Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old

Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.

A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!

ཁམས། (Wyl. khams ) n. Pron.: kham

  • Skt. धातु, dhātu, Pron.: dhatu. m. layer, stratum, constituent part, ingredient, element, primitive matter (= (mahā-bhūta)) (usually reckoned as 5, viz. [kha] or (ākāśa), (anila), (tejas), [jala], (bhū) to which is added (brahma), a constituent element or essential ingredient of the body (distinct from the 5 mentioned above and conceived either as 3 humours [called also [doṣa]] phlegm, wind and bile [cf. [purīṣa], [māṃsa], (manas)] or as the 5 organs of sense, [indriyāṇi], where [śrotra], [ghrāṇa], (āsya), (hṛdaya) and [koṣṭha] are mentioned as the 5 dhātu of the human body born from the either] and the 5 properties of the elements perceived by them, (gandha), (rasa), (rūpa), (sparśa) and (śabda) or the 7 fluids or secretions, chyle, blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, semen cf. Suśr. [[ras^adi] or [rasa-rakt^adi], of which sometimes 10 are given, the above 7 and hair, skin, sinews cf. BhP.]) primary element of the earth, i.e. metal, mineral, are (esp. a mineral of a red colour) element of words , i.e. grammatical or verbal root or stem (with the southern Buddhists (dhātu) means either the 6 elements [see above] cf. Dharmas. xxv or the 18 elementary spheres [dhātu-loka] or the ashes of the body, relics [cf. [-garbha]])
  • Kham (Tib. ཁམས་, Wyl. khams), often translated as Eastern Tibet
