Budismi entsüklopeedia koostaja Vello Väärtnõu: Budism on mu ainus kirg

Näiteks budistlikud tekstid (kusjuures neid on tõlgitud vaid väike hulk) jäävad tegelikult teadlasele arusaamatuks ja kasutamiskõlbmatuks, kuna tal puudub suuline selgitus, kuidas neist aru saada. Seetõttu on enamik teadurite töödest selles vallas vaid üldinformatiivsed, puutumata tegelikku tähendust, ja lisaks pole nad sageli päevagi teinud “fieldworki” idas, budistide keskel.

2012. aasta veebruaris said alguse igal aastal toimuvad rahvusvahelised konverentsid “Buddhism & Australia”, juunis toimus näitus Perthi raekojas ning juba aasta lõpul esitles Väärtnõu Berkeleys “Hiina Budismi Entsüklopeedia” online-projekti.

Mis on “Hiina Budismi Entsüklopeedia” loomise põhjuseks?

Väärtnõu nendib, et interneti areng on olnud viimase 20 aasta jooksul ülikiire ning see on toonud kaasa peale positiivse ka negatiivseid nähtusi. Informatsioon on kättesaadav küll laiadele massidele, kuid samas on esitatav materjal paljuski toodetud copy paste meetodil, mis kindlustab vigade leviku ning elimineerib värske ja mitmekülgse mõtlemise. Internet on küllastunud sellisest korduvast vigasest infost, ja lisaks on kogu terminoloogia täiesti ühtlustamata – sama sanskriti, tiibeti, pali terminit kirjutatakse ingliskeelses netis kümnel erineval viisil.

Siinkohal tuleb mainida, et Väärtnõu on esimese eestikeelse online’is oleva budismi entsüklopeedia autor.

Väärtnõu sõnul on entsüklopeedia projektil mitu etappi:

  • 1) koguda ning sisestada budismialane digitaliseeritud materjal,
  • 2) digitaliseerida ajaloolised tekstid, dokumendid, materjalid;

HBE küll rõhutab Hiina budismi erinevaid vorme, kuid lähtudes selles sisalduvast materjalist ning erinevatest keeltest, on see tegelikult maailma budismi entsüklopeedia.

Entsüklopeedia kasutama õppimine võib võtta veidi aega, kuna alajaotusi on väga palju. Kuid alati on võimalik kasutada otsingumootorit ja tähestikku.

Miks on just see entsüklopeedia eriline?

  • Juba praegu on HBE üks suuremaid budismimaterjale sisaldavaid andmebaase inglise keeles.
  • HBE sisaldab siselinke igas artiklis.
  • Entsüklopeedia sisaldab rikkalikult illustratsioone – see eristab teda teistest saitidest. Selline materjali käsitlemine – linkimine ja illustreerimine – on omane ainult HBE-le.

Kogu selle mahuka töö on teinud vaid kaks inimest!

Kogu selle töö on teinud vaid kaks inimest Lääne-Austraalia väikeses maakohas, kus internet on ainus side maailmaga, töötades sõna otseses mõttes 24/7 ja enamjaolt 18 tundi ööpäevas. Kusjuures see on alles algus, sest projekt on ülipikk.

The Compiler of the Buddhist Encyclopedia, Vello Väärtnõu: Buddhism Is My Only Passion

At the end of last year, history was made once again in the field of academic scholarship at the annual PNC conference at Berkeley University, and the one who made it was the Estonian-born Buddhist Vello Väärtnõu, who has been a Swedish citizen for decades and to whom Australia granted citizenship as an outstandingly talented person (Distinguished Talented Visa) in 2010. Marju Broder writes about Vello Väärtnõu's contribution to compiling the "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia" and to the spreading of Buddhism more generally.

At Berkeley, Väärtnõu presented the online project "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia", which received much attention in the Asian press, in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Mongolia, even before its official start, and was called the Project of the Century.

It must be said that the Asian press loves to talk with Väärtnõu and to write about him, because in that part of the world people who carry Buddhist wisdom are held in high esteem. Buddhist monks, nuns and professors work in the universities, and Buddhism is a natural part of life.

As a side remark I would add that in that part of the world scholars and Buddhists are not divided into two camps, as has so far been the custom in Estonia, and the European idea that a scholar knows Buddhism better than an educated Buddhist seems especially funny to them. A scholar is, after all, a person who studies Buddhism and Buddhists, and who relies only on the information available to him. This, however, means that he has no access to most of the Buddhist information, which is passed on only from teacher to student. For example, Buddhist texts (of which, moreover, only a small number have been translated) in fact remain incomprehensible and unusable to the scholar, because he lacks the oral explanation of how to understand them. For this reason most of the researchers' works in this field are only of general informative value, without touching the real meaning, and in addition they have often not done even a single day of "fieldwork" in the East, among Buddhists.

Why is this project special, what does the "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia" contain, and who is Vello Väärtnõu?

Vello Väärtnõu has stood out all his life for extraordinary ideas and projects, which is why words such as "first", "only", "innovative" and so on will often have to be used about him in what follows.

In the 1970s and 1980s, when Estonia was in the depths of the socialist era and religious activity was frowned upon and punishable, Väärtnõu studied at the Ivolga Monastery in Buryatia, which was at that time the only Buddhist educational institution in the Soviet Union. The communists had destroyed all the monasteries of Buryatia, and only in 1945 was the first Buddhist monastery opened again, at Ivolga near Ulan-Ude. Väärtnõu's teachers there were lamas of the older generation who had spent more than 20 years imprisoned in Stalinist prison camps and who, on their release, went back to their natural surroundings, the monastery.

Väärtnõu studied there for eight years Buddhist philosophy, texts, rituals, astrology and architecture, acquiring the degree of Doctor of Buddhist Philosophy, and he put his knowledge to use in Estonia, founding the Estonian Buddhist Brotherhood and laying the foundation of the tradition of practical Buddhism in Estonia.

The whole process of study and activity could not be made widely public at that time. Only a few people knew about it, and partly also cultural circles, because otherwise it would have harmed the monastery: the KGB kept a careful eye on everything. Non-Buryats were forbidden to study there, and the monastery would have been punished for such activity. In Estonia, however, the KGB often carried out searches at Väärtnõu's home and took away Buddhist texts, statues, slides and so on.

What is the founding of a tradition of practical Buddhism

Since perhaps not everyone is familiar with Buddhist traditions, it is fitting to explain what the founding of a tradition of practical Buddhism is. The first sign of founding a tradition is the spreading of the so-called earthly body of Buddhism: Buddhist architecture, texts and literature, and the creation of Buddha statues, sacred images and the other earthly inventory of Buddhism, and planting them in an intellectual and religious environment, in this case in Estonia.

Väärtnõu founded the first Nyingma movement, the Estonian Buddhist Brotherhood or Taola, in 1982 in Tallinn and created the basis for the spread of Buddhism. He built all five stupas in Estonia (the first four of them were the first stupas in Northern Europe), and he has translated dozens of Buddhist texts and books, which were copied and published in the 1980s in samizdat form, because there was no possibility of publishing them officially. Väärtnõu is also [the author] of the first Estonian thangkas (sacred images). Under his direction Buddha statues were made at Taola, thangkas were printed by silk screen, and the first Buddhist rituals were performed. Väärtnõu also bought a country property in order to found the first Buddhist monastery, but its building was left unfinished for political reasons.

The proposal to create the Estonian National Independence Party

In 1987 Väärtnõu came forward with the proposal to create the Estonian National Independence Party, and in January 1988 he held a scandalous press conference for foreign journalists in Moscow, where he officially announced to the world the creation of the ERSP. This was the first public proposal to create an opposition party in the 70-year history of the former Soviet Union. At that time the local press of course kept silent about it, but in the foreign press articles about Väärtnõu and his sensational announcement appeared on the front page of the New York Times and in dozens of other papers.

Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who at that time worked as a reporter at Radio Free Europe, joyfully read out Väärtnõu's statement on the creation of the ERSP on the same day, but by now Ilves has simply passed over Väärtnõu's role in silence.

The importance of this event reached the understanding of Estonians decades later: whereas at first Väärtnõu was accused of killing the Estonian people with such a proposal, this year even Marju Lauristin noted the historical importance of that event, saying that the ERSP opened the door to a multi-party system in the Soviet Union, while forgetting, however, to say that it was not she herself who created the party, but Väärtnõu and a small group of Buddhists from the Estonian Buddhist Brotherhood.

A collective loss of memory also struck the Brotherhood's secretary of that time, Eve Pärnaste, whose recent voluminous book on the ERSP lacks, as its only omission, an interview with Väärtnõu, and who tries in the book to show herself as the initiator and promoter of the matter, whom everyone asked for advice.

In February 1988 the KGB arrested Väärtnõu and expelled him from Estonia. The Swedish state gave Väärtnõu political asylum, and according to the ambassador of that time, Dag Hartelius, he was the only person in the history of the Swedish state who received a residence permit and citizenship in 15 minutes.

The first Buddhism conference, Buddhist architecture in Tallinn, and the encyclopedia

Väärtnõu studied at Kathmandu University and privately also for five years with the abbot of a Bhutanese monastery, Khenpo Namgyal, and he spent eight years alone in retreat.

Active work began again in 2005 with the creation of the "Estonian Nyingma Encyclopedia of Buddhism", and already in 2007 the first Buddhism conference, "Buddhism and Nordland", took place, whose author and organiser was again Väärtnõu. Over five years the conference brought internationally recognised scholars and Buddhists together in Tallinn. It was the first scholarly conference in Europe on the subject of Estonian and Nordic Buddhism, in the course of which more than a hundred scholarly articles were published and free access to these works was given on the web.

In 2008 Väärtnõu initiated the creation of new Buddhist architecture in Estonia: the fifth stupa (10 m), the Fire Temple and a prayer wheel were built, all of it at his own expense and by the small team of Estonian Nyingma, because not a single Estonian Buddhist or Buddhist organisation was interested in building the stupa or supported it. Instead, quite ordinary people from Tallinn and from Koonga parish supported it, some with money, some by lending a cement mixer, donating crushed stone or paint for the stupa. So all our stupas and Buddhist architecture have been built by Väärtnõu and Estonian Nyingma.

Väärtnõu was also the first to begin creating thangkas in computer graphics, and he used 3D graphics in creating temples and mandalas. By now he is a widely recognised thangka master, whose works created in computer graphics have reached both the Swedish Museum of Ethnography and the possession of the Thai royal family.

Since 2010 Väärtnõu has lived and worked in Australia, where, as is typical of him, he immediately began with big projects. In 2011 he started a project to research and preserve the materials of the history of Buddhism in Australia, creating the website Australian Buddhist History on the web.

In February 2012 the annual international conferences "Buddhism & Australia" began, in June there was an exhibition in the Perth Town Hall, and already at the end of the year Väärtnõu presented the online project "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia" at Berkeley.

What is the reason for creating the "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia"?

Väärtnõu observes that the development of the internet over the last 20 years has been extremely fast, and besides the positive it has also brought negative phenomena. Information is indeed available to the broad masses, but at the same time the material presented is in large part produced by the copy and paste method, which ensures the spread of errors and eliminates fresh and many-sided thinking. The internet is saturated with such repeated, faulty information, and in addition the whole terminology is completely unstandardised: the same Sanskrit, Tibetan or Pali term is written in ten different ways on the English-language internet.

Here it must be mentioned that Väärtnõu is the author of the first online encyclopedia of Buddhism in the Estonian language. He began it in 2005, and the idea was to gather together different articles and explanations about Buddhism in Estonian, in order to give an overview of its different aspects. I have sometimes heard the opinion: why are there different points of view in it? According to Väärtnõu the answer is simple: by reading different aspects and thoughts, the reader develops his own thinking and forms a personal understanding.

In his interview given in Taiwan, Väärtnõu explains that when he was making the Estonian-language encyclopedia in 2005, it seemed to him to have a very small reach (there are, after all, only one million Estonians), and already then he had the idea of making a thorough encyclopedia of Buddhism in the two most widely spoken languages of the world, English and Chinese. According to Väärtnõu, the idea of his project is to create a worldwide online database of Buddhism, emphasising Chinese culture but at the same time covering all other countries and schools as well.

This grandiose idea has astonished many well-known scholars and Buddhists, since it is an extremely large project that will last for decades and, it may be supposed, beyond our lifetime as well.

Professor Emeritus Lew Lancaster of Berkeley University, who understood the importance and scope of the whole project at his very first encounter with it, said jokingly to Väärtnõu that he wondered why such an idea had not come into his own head in 30 years! He invited Väärtnõu to Berkeley to present the encyclopedia at the PNC conference, which is dedicated to digital research and to developing cooperation between scholars and professionals of the Pacific region.

The stages and vision of creating the encyclopedia

So the first Estonian went to speak about Buddhism and his project at a top university in the USA, to let the world know what the "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia" (CBE) is and what the author's vision for developing the project is. According to Väärtnõu, the encyclopedia project has several stages:

  • 1) to collect and enter digitised material on Buddhism;
  • 2) to digitise historical texts, documents and materials;
  • 3) to create and popularise new forms, 3D, films and so on, in giving Buddhist education.

At first the encyclopedia is being made in two languages, English and Chinese, in order to bring together Chinese- and English-speaking Buddhists, scholars, students, and organisations such as universities, temples, monasteries and societies.

Väärtnõu has a clear vision and plan to develop the encyclopedia further in different languages, so that sub-encyclopedias will arise on the Buddhism of different countries in their own languages, and the same material would also appear in English and Chinese. The CBE does emphasise the different forms of Chinese Buddhism, but judging by the material it contains and its different languages, it is in fact an encyclopedia of world Buddhism. According to the author, the purpose and symbolic meaning of the name were chosen to develop understanding and cooperation between the users of the world's two largest languages.

China, as is known, has a long history, the largest number of Buddhists in the world and an enormous potential to develop and preserve the teachings of Buddhism in the 21st century. The academic approach to the material, in turn, gives the possibility of treating the material scientifically, making it accessible and close to the person of today.

In summary it can be said that the main aim of the "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia" is the storing of Buddhist information, that is, to collect the existing material, to digitise and translate it, in order to preserve it in the present rapidly changing era.

The computer age holds a great danger for traditional Buddhist material and its treatment. If Buddhist culture does not adapt to this changing scenario, there is a great danger of its disappearance. With skilful handling, however, the internet age offers great opportunities.

What has happened during the first year of compiling the encyclopedia?

It is a joy to note that letters of support for the project have arrived from all over the world, both from scholars and from Buddhists. For example, the famous specialist in Tibetan medicine and Tibetologist Natalia Bolsokhoeva has written that Väärtnõu, with his knowledge and skills and his enormous dedication, is the only one who is able to carry out a project of such scope. Professor Lionel Obadia of the University of Lyon, on the other hand, says that the CBE is an extremely useful tool. Some of the letters of support can be read here.

The first stage of the encyclopedia has made a stunning start: within a year, 20,000 articles in English and 4,000 in Chinese have been selected, collected, entered, illustrated and linked!

The encyclopedia is divided into 36 main categories and 1,500 subcategories, which by now contain 20,000 articles in English and also already the much-needed dictionaries of Chinese, Tibetan, Japanese, Pali and Sanskrit terminology. See an example here.

Learning to use the encyclopedia may take a little time, since there are very many subdivisions. But it is always possible to use the search engine and the alphabet.

Why is this encyclopedia in particular special?

  • Already now the CBE is one of the largest databases containing Buddhist material in English.
  • The CBE contains internal links in every article. This means that by clicking on a word a person immediately finds an explanation, and in this way also keeps coming upon more and more new information.
  • No other site has such links, because such linking means a tremendous amount of work.
  • The division into categories and the connecting and linking of the material with each other, however, require complete mastery of the material, as well as an understanding of the technical side and precise management.
  • The encyclopedia contains rich illustrations, and this distinguishes it from other sites. Such treatment of the material, linking and illustrating, is characteristic only of the CBE.

All this vast work has been done by only two people!

All this work has been done by only two people in a small rural place in Western Australia, where the internet is the only connection with the world, working literally 24/7 and mostly 18 hours a day. And this is only the beginning, because the project is extremely long.

In December Väärtnõu has been invited to a conference in Japan, and after the 3rd international conference Buddhism & Australia in Perth (February 2014), which he organises himself, the Buddhists and scholars of Taiwan are already waiting for Väärtnõu.

The idea of creating the "Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia" and the vision of its development are extraordinary, and it can safely be said that this project already now belongs to the history of world Buddhism. To quote the editor of the international website Buddhistdoor, Cathy Zieng: "To meet a man named Vello Väärtnõu is to come face to face with an enormous Personal Power, which is expressed in a passionately burning sense of mission and dedication to Buddhism."

Finally I give the word to Vello Väärtnõu himself, who says this about himself: "I may look on the surface like an Estonian, but in fact I am rather an Asian in my thinking and way of life. I have always buried my money in Buddhism, and I think that people should be able to share in this great cultural heritage that the East offers us. Buddhism is my only passion and addiction; these are the only symptoms I have."
