Guru Dorje Drolö (Tib. གུ་རུ་རྡོ་རྗེ་གྲོ་ལོད་, Wyl. gu ru rdo rje gro lod) is one of the Eight Manifestations of Guru RinpocheGuru Rinpoche in wrathful form riding upon a pregnant tigress.

He assumed this manifestation in Paro Taktsang in Bhutan in order to bring the local deities and guardians under his control.

From A Great Treasure of Blessings, page 34: Dorje Drolo: wrathful emanation of Padmasambhava and most often associated with the set of Eight Main Manifestations and the life story of Guru Rinpoche.

He also functions as a guruyoga practice/meditational deity.


For the purpose of subduing daemons and spirits of Tibet and the surrounding Himalayan regions Padmasambhava, at the thirteen mountain retreats each known as the Tiger's Den (tagtsang), appeared as the wrathful Dorje Drolo.

At many of these locations Guru Rinpoche left impressions of his feet in the rocks.


The Eight Manifestations of Padmasambhava belong to the Revealed Treasures (Tib.: ter ma) classification of teachings according to the Nyingma Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.


"In the experience of great bliss fiercely blazing with wrathful power, maroon in colour, holding a vajra and kila, the two feet dancing expressively atop a tigress; homage to Dorje Drollo." (Nyingma Liturgical verse).


At thirteen different places called 'Tiger's Lair', Taktsang, Guru Rinpoche manifested in "the terrifying wrathful form of crazy wisdom",

binding worldly spirits under oath to protect the terma treasures and serve the Dharma. Then he is known as Dorje Drolö, 'Wild Wrathful Vajra'.

The Manifestation of Crazy Wisdom, thangka painting.

Conceived as an ecstatic manifestation of Padmasambhava, the deity Dorje Drolo embodies the forces of insight and compassion beyond logic and convention.


Invoking in the practitioner the fearlessness and spontaneity of the awakened state, Dorje Drolo transforms hesitancy and clinging into enlightened activity.

He rides a pregnant tigress, which signifies the latent power of our intrinsic Buddha Nature.

Drolo's energy overcomes distinctions of life and death, representing instead a continual process of giving birth to new circumstances and possibilities.

Padmasambhava manifested as Dorje Drolo at numerous pilgrimage places in order to subvert indigenous Tibetan beliefs in demons and malevolent gods, redirecting their powerful energies toward the path of wisdom and compassion.

"He manifested in the terrifying wrathful form of crazy wisdom in the thirteen places named Tiger's Nest (stag tshang) binding all the mundane spirits under oath to serve the Dharma and entrusted them to guard the terma treasures.

At that time he was named Dorje Drollo."


On one occassion in this form Padmasambhava, flew to Paro Taktsang from Khenpajong in northeast Bhutan on the back of a tigress in order to subdue demonic forces.


There are many important terma focusing on the Guru in this form.

From Vajrapani, the Great Bodhisattva, Guardian and Preserver of the Mahayana Teachings, Padma heard the Anuyoga Tantras.


Then he dwelled in the cemetery known as the Pile of the Worlds, turning the Wheel of the Dharma for the dakinis for five years.

At the end of this time, he received the name rDo-rje gro-lod.


Guru Dorje Drolo, a wisdom form, an expression of the rainbow body emanated in the final days before Padmasambhava's departure from Tibet.

Dorje Drolo made many prophecies and multiplied terma through his meditative powers,


securing the commitment of local spirits to extend their protection across generations.

Dorje Drolo is the Buddha oriented toward the welfare of practitioners in the future - our present degenerate age.


As rDo-rje gro-lod, Padma fearlessly treads underfoot the ever -deceptive ego and severs karmic entanglements by wielding his three-edged phur-bu.

By subduing the self-created demons and fascinations of individual predispositions, he reveals the apparitional nature of all selfish aims and exposes the mind as utterly pure and receptive to whatever arises.


He challenges every manifestation of negativity with an attitude that each life situation, regardless of its outward appearance, can prove to be an instruction in truth.

Thus he has the power to overcome self - deception and illusions created by human perceptions, and comfort beings with the cool radiance of the Dharma.


Appearing in peaceful and wrathful forms, Padma teaches in manifold ways to counteract the karmic obscurations which surface as the life style of a being, a people, a country, or an era.

The rational mind cannot conceive of the innumerable manifestations possible for the Great Guru, who appears wherever and whenever there is a need for his presence.

In the past, he has appeared in human and non-human realms, in the lands of


India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Burma, Central Asia, Afghanistan, parts of China and Russia, Egypt, Africa,


the now unknown island of Damadu, and the uncharted realm of Shambhala.

It is said he now manifests in the land of the Copper Mountain, which many equate with the West.


Recent Termas have been found in North America.


Tsokyi Dorje (Lake Born Vajra) is Gyamtso Dorje (Ocean Born Vajra).


Some current Vajrayana Gurus translate the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans into the English language as “Great Ocean.”


To those tormented by mental anguish, emotional instability, and insecurity, he dispels the cause of their suffering and brings peace of mind.

By the power of his blessing, beings are protected from the demonic energies of chaos, particularly destructive during this darkened Kali Yuga age.
