the Varuli brigade (brigade leader Arnold Tamm), who have delivered 240 kg of pike and perch to the buying point.

H. VESILO

A bold start is half the victory: this is true of the brothers August and Juhan Aus, fishermen of the 1st brigade of the "Ranna" collective farm. At the beginning of January, when there was already ice in the sea, they nevertheless went out, caught a lot of perch with their shore traps and fulfilled their first-quarter plan by 186 per cent.

The other fishermen now have difficulty fulfilling the plan of 143 kg per man. They can no longer get out to sea by boat, and going further on foot is dangerous, because the ice is still weak. In the shallow water the fish traps are in, but they do not give much of a catch.

If the weather stays cold, fishing with traps under the ice could begin about the middle of next week.

Our grandfathers already talked about separating Harju bay from the sea. It could have been done by building a dam, and then the bay would have become a good fish pond. But this wish remained only a dream, because the fishermen did not have enough money and the state paid no attention to it.

Now, however, the plan has come true. The government allotted money to the forestry enterprise for building the dam, and under the direction of the Orissaare road master, comrade Kuum, the dam was built. The bay has been separated from the sea.

Valuable fish will be raised in this big "pond". While in the open sea whitefish roe and fry are food for many other fish, here they can grow into young fish safely.

Our Interview

Are You Ready?

The snow is running away from under the forest, the ice cover is cracking on the sea, the gulls are screaming on the shore. The board members and communists of the "Sõrve Kalur" collective farm meet once more to discuss the preparations for the big fishing season. We ask the deputy chairman of the collective farm, comrade Põld, to answer a few questions before the meeting begins.

Did the first quarter fulfil your hopes?

The weather this winter was very bad. Wind after wind. Because of it the ships could not go to sea. But still our four trawlers STB-7238 (Captain Väärtnõu), STB-7125 (Captain Leppik), STB-7115 (Captain Niinemets) and STB-7119 (Captain Org) fulfilled their first-quarter plan. In coastal fishing the best was the 8th brigade (brigade leader Arnold Tamm), which fulfilled its task threefold.

How are the preparations for the big fishing season going?

Better than last year. We brought the main materials in already in autumn. We are still short of a little "Hercules" rope and foam plastic. But we shall solve that question too before the fishing begins. All the old gear has been put in order. The fishermen fishing in the Gulf of Riga will get 7 new fixed seines and 10 herring trap nets, and 12 new boats are also being made for our collective farm. While at Salme and Läätsa the fishermen made their gear themselves, in Sõrve the making of it was left to August Kaus and Eduard Sepp.

Will there be anything new in the organisation of fishing this year?

Until now the boat crews fishing for valuable fish worked within the brigades. This year we shall put them on their own accounts. Then it will be clear at once whether they bring a profit or work at a loss. The boat crews will be led by such experienced fishermen as Ermi Hüüdma, August Kuusk, Mart Oeselg (son of Jüri) and others. Fishing for valuable fish makes up quite an important part of our collective farm's work. During the year valuable fish worth half a million roubles should be caught.

When the water is low the fishermen have always had difficulty reaching the buying point with their boats. Has anything been done this year to improve this?

At Läätsa we built a new jetty with our own forces and are deepening the area round the jetties with an excavator. We are also deepening the mouth of the Salme river, to make it easier for the fishermen of Tehumardi.

To sum up, one could say that we shall finish all our preparations by 15 April, and the spring fishing does not begin any earlier anyway.

We Don't Even Want to Think of Going Home

No doubt all the young school pupils who are candidates for the Spartakiad are using the school holidays for training. So are the swimmers. The Tallinn swimmers, who have good conditions for swimming in their home town all the year round, packed their skiing gear and went off to camps. The swimmers of the districts, on the other hand, whose training conditions at home are poor or lacking altogether, hurried to Tallinn.

Twice a day the pupils of Toomas Tuuling, swimming coach of the Kingissepa Children's Sports School, train in the "Kalev" indoor pool: Maie Sepp, Mai Tammik, Svetlana Ivanova, Ronald Maripuu, Viktor Tšetverikov, Jüri Lipp and Vello Väärtnõu. Besides the young islanders, T. Tuuling's training group also includes Helbe Pihlak from Tartu, Raivo Raba from Viljandi, and Juhan Pella, Rein Rooks and Rein Treima from Järvakandi.

"It really is nice to swim here," T. Tuuling praises. "And we can swim as much as we have the strength for. But at first we don't have much strength. We haven't been in the water for several months. It's good if we swim 3 to 4 kilometres in the two training sessions together. Perhaps only in the last days of the camp shall we manage a little more. But we don't even want to think of going home; there our seven candidates for the schoolchildren's team and two for the adult team will be 'on dry land' again," says the islanders' coach, seriously worried about his charges.

There is good reason for worry. It is not so long since the islanders had no swimming sport at all. Years ago a cooling tank was built by the Kingissepa power station. Wisely it was given such dimensions (25×8 m) that it could also be used as a pre-heated swimming pool. The water was too warm even in winter (+35°), but on the other hand one could swim all the year round. In 1960 this news reached the ears of Toomas Tuuling, a final-year student of the Faculty of Physical Education of Tartu State University and many times champion of the republic in butterfly swimming. Without delay he asked to be sent to work in Kingissepa. In the early summer of the same year the Kingissepa 8-year school got a freshly graduated physical education teacher, who at once began swimming courses. There were many who were interested, and Tulla, as T. Tuuling was and still is called by his former fellow competitors and coaches, had his hands and feet full. His eagerness for work lasted, and only a couple of years later the first addition to the schoolchildren's national team came from Kingissepa too. The "first swallow" was followed by more and more, and the swimming specialists of the capital could only shake their heads and say: "Yes, they do serious work there."

Now we already find nine islanders in the list of candidates for the national team, and their coach is still full of eagerness for work, but...

The year before last a powerful electric cable was brought from the mainland to Saaremaa and the engines of the Kingissepa power station were stopped. But when the engines stand still, there is no need to cool them either, and so the island swimmers were left "on dry land".

"We raised the alarm at once," says the "father" of the islanders' swimming sport, "we wrote letters and made telephone calls. The letters are moving and the telephones are ringing to this day, negotiations are held at every level, but so far it has done us no good. If it goes on like this, I shall have to give up the job of swimming coach. The capricious sea water does not allow normal swimming training in the short summer months, and even holding courses is doubtful."

Still, we hope that the telephone calls and negotiations will soon bring results and that the young people of Kingissepa will be able to train in their home town again. And we ask Toomas Tuuling one more thing: how do his charges spend their free time in Tallinn?

"That's no great worry," the coach answers with a smile. "Toiling in the water tires them out so much that after meals they tend to lie down, and in the evening at about ten o'clock they creep under the blankets quite of their own accord."

Who Came to Help? The Border Guards

The work of fishermen is not easy. The capricious sea can often bring them face to face with serious trials, and then it is good when there are people who hurry to help. Our border guards have often been the first helpers of the fishermen.

At the end of the old year the Muhu fishermen Arseeni Väärtnõu, Heino Väärtnõu and Esper Schmuul found themselves in distress at sea. They were coming from Kaliningrad with a trawler bought for the collective farm. The men were already dreaming of their cosy homes when, in the Soela Strait, the ship's engine suddenly failed. The wind began to drift the ship in the slush ice, and the anchor had to be dropped. To call for help they began to fire rockets, but because of the thick fog nobody saw them. When the rockets ran out, they tried to get help by radio, but that failed too. The fog hid the men in distress for two days. For those two days they also had to go without food. Then the fog lifted and the ship was seen from the shore, but because of the ice nobody could go to help with a boat. Now the border guards were asked for help. They brought their helicopter, and with it the men in distress were taken off the ship. The men were first taken somewhere warm, and after a long time they were able to eat their fill. A rescue ship later brought in the ship.

  • * *

There are treacherous reefs and shoals in many places off the coast of Saaremaa. Recently, in stormy weather, a trawler of the "Bolshevik" collective farm from Liepāja ran onto one of them. Just as the crew were looking on deck for a way to save themselves, a new wave came and carried Viktor Prizitšev overboard. The next wave carried the man far from the ship, but luckily towards the shore. Since Prizitšev was a good swimmer, he began to swim towards the shore in the icy water. In the water he had to throw off his outer clothes and his boots. At last the seaman, stiff with cold, reached the shore half-naked. There was not a single farm nearby. He no longer had the strength to stand up, and Prizitšev began to crawl inland.

Border guard sergeant Fisenko was just on duty when he saw a half-naked figure crawling in the snow. He hurried to him at once, wrapped the unfortunate man in his own clothes and ran for help himself. The seaman was carried to the border guards, where he was given first aid. Soon the border guards' ambulance arrived too, and in the care of the doctors Viktor Prizitšev soon recovered his health.

So the biggest sports event of our district this year, the 1st Suure Tõll sports games of Saaremaa, has come to an end. The games consisted of mass competitions in the physical culture groups, institutions, enterprises, schools and village councils, and three days of finals in Kingissepa. Almost every second islander took part in the Suure Tõll competitions, on the sports grounds as well as on hiking trails and at summer days. The first-stage competitions held locally went off successfully in Kärla village council and in the Kingissepa Mechanised Building Column. These were also awarded commemorative pennants. Words of praise can also be said about the sports days of the district hospital, the Union of the Kingissepa District Consumer Cooperatives and Mustjala village council. [...]

Notes

  • Father. Vello's father Arseni (also printed Arseeni) Väärtnõu was a Saaremaa fisherman and sea captain. In November 1954 he was trawl master on the new trawler STB-7160 of the Kingissepa motor fishing station. From 1956 he was captain of the trawler STB-7125 of the "Sõrve Kalur" fishing collective farm on the Sõrve peninsula, and by 1965 captain of STB-7238 of the same farm. His crews were often first in the trawler competitions of the district; in the autumn of 1962 his STB-7125 was the best trawler of the farm, fulfilling its third-quarter plan by 175.6 per cent.
  • In February 1957 the reporter G. Jisop, who spent a working day with the trawlers at Vergi harbour on the Gulf of Finland, saw Arseni's STB-7125 report its catch of 12 boxes by flashing its signal light, and wrote that the dearest friend of Captain Arseeni Väärtnõu in his hours of rest was the mandolin.
  • In 1962 Leopold Kokk, mate of the new merchant ship "Sõrve", visited the "Sõrve Kalur" farm to found a friendship between the ship and the peninsula. Both his own series in Eesti Meremees (and its final part in the Russian-language Estonsky Moryak of 7 November 1962) and H. Aristova's report name Arseni's crew as the best of the farm's four trawlers.
  • By the end of 1966 Arseni worked in the Muhu fishing collective farm. Coming home from Kaliningrad with a newly bought trawler, he and his crew were stranded for two days without food in fog and ice in the Soela Strait and were taken off the ship by a border guard helicopter.
  • Arseni Väärtnõu died in an accident in January 1969, as a captain in the trawler fleet of the Muhu collective farm. Vello was then 17 years old. Nine notices were printed. One is signed by the families Velsvebel and Tänav. The notice of the Fish Protection Inspectorate calls Arseni a former fellow worker there and also expresses sympathy to Arteemi and Joosep Väärtnõu, his brothers. Arteemi Väärtnõu (1916 to 2002), "Arteemi Andruse p." in official lists, headed the Pidula fish hatchery from 1944 and was named Honoured Fish Farmer of the Estonian SSR in 1980; his patronymic shows that the father of the brothers was called Andrus.
  • Family information: Arseni was one of seven brothers. Vello's mother Ida worked as a nurse at the local hospital. Her family name was Tänav; her mother, Vello's grandmother Viiu Tänav and her father, Vello's grandfather, Laas Tänav, was a sea captain and the leading man of Vintri village on the Sõrve peninsula, said to be a natural son of a manor lord related to the Ungern-Sternbergs, who gave him a good education. Some members of the family were persecuted by the KGB. In his own writings Vello tells that his mother came to visit him in prison camp and was refused.
  • Vello's mother Ida Väärtnõu died in Kuressaare in the first week of November 1991, aged 69.
  • Swimming. As a schoolboy Vello swam in the group of coach Toomas Tuuling of the Kingissepa (Kuressaare) Children's Sports School, and in January 1967 he trained with the group in the Kalev indoor pool in Tallinn among the candidates for the Estonian schoolchildren's team. At the 1st Suure Tõll sports games of Saaremaa in August 1967 he was 2nd in the boys' 50 m backstroke (41.3) and 3rd in the 50 m breaststroke (48.1). Vello also trained in the modern pentathlon (fencing, riding, swimming and other events).
  • Suure-Jaani. The Leole calendar of 2016 gives Vello's birth as 17 July 1951 in Kuressaare and says he worked at the Lahmuse state farm near Suure-Jaani (Viljandi County). Vello drove rally and played music in Suure-Jaani in those years aswell; no press report has been found yet.
