Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old

Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.

A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!

We kindly ask our readers to help us cover the cost of this important upgrade and also help with the ongoing costs of keeping the Encyclopedia alive and freely available.

Kes on Vello Väärtnõu?

Vello Väärtnõu.
Vello Väärtnõu.

Vello Väärtnõu.

Vello Väärtnõu (57) on Eesti ajaloos legendaarne tegelane, Eesti Rahvusliku Sõltumatuse Partei (ERSP) looja, pärit Saaremaalt, praeguse siseministri Jüri Pihli koolivend.

Väärtnõu pilt oli New York Times'i artikli esikaanel.

Who Is Vello Väärtnõu?

Vello Väärtnõu.
Vello Väärtnõu.

Vello Väärtnõu.

Vello Väärtnõu (57) is a legendary figure in Estonian history, the founder of the Estonian National Independence Party (ERSP), from Saaremaa, a schoolmate of the present Minister of the Interior, Jüri Pihl. After the founding of the ERSP in 1987 and the action organised in Tartu on 2 February 1988, Väärtnõu was expelled from the Soviet Union. He lived in Sweden for 14 years; in 2007 he began to restore his farm in Lääne County near Lihula, where he is building a Buddhist temple.

On 20 August 2007 a large-scale police raid was carried out at his home, in the course of which the whole dwelling was searched and turned inside out, and all his acquaintances were taken into custody for several days and then let go, because nothing at all was found. Afterwards there was no apology, and he was told to keep quiet. And advised to leave Estonia if he did not like it. Is that not a splendid welcome for an Estonian who has come back to Estonia?! His videos are good viewing for those who plan to move to Estonia from abroad. I would certainly advise thinking twice first.

Particularly delightful is the fact that when Väärtnõu's assistant Marju Broder contacted Eesti Ekspress to get help, Mihkel Kärmas wrote a complete lampoon about the matter, in which, figuratively speaking, he stabbed the man in the back as well. And afterwards he did not even want to talk to Väärtnõu any more, to set the truth right and write about things as they were. Even the police said that Kärmas had blown up a bubble, as Päevaleht wrote.

Väärtnõu contacted the café after reading in the paper how the police had carried out a brutal search at the café. Besides Väärtnõu, many other people have also been in touch, and the café will now write their stories one after another. Terrible things are happening in Estonia, and nobody has talked about them anywhere.

Väärtnõu made history when in 1988 in Moscow he held an improvised press conference for Western journalists, at which he presented the idea of the ERSP and what is done to people in the USSR. Väärtnõu's picture was on the front page with a New York Times article. Immediately after this press conference Väärtnõu was expelled from the USSR. He got a Swedish visa in Moscow in 5 minutes; the man had nothing in his pocket but a toothbrush.
