Vello Väärtnõu

Vello Väärtnõu sündis 17.juulil 1951 aastal Saaremaal Kuressaare linnas meremehe perekonnas. Käis Kuressaare koolis, tegi sporti (viievõistlust, ujumist-jõudis Eesti noorte edetabelis esikohale, purjetas), mängis ansamblites kitarri.

1969.a aasta jaanuaris uppus teadmata asjaoludel Vello Väärtnõu isa, millest rahvas teadis rääkida, et seal olnud KGB käsi mängus.

Tal tekkis mõte luua Eestis kommunistidele vastukaaluks opositsioonipartei.

Kolmel viimasel suvel on olnud pikemat aega Eestis.

Pagulaselu ajal on olnud tal järgmised näitused:

Juba 1988aasta mai lõpus oli ühes Stockholmi galeriis VV esimene näitus (pildid maalitud Stockholmis hotellitoas, kus kahe voodi vahel vaid veerand meetrit vaba ruumi).

  • 1988 sügis - München
  • 1989 veebruar - Zürich
  • 1989 juuni - Vaasa muuseum
  • 1989 detsember - Lääne-Berliin
  • 1989 detsember - Frankfurt Maini ääres
  • 1990 mai - Helsinki
  • 1990 september - Tallinn, G-galerii
  • 1990 september - Leningrad
  • 1990 detsember - 1991 jaanuar - Stockholm, Mälärgalleriet
  • 1991 juuni - Rootsi, Strängnäs
  • 1991 kevad - Tartu Kunstimuuseum

Sellest on muidugi kahju, kuigi Väärtnõu hämmastava viljakuse juures pole see vist (vähemalt arvude keeles väljendatuna) eriti suur kadu.

Vello Väärtnõu piltide keskel on väga kindel olla.

Vello Väärtnõu

Vello Väärtnõu was born on 17 July 1951 in the town of Kuressaare on Saaremaa, in a seaman's family. He attended school in Kuressaare, did sport (pentathlon, swimming - he reached first place in the Estonian youth rankings, sailing), and played guitar in bands.

In January 1969 Vello Väärtnõu's father drowned in unknown circumstances, about which the people said that the KGB had a hand in it. On 20 June 1970 Väärtnõu was arrested in Karelia for an attempt to cross the border, and the Supreme Court of the Karelian ASSR in Petrozavodsk sentenced him to 3 years in a prison camp, which he served in the Komi ASSR in Vuktyl, near Pechora.

After being freed in June 1972 Väärtnõu came to Estonia and settled in Suure-Jaani, because he had no permission to go home to Saaremaa. In the summer of the same year he also painted his first pictures and began to be interested in history and philosophy.

Having completed grades 10 and 11 by correspondence study in one year, he went to live in Tartu, with the plan of beginning to study history at the university.

When Väärtnõu handed in his papers, however, the dean (let his name remain unnamed) assured him that as long as he was in office, Väärtnõu would not be taken into the university - it was pointless to try.

He was indeed not taken into the university, but he stayed in Tartu and began to get acquainted with its art life. He studied drawing in Kaljo Põllu's art class and made his first graphic prints there.

Soon Väärtnõu began to live in Tallinn. The graphic artist Alo Hoidre invited him to work with graphics at the Art Institute, and in the years 1973-1978 Väärtnõu did indeed study graphic techniques under the Art Institute's master Aleksander Sarri.

From the study of Buddhist and Taoist philosophy an interest in Eastern art arose; Japanese art of the 12th century and Chinese art of the 16th century became a special hobby, and he also translated from Russian materials on Chinese art.

He also studied painting in 1974-1980 under his friend, the artist Jüri Arrak.

In 1975 an interest in astrology was added, and Vello Väärtnõu founded the Estonian Astrology Society and in the years 1980-1981 gave lectures on astrology and Buddhism in Tallinn to those interested.

In 1979 Väärtnõu was accepted as a member of the Youth Association of the Artists' Union.

The next year the art scholar Sirje Helme wrote in the magazine "Noorus" about him as a landscape painter with great prospects, and in September Väärtnõu made a study trip to the Ivolga monastery in Buryatia.

In 1982 Väärtnõu's first paintings reached the Tokyo world exhibition.

On 5 November 1982 Väärtnõu was arrested again in Karelia, this time near Kemi together with Tarmo Urb, accused of an attempt to cross the border. For lack of evidence of guilt he was released on 5 May 1983, when a commission led by Prof. Jüri Saarma declared Väärtnõu a severe schizophrenic and he was put for a month into the Tallinn psycho-neurological hospital.

When Väärtnõu was let out of there, it turned out that in the meantime he had been thrown out of the Youth Association of the Artists' Union on the grounds that he had not paid the traffic inspectorate the fines for speeding and that his behaviour did not correspond to the norms of conduct of a Soviet artist. The way to exhibitions in Estonia was thus closed.

In June 1982 Vello Väärtnõu founded the Estonian Buddhist Brotherhood, and under his leadership the first Buddhist stupa was built at Panga-Rehe.

The next year a stupa was built in Läänemaa in the village of Tuuru, and a year later two more stupas in the same place. The journeys to the monasteries of Buryatia continued.

The Buddhist Brotherhood was engaged in translating literature on Buddhism (from English, Russian, German and Finnish), and copied and distributed the translations.

Thangkas (sacred pictures), khatas (prayer scarves) were painted and silk-screen printed, and burkhans (holy figures) were made. All this was also taken to Buryatia, where it was very much appreciated and awaited, both in the monasteries and among the believers, because such things were not made there on the spot.

Under the influence of the meeting organised on 23 August 1987 in Hirvepark by the Estonian Group for Publicising the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Väärtnõu came into politics in the autumn of the same year.

The idea arose in him to create in Estonia an opposition party as a counterweight to the Communists.

On 21 January 1988, on Vello Väärtnõu's initiative, 14 citizens of the Republic of Estonia signed the proposal to create the Estonian National Independence Party. A press conference in Moscow followed. The KGB had had enough and events developed on very quickly.

Väärtnõu had organised the printing and distribution of leaflets before the 71st anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, and also the printing of anniversary cards. On 2 February Silvert Zholdin, who was distributing leaflets, was arrested, and on 6 February the KGB carried out a search at Väärtnõu's and several others' places.

Väärtnõu was first put before a choice: either we put you in the madhouse and "cure you", or we send you out of the country.

After a few days it turned out that the schizophrenia diagnosis had been taken off, and the new choice sounded: either prison (a reason will be found) or out. And on 13 February Vello Väärtnõu was sent out of the country to Sweden, where he lives to this day.

For the last three summers he has been in Estonia for longer periods.

During his life in exile he has had the following exhibitions:

Already at the end of May 1988, VV's first exhibition was held in a Stockholm gallery (the pictures were painted in a hotel room in Stockholm, where there was only a quarter of a metre of free space between the two beds).

  • Autumn 1988 - Munich
  • February 1989 - Zurich
  • June 1989 - Vaasa museum
  • December 1989 - West Berlin
  • December 1989 - Frankfurt am Main
  • May 1990 - Helsinki
  • September 1990 - Tallinn, G-Gallery
  • September 1990 - Leningrad
  • December 1990 to January 1991 - Stockholm, Mälärgalleriet
  • June 1991 - Sweden, Strängnäs
  • Spring 1991 - Tartu Art Museum

How to characterise the art of Vello Väärtnõu?

Besides graphics he started right away with landscape painting too; in the early 1980s he delved into abstraction, and he also came to the republican exhibition with abstract compositions

The preference of the Artists' Union for realism and figural composition in choosing pictures for exhibitions pushed abstraction into the background also in Väärtnõu's work.

On arriving in Stockholm, Väärtnõu was amazed by the absolute oldness of the art life there, although in his own opinion he had become acquainted with Western art through books more than enough.

Väärtnõu began to paint still more intensively, turning to abstraction again.

But in Vello Väärtnõu's case it is actually not important whether he has just made a figural composition, a landscape or an abstract picture - what is decisive is colour, surfaces, textures.

Lately he mostly uses mixed technique and, proceeding from the value judgement held in honour in Japan that everything that is old is good, Väärtnõu often gives his pictures an "old" air - mainly through the choice of colours. The dense and deep colour gamut of a large part of his paintings brings to mind the works of the old masters of Europe.

A long friendship with one of the first avant-gardists of the USSR, the internationally known artist Gleb Bogomolov (St Petersburg), has also left its mark on his work.

And since Väärtnõu has studied thangka painting, his use of colour is also oriented to the principles of Eastern art, which by very exact rules take into account the effect of colour on the psyche.

In general Väärtnõu's pictures in the great majority depict psychic states.

The Buddhist approach says that reality is an illusion of our consciousness, what is received through the senses is a deception of the senses, and the state of our consciousness reflects the surrounding world far better than our senses.

His pictures are like a signpost or a guide to psychic analysis.

Väärtnõu's principle is: even when depicting objects, not to depict objects really, but on the contrary - to sense oneself in relation to the surrounding world, because this relation, which expresses itself in a psychic state, is more objective and more real than the objects themselves.

Vello Väärtnõu maintains that a picture does not have to say anything, but must create a mood.

A picture depicts some momentary state; looking at the picture one can restore that state in oneself and also transmit it to the viewers. The psychic state put into a picture is like a symbol of its own kind, which can be interpreted.

His pictures are powerful, self-confident, spontaneous, they are very spatial, dense, many-planed. Väärtnõu uses colours masterfully. I do not know a single Estonian artist who would master the art of glazing even approximately as he does.

The pictures can be viewed both from afar and from close up, every square centimetre is filled, and on delving into even a small patch a whole world opens up.

At the same time he is capable of finishing one picture for years, true, in doing so it often happens that several completely finished and different pictures get painted one on top of the other.

That is of course a pity, although with Väärtnõu's amazing fertility it is probably (at least expressed in numbers) not a very big loss.

Nobody knows (hardly he himself) how many pictures he has made; those closer to him can only guess, and not believe their guess. For painting is only one of the activities to which Väärtnõu has devoted himself.

In the Western press there has been much talk about the political background in connection with Väärtnõu's exhibitions, it has even been used as a key to his person, but the most important thing about him is nevertheless art as such and Buddhism. It may be supposed that this is why there is no violence, confusion or chaos in his pictures. Looking at them - and one can look at them for hours - fear or anguish does not seize you, but you can experience a flow of balance, strength and clarity. Among Vello Väärtnõu's pictures it is very safe to be.
