Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old

Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.

A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!

We kindly ask our readers to help us cover the cost of this important upgrade and also help with the ongoing costs of keeping the Encyclopedia alive and freely available.

འཇིག་རྟེན་སྐྱོང་བ། (Wyl. 'jig rten skyong ba) Pron.: jikten kyongwa

  • Skt. लोकपालः, lokapāla, Pron.: lokapala. From Sanskrit: a world-protector, guardian of the w world (the Loka-pālas are sometimes regarded as the guardian deities of different orders of beings, but more commonly of the four cardinal and four intermediate points of the world, viz. | to | 2. Agni, of South-east | 3. Yama, of South | 4. Sūrya, of South-west | 5. Varuṇa, of West | 6. Pavana or Vāyu, of North-west | 7. Kubera, of North | 8. Soma or Candra of North-east | others substitute Nir-ṛiti for 4 and Īśānī or Pṛithivī for 8 | according to | the Buddhists enumerate 4 or 8 or 10 or 14 Loka-pālas | a protector or ruler of the people, king, prince | N. of various kings | of Avalokiteśvara | protection of the people (?)
