Introduction to White Lotus Cult
Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old
Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.
A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!
We kindly ask our readers to help us cover the cost of this important upgrade and also help with the ongoing costs of keeping the Encyclopedia alive and freely available.

White Lotus is not related or rooted to Taoism. It is a religion that was born officially in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) 宋朝 when the Pure Land Sect Buddhism was introduced into China and stirred up the hype of Buddhism. The name "White Lotus" tells us that it is a Buddhism-geared religion!
Before White Lotus was formed, there is an old religion by the Persian called the “Moh Li (Mani) Religion” 摩尼教, which is a very old religion created by the Persian and their founder is called “Mani”. This is a religion that combine the Christianity and Zoroastrianism theory into one. After this religion was brought into China in the Tang Dynasty, the female King Wu Jak Tin 武則天 (624-705 AD) had changed the name to "Bright Religion" or "Ming Gaau 明教" - which is where White Lotus is born from. Combining the "Bright Religion" with some salt and pepper of Buddhism, there goes the White Lotus .
