VELLO VÄÄRTNÕU: People Are Tired of Politics and Want to Eat 7. SEPTEMBER 1992

ESMASPÄEV, 7. SEPTEMBER 1992

Sest ajast maalib V. Väärtnõu pilte Stockholmis.

Saadaval on kahe haigla sisseseade USAst.

Praktiliselt mitte midagi. Pakkusin siin valitsuse kaudu 10000 tonni Brasiilia toorsuhkrut. Eesti varasem tarbimine oli teatavasti üle 80000 tonni aastas, nüüd on see ilmselt vähenenud. Igal juhul 2 kuud oleks Eesti suhkruga kindlustatud olnud.

Keegi pole riigipoes äri tegemisest huvitatud, saadakse ju kuupalka. Öeldakse, et enne erastamist pole mõtet. Eestiga ei saa äri ajada, siin on moes rohkem kohvrikaubandus.

Milliseid firmasid esindad?

Olen seotud kahe firmaga: “SJ Konsult” ja “World Sypply Trading S.A.B.”. Teise firma põhikaubandusjuht turu alal on Tom Holmgren, Rootsis tuntud ärimees. Igati soliidsete firmadega on tegemist.

Kaugel ehitusjärg on?

Talu juurde kavatsed rajada budistliku templi. Mis seal toimuma hakkab?

Mitte midagi. Tempel on tempel. Seal ei juhtu midagi, ei müüda, ei vahetata raha, ei tehta midagi. See tuleb tavaline lihtne tempel, põhiliselt suunatud vanale koolkonnale Tiibetis. Põhitähelepanu on pööratud Padmashambhavale.

Kas Eestis leidub ka Ida originaalkunsti?

Mõnel määral ikka. Tahan selle hiljem sinna tuua. Muide, Eestis on juba üks väike tempel mul ehitatud.

Isa ütleb: “Kurat, sinust on ju saanud poliitik.””

Oled Sa meie poliitikas pettunud?

Absurdne vaenlaste otsimine.

Mul on tekkinud juba alaväärsuskompleks.

Mida arvad Eesti riigi tuleviku kohta?

See on sünge kui Eestimaa sügis. August Alle tuleb meelde: “Karjalaps vaeseke kuhja all kükib, üdini märg, külm kallale tükib...”

VELLO VÄÄRTNÕU: The people are tired of politics and want to eat.

The artist VELLO VÄÄRTNÕU was expelled from Estonia in 1988 because of his political activity. One reason was spreading the idea of creating an opposition party as a counterweight to the Communist Party and drawing up a preliminary programme. Since then V. Väärtnõu has been painting pictures in Stockholm. Now he has again spent a month and a half in his homeland, organising trade between Swedish and Russian firms. He offered Estonia a large quantity of sugar, which would have enabled the consumer to get the sweet stuff from the shop at almost half the present price, but the former nomenklatura at the levers of trade was not interested in the matter.

Vello Väärtnõu, what are you mainly doing at the moment?

I have started to develop trade between Sweden and Russia. Swedes can buy and sell anything, if the price is right. I find the trading partners. I keep moving constantly between Estonia, Sweden and Russia. We sell everything: foodstuffs, detergents, disposable syringes, cars, production lines. The equipment of two hospitals from the USA is available.

Do you also deal in metals?

No, I am interested primarily in food. I like to eat well myself and I want to give to others too.

What exactly have you already brokered for Russia or Sweden?

To Russia we sold cigarettes and sugar, and one hospital is being put up for sale. The Swedes, for their part, bought for example 10 helicopters, which I had brokered.

Have you managed to sell anything in Estonia?

Practically nothing. Here I offered, through the government, 10,000 tonnes of Brazilian raw sugar. Estonia's earlier consumption was, as is known, over 80,000 tonnes a year; now it has evidently decreased. In any case, Estonia would have been supplied with sugar for 2 months. The price could have been brought to 280 dollars per tonne, so in the shops a kilo of sugar would have cost only five and a half kroons. Nothing came of the deal; I was told that it can be obtained more cheaply. For some reason the price of sugar in the shops is nevertheless the same as before. All this was covered in “Äripäev”.

What else have you offered?

I offered the state shops tinned meat in batches, and quality tinned meat at that. In many local shops, tinned goods are sold whose shelf life expired long ago. The buyer does not know that what is marked on the can is the expiry date, not the date of manufacture. From me they were willing to take tins only on commission and on credit, so that if they are bought, then it will be paid for. No one in a state shop is interested in doing business, since they get a monthly salary anyway. They say there is no point before privatisation. You cannot do business with Estonia, here suitcase trading is more in fashion.

Which firms do you represent?

I am connected with two firms: “SJ Konsult” and “World Sypply Trading S.A.B.”. The second firm's chief trade manager for the market is Tom Holmgren, a well-known businessman in Sweden. These are thoroughly reputable firms. By the way, business offers can be made to me by telephone at 51 32 36 in Tallinn.

Do you still have time for painting?

I have not abandoned painting. This winter I hardly communicated with anyone, only with my wife and child. That is the healthiest way, then no disturbing influences come from the side. I painted a great deal. I work a lot, I do not sleep. But during this winter I had no exhibitions abroad. Namely, art prices had already fallen in the autumn because of the economic crisis. But I am interested in raising the price, not lowering it. Besides, one gets by anyway, and now I am engaged in business for a change. Until now I had sold mainly through galleries, but a gallery is a shark that bites off too big a chunk along the way. Now I mostly sell my own works myself.

If it is not a secret, how much are you paid for one work?

It depends on the picture, but the kind of graphic works I make, I have sold for 10,000–12,000 kroons in Sweden.

You are building a farm in Läänemaa. How far along is the construction?

A great deal has already been done: a sauna, sewerage, and even the central heating is beginning to take shape. I also installed a radiotelephone half a year ago, but so far I cannot get a connection; something is wrong with the relay station.

When you are in Sweden, who looks after the farm?

There are always 2-3 men there, they also build, I give the money.

You intend to build a Buddhist temple next to the farm. What will happen there?

Nothing. A temple is a temple. Nothing happens there, nothing is sold, money is not exchanged, nothing is done. It will be an ordinary simple temple, oriented mainly towards the old school in Tibet. The main attention is devoted to Padmashambhava.

Is there also original Eastern art to be found in Estonia?

To some extent, yes. I want to bring it there later. By the way, I have already built one small temple in Estonia. But I cannot say where, otherwise it would be plundered bare.

You have remained a Buddhist, but are you still involved in politics?

In my opinion politics has changed since the time I was sent out to the West. Let me tell a story from the southern states of the 18th century: “A father sent his son to study at university. The son comes back, and the father puts three things on the table as a test: a Bible, a bottle of liquor and money. He thinks that if the son takes the bottle, he has become a drunkard; if the Bible, then a clergyman; if the money, then a merchant. The son comes in through the door and grabs all three things. The father says: “Damn it, you have turned into a politician.”” Estonian politics makes use of other things in addition. If one were to believe everything that the different parties promise, then Estonia will soon be a kingdom of heaven.

Are you disappointed in our politics?

One cannot be disappointed in something that does not exist. Politics is not being done in Estonia, there is only dilettantism.

At one time you put forward the idea of founding the ERSP; does that party also fail to meet your expectations?

I do not know much about their activity, I merely greet the ERSP members. But they too have no firm and real economic programme. A person aspiring to the presidency should have good political foresight, a strong economic approach and a powerful team.

What bothers you in Estonian society?

The absurd search for enemies. The searches for former KGB employees and so on. And then all that talk about Russian emigrants. In every country of average civilisation it is known that a citizen is a taxpayer. Here they want to chase one third of the taxpayers out of the country. After all, the state treasury is being filled at their expense. It is absurd to hear that a third of the people, the Russians, can Russify us. If we cannot Estonianise the Russians living here, then we are not a strong people at all.

And all those temporary residence permits and the rest of it. Around the world millions of people move every year from one country to another. Here people lived for 50 years and suddenly woke up and noticed that there are Russians next door. It is completely forgotten that next to us there is a great power, which can regulate us in the same way as the USA, for example, regulates Panama. Now, however, strict laws were passed, an outrageously expensive border was put up in between, paid for with the already meagre currency, and no thought is given to the fact that Russia, with its raw materials, is an enormous purse, which one ought to know how to make use of.

What hinders your business activity most in our everyday life?

The telephone system. I call Russia and the West 10-20 times a day. I have already developed an inferiority complex. I have to wait hours for a connection and then I still get sworn at. Now it always feels as if I were talking at the expense of the telephone operators. In order for life to start moving at all, first of all the information has to be set running at a Western level.

What do you think about the future of the Estonian state?

It is as gloomy as the Estonian autumn. I am reminded of August Alle: “The poor little shepherd boy crouches under the haystack, wet to the bone, the cold presses in on him...” It is dreadful to think how poor people have become, those who have worked all their lives. The Supreme Council, meanwhile, went and sat on Toompea and drew a salary.

The people are tired of politics and want to eat. Surely the winner would be the presidential candidate who promised to bring a kilo of meat down to two kroons within three months. The more unrealistic the offers one makes, the greater the chances of winning.
