Guru Yoga is the way to ensure that all of the teachings are received properly, without ego. It is important that whatever you practice does not make your ego bigger. Guru Yoga is the practice of union with the Lama. By cultivating devotion, this practice makes it possible to truly open oneself to the Lama´s blessing. When done in combination with Guru Yoga, whatever you practice will reduce your ego.

Therefore, if someone practices a spiritual path without Guru Yoga, the practice may not go in the proper direction. Whenever you practice spiritual things, it is very important that you practice outside of the ego. If you do your spiritual or religious practice with the ego, everything becomes a poison. I’m sure that whatever you practice is a good medicine, but whether or not this becomes a true medicine depends on how you practice it. Medicine is always medicine, but it depends on how you take it. If you don’t know the proper way to take the medicine, it could be like a poison. Guru Yoga can save you from practicing in the wrong way. Without practicing Guru Yoga you can never truly learn something. You may know everything, but you cannot become a true practitioner. Guru Yoga is very important to ensure that everything you practice goes in a spiritual way.
