Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia is now 14 years old

Our Encyclopedia recently received a wonderful opportunity for a major renewal on its 14th birthday . After many years of growing our Encyclopedia had become bit slow and sometimes even decided not to answer when people knocked on the door.

A very big thank you and blessings to Dmytro Rudiy (rudiy.nl) for his great work in upgrading the server, website and all of the infrastructure and helping make TBE fast and reliable again for everyone!

We kindly ask our readers to help us cover the cost of this important upgrade and also help with the ongoing costs of keeping the Encyclopedia alive and freely available.

The Digital Chinese Buddhist Dictionary (CBE) has recently marked one year as a free and complete resource for online Buddhist studies research.

The project is largely the effort of the Estonian monk Vello Väärtnõu, who currently lives in Australia.

Drawing on his 40 years of research into all aspects of the global development of Buddhism, Väärtnõu first began publishing the CBE in December 2012.

Since then the CBE has grown and now contains more than 20,000 entries in English and 4,000 entries in Chinese, organized into 36 main categories and more than 1,400 subcategories, all meticulously linked together to make research easy.

Väärtnõu recently remarked that "the CBE has calibrated and arranged Buddhist materials as well as information in a logical and chronological order spanning thousands of years, adding new elements concerning the cultural movements that have occurred and have shaped Buddhism over time."

He also emphasized that the Chinese Buddhist Canon he is working on contains a large number of unique materials, many of which are generally not readily available to non-Chinese people, and that the CBE "will not exclude any Buddhist material simply because it is not directly related to China."

The work of integrating additional materials is ongoing, and future plans include making this information available in multiple languages, as well as "creating and promoting new forms of Buddhist education (3D films, Buddhist films…)."
