Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old

Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.

A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!

We kindly ask our readers to help us cover the cost of this important upgrade and also help with the ongoing costs of keeping the Encyclopedia alive and freely available.

Stockholmis, 19. veebruaril 1988.

MRP-AEG ja ERSP ÜLESKUTSE (EPL 2. märts 1988)

Appeal of MRP-AEG and ERSP
EPL 2 March 1988

We Estonians who have been forced to leave our homeland and live in Sweden appeal to democratic governments in connection with the marking of the 70th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Estonia. It is our wish that the world public support our compatriots living in occupied Estonia in their endeavour to celebrate freely and independently, on 24 February, the 70th anniversary of the birth of statehood and Independence.

The Soviet occupation authorities revealed their repressive attitude during the celebration of the anniversary of Latvian Independence in Riga on 18 November 1987, where the city centre was surrounded by the militia and no one was allowed to express their national sentiments. For several days before that date, thousands of Latvians, both young and old, were forced to give their signatures to confirm that they support Soviet power.

We have reason to suppose that all of this will be repeated in our homeland on 24 February, just as it happened on 2 February 1988, when the Estonian people wanted to mark freely and independently the anniversary of the signing of the Tartu Peace Treaty; this was banned by the authorities as being anti-Soviet.

And yet on 2 February 1920 Soviet Russia unconditionally recognised the independence and sovereignty of the Estonian state, and, on the basis of the peace treaty, voluntarily and "for all time" renounced all sovereign rights over the land and people of Estonia.

On that same day (2 February) numerous police forces brought in from Russia were deployed against the people, and their equipment included shields, truncheons, face guards, tear gas and dogs. The people who had gathered on Toome Hill(Toomemägi) to listen to a ceremonial speech were dealt with by the "democratic force" quite simply: it pushed dozens of them, young and old and also children, down a steep hillside. In the town of Tartu, even dogs were set on young people on the occasion of the holiday.

Since there is concern in our hearts that on 24 February the occupation authorities will adopt even more Stalinist methods, which show the true side of "glasnost" and "perestroika" in the USSR, we ask for the support of the public for the Estonians in the homeland, so that without terror and violence they would be able, on this festive day, to celebrate truly and in a national spirit this moment so beautiful for all of us.

It must not happen that this day would be darkened by people's suffering, weeping, groans and arrests. Estonians, both in the homeland and in Sweden and elsewhere abroad, want to express freely and independently on this day their joy on the occasion of the founding day of their own statehood.

Stockholm, 19 February 1988.
